Rail travel in Japan

What is a JR Pass?

A JR Pass is a rail ticket that lets eligible travellers use specified JR routes for a set period at a fixed price.

A pass may cost less than separate tickets if you are travelling between several cities or making long-distance journeys. Add up the tickets for your actual itinerary and compare that total with the pass price.

Many visitor passes require Temporary Visitor status, but eligibility, covered routes, trains and seat rules differ by product. Reading this Canadian-English page does not establish your eligibility.

How do I check a train or bus journey in Japan?

Select a prefecture and rail or bus, then choose stops from the list or enter your own. For rail, you can also select a station on the nationwide map. Enter your travel date and choose departure time, arrival time, first service or last service before opening the external timetable. The date and time fields use Japan local time.

This planner does not sell tickets or confirm a service is running. The rail map shows lines and stations, not guaranteed direct trains or pass coverage. Check transfers, current timetables, disruptions and seat reservations with the operator before travelling.

Comparing passes? Browse the Canadian-English JR pass guide and add up the individual fares for the trains you plan to take. A pass is useful only when its coverage, validity period and eligibility match your itinerary.
