The Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel lets you walk beneath the strait from Shimonoseki towards Moji. Its 780-metre passage links Yamaguchi and Fukuoka prefectures.

Take the elevator to the undersea passage

Take the elevator down at the Shimonoseki entrance to reach the undersea passage towards Moji. Walk beneath the sea to Fukuoka Prefecture on the other side.

How to get to Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel

Take a Kokudo Line bus from bay 1 or 2 at Shimonoseki Station and get off at Mimosusogawa. Walk about a minute to the Shimonoseki pedestrian entrance. From Karato, use bay 6. The regular adult fare is ¥300 one way. Take the elevator down to the 780-metre passage to Moji. Before leaving, check outward and return buses for your date and the location of the return stop at Mimosusogawa.

Pedestrian entrance and bicycles

Use the pedestrian entrance, separate from the road and JR rail tunnels. Bicycles and mopeds cannot be ridden through; dismount and push them. Walking to Moji and back covers 1.56 kilometres inside the tunnel alone.

Do I have to return to Shimonoseki after crossing the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel?

You can continue your trip from Moji or return through the same passage to Shimonoseki. A return walk covers 1.56 kilometres in the tunnel, plus the distance to the entrances on both sides.
