Two days in Hiroshima: city sights or Miyajima?

To reduce train travel between cities, see Peace Memorial Museum and the park on day one, then walk Shukkeien the next day. For Miyajima, see the shrine and shopping streets on day one and city collection exhibits on day two. Choose Miyajima only if your arrival leaves time for return trains, ferries and shrine visits.

Peace Memorial Park and a garden

Stay one night near Hiroshima Station. Separate museum exhibits from a garden walk, without taking JR trains to the island or another city.

Day 1 · Hiroshima Station → museum and park → Hiroshima Station

Visit museum exhibits and Peace Memorial Park on your first day. If arriving late, shorten the park walk to fit your admission reservation and deadline.

  1. Hiroshima Station → Museum and park

Go to the tram platforms on the station building's second floor. Usual platforms are D for route 2 and C for route 6; check destination signs. Take route 2 towards Miyajimaguchi or Hiroden-nishi-hiroshima, or route 6 towards Eba, to Genbaku Dome-mae. Some services may use other platforms, so check on-site destination and platform signs for your departure.

  2. Museum and park entrance → Museum, park and meal

View the dome from outside the fence, then walk south through the park to the museum's East Building entrance. Allow about two hours for exhibits and 45 minutes for the park walk. These are suggested visiting times; queues take extra time. If arriving late, shorten the park walk to fit reservations and last entry. Walking through the park to the East Building and back is not included in the two-hour exhibit visit.

Miyajima and the art museum

Stay one night near Hiroshima Station. See the shrine and shopping streets on day one, then collection exhibits on day two without another boat trip.

Day 1 · Hiroshima Station → Miyajima → Hiroshima Station

Visit the island's shrine and shopping streets, then return to Hiroshima. If your arrival leaves too little time for return trains, ferries and the shrine, choose a city itinerary instead.

  1. Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajimaguchi Station

Take a JR Sanyo Line train towards Iwakuni to Miyajimaguchi Station. This differs from the Hiroden tram stop at Miyajimaguchi. Check outward and Hiroshima-bound return trains together in the JR timetable for your date.

  2. JR Miyajimaguchi Station → JR ferry passenger terminal

Walk about ten minutes from the station to the JR Miyajima Ferry passenger terminal. With a JR pass, distinguish this operator from other ferries to the same island. Waiting to board is extra to walking time.

  3. JR ferry passenger terminal → Miyajima pier

Take the JR Miyajima Ferry to the island. The ride takes about ten minutes. Standard adult fare is JPY 200 one way or JPY 400 return, with a separate JPY 100 visitor tax. Choose your return ferry first and check that you have time to finish the shrine visit.

  4. Miyajima pier → Itsukushima Shrine

Walk about 15 minutes from the pier to the shrine. Visits follow a one-way route, so check the direction back to the port from the exit. Views change with the tide; you cannot always walk beneath the torii gate.

  5. Itsukushima Shrine and shopping street entrance → Shrine, shopping streets and meal

Allow 45–60 minutes for the shrine and 90 minutes for lunch and shopping street walks. Count the JPY 100 visitor tax once when arriving on the island during this round trip.

Return to the pier after the shrine and shopping streets. Allow the roughly 15-minute walk from the shrine and boarding waits separately. Adjust shopping street time around your return ferry.

  7. Miyajima pier → Mainland terminal and JR Miyajimaguchi Station

After returning to the mainland by JR ferry, walk about ten minutes to JR Miyajimaguchi Station. Do not treat ferry arrival as your train departure time. Choose a connection allowing the walk to the station and train waiting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Miyajima on day one after a late arrival?

For Miyajima, take a JR train, walk to the passenger terminal and cross by ferry. Check return JR and ferry services for your date first. If arrival leaves too little time for the shrine, shopping streets and return to Hiroshima, move the island visit to another day or choose the city museum and garden itinerary. Immigration and travel to the station take time separate from sightseeing.
