Hiroshima: where should I stay and how far should I travel?

Base yourself near Hiroshima Station for JR trains to Miyajima or Onomichi. Hondori is another option for Peace Memorial Park visits and dinner. Onomichi is a separate city in the prefecture's east; first decide between a day trip and staying and departing there, as this changes your itinerary.

Choose the Hiroshima attractions you want first

Compare the city museum, garden and art museum, Miyajima by boat, and Onomichi's hilltop views, temple and film exhibits in the east. Give the Miyajima island round trip and Onomichi travel different days.

Itineraries by trip length

Choose city museum and garden visits, or travel to Miyajima's shrine or Onomichi's views. Compare return trips from Hiroshima accommodation with moving your base to Onomichi. For several areas, plan travel days alongside visit days.

2 days, 1 night

To reduce train travel between cities, see Peace Memorial Museum and the park on day one, then walk Shukkeien the next day. For Miyajima, see the shrine and shopping streets on day one and city collection exhibits on day two. Choose Miyajima only if your arrival leaves time for return trains, ferries and shrine visits.

3 days, 2 nights

Two options stay two nights in Hiroshima, visiting either Miyajima or Onomichi on day two. Choose Miyajima for a seaside shrine and shopping streets, or Onomichi's Senkojiyama for hilltop city and island views. The Miyajima itinerary finishes at Shukkeien; the Onomichi itinerary finishes at Peace Memorial Museum.

4 days, 3 nights

For Onomichi's hilltop views and Jodoji on different days, stay two nights in Hiroshima, then one in Onomichi. To keep one base, stay three nights in Hiroshima and give the garden, collection exhibits, Miyajima and museum a day each. After your last visit, return to Onomichi Station if staying there, or Hiroshima Station if keeping your base there.

5 days, 4 nights

For both Miyajima and Onomichi, spend three nights in Hiroshima and one in Onomichi. For more Onomichi time instead of Miyajima, split two nights in each city. Two Onomichi nights let you see hilltop views, Jodoji and the film museum on different days. Both itineraries return to Onomichi Station after the final visit.

Where should you stay?

Accommodation areas and sightseeing destinations

Peace Memorial Museum and Hondori are in central Hiroshima City; Miyajima is an island in Hatsukaichi City, and Onomichi is in the prefecture's east. Miyajima requires a boat after the train. For Onomichi, distinguish Shin-Onomichi Station from Onomichi Station.

Choose accommodation, arrival station and departure station

City and Miyajima return itineraries use the Hiroshima Station area as a base. If staying around Hondori, check accommodation–Hiroshima Station routes and times separately from the tram examples. Three- and four-night itineraries with an Onomichi stay move accommodation to the Onomichi Station area partway through, and depart from Onomichi on the last day. If storing luggage, check your booked accommodation's storage and collection hours and address. Add accommodation detours separately to sightseeing time.

JR trains, trams and meals

Which journeys can I use a JR pass for?

The Kansai–Hiroshima Area Pass costs JPY 17,000 per adult for five consecutive days; the Sanyo–San'in Area Pass costs JPY 23,000 for seven. A passport issued by a foreign government and Temporary Visitor status are required. JR Sanyo Line local trains between Hiroshima and Miyajimaguchi, and Hiroshima → Mihara → Onomichi, fall within both pass areas. Miyajimaguchi–Miyajima travel is covered on the JR West ferry, with JPY 100 visitor tax paid separately.

Hiroden trams, Hiroshima Airport buses, facility admission, accommodation and meals are excluded from both passes. The Kansai–Hiroshima pass covers the Sanyo Shinkansen only between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima; the Sanyo–San'in pass covers Shin-Osaka–Hakata. Both exclude the Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen. Reserve seats before boarding for reserved-seat travel.

Without a pass, buy ordinary tickets for each JR segment. Shinkansen travel requires a limited express ticket in addition to the base-fare ticket, changing costs from this Sanyo Line local-train itinerary. Trip-length subtotals add admission and transport excluding JR train fares. Compare ordinary tickets including JR travel into and out of the prefecture before choosing a pass. You cannot conclude that it costs less before setting JR fares and departure and arrival cities.
