Where should you stay in Yamaguchi: east, centre or west?

Consider accommodation near Shin-Yamaguchi Station for Akiyoshido and Rurikoji’s five-storey pagoda in Yamaguchi city. Neither attraction is clustered around the station; each requires bus or JR travel. For Karato Market and the Kanmon Strait, compare a Shimonoseki Station base. To start at Kintaikyo Bridge, consider spending your first night in Iwakuni.

Choose the Yamaguchi sights you want to see first

Compare the bridge and park in eastern Iwakuni, the cave, pagoda and footbath in central Yamaguchi, and the market, aquarium and undersea tunnel in western Shimonoseki. Cave and pagoda itineraries use Shin-Yamaguchi as a base; strait itineraries use Shimonoseki.

Itineraries by trip length

For the cave and pagoda, look at the Akiyoshido and Yamaguchi city itinerary; for the market and strait, look at Shimonoseki. To include Kintaikyo Bridge, you can start in Iwakuni and move to another area. Choose your sights first, then compare overnight bases and travel days.

2 days, 1 night

Stay near Shin-Yamaguchi for Akiyoshido and Rurikoji Five-Story Pagoda, or in Shimonoseki for Karato Market and the Kanmon undersea tunnel. Schedule the market for a sushi event day. Reduce the sights if you arrive late or leave on the second morning.

3 days, 2 nights

Move your overnight base from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi to visit the bridge and park before Akiyoshido and Rurikoji Five-Story Pagoda. Alternatively, stay two nights in Shimonoseki to visit Karato Market, the Kanmon undersea tunnel and the treasure hall on separate days. The adult ¥1,690 local-train fare from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi is included in itinerary A's subtotal. Add the return Bocho cave bus fare separately.

4 days, 3 nights

Spend one night in Iwakuni and two near Shin-Yamaguchi to visit Rurikoji Five-Story Pagoda and Akiyoshido on different days. Plan the cave return trip for the day after moving hotels. Alternatively, spend three nights at one Shimonoseki hotel and return there each day after visiting the aquarium, market, Kanmon undersea tunnel and Akama Shrine.

5 days, 4 nights

For Kintaikyo Bridge, Karato Market and the Kanmon undersea tunnel, travel west with one night in Iwakuni, two near Shin-Yamaguchi and one in Shimonoseki. For Kaikyokan, Akama Shrine's treasure hall, Akiyoshido and the footbath, spend two nights in Shimonoseki followed by two near Shin-Yamaguchi. The itinerary starting in Shimonoseki has no market sushi event, so its dates do not need to match the event days. A trip starting in Iwakuni finishes back at Shimonoseki Station on the last day; one starting in Shimonoseki finishes at Shin-Yamaguchi Station. Choose the finishing station that suits your next city as well.

Accommodation areas and sightseeing regions

Shin-Yamaguchi Station is a JR base in Yamaguchi city; Akiyoshido is in Mine. Iwakuni is in the prefecture’s east and Shimonoseki in the west. Crossing the entire Kanmon pedestrian tunnel takes you out of Yamaguchi Prefecture to Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture.

Choose accommodation, arrival and departure stations

Stay near Shin-Yamaguchi Station for the cave, pagoda and Yuda Onsen, or near Shimonoseki Station for the market, aquarium and Kanmon pedestrian tunnel. Routes starting at Kintaikyo spend the first night in Iwakuni before moving to Shin-Yamaguchi. Checks when choosing dates and transport

Cave admission varies by visit date

Adult Akiyoshido admission is normally ¥1,600, or ¥1,350 from December to February. The specified 2026 peak periods—April 27–May 7 and July 1–August 31—cost ¥1,900. Subtotal ranges for the 2-day A, 3-day A, 4-day A and 5-day A/B cave itineraries reflect this seasonal admission difference. They are not total trip-budget ranges including all transport. Check that year's prices if visiting in another year.

Open the official Akiyoshido guide

Add transport costs excluded from the subtotal

Adult local JR fares are ¥240 one way or ¥480 return for Shin-Yamaguchi–Yamaguchi, ¥240 one way or ¥480 return for Shin-Yamaguchi–Yuda Onsen, ¥1,690 one way from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi, and ¥1,170 one way in either direction between Shin-Yamaguchi and Shimonoseki. Cost tables count the rides used by each itinerary. They assume a separate ticket for each section; fares and stopover conditions for a single ticket covering several sections, and Shinkansen charges, are different.

The return Bocho bus between Shin-Yamaguchi Station and Akiyoshido is still excluded. If the official online search will not open, give the station information desk or Yamaguchi office your departure and arrival stops and travel date to confirm the return fare. Accommodation, meals, airport travel and luggage storage are separate from the subtotal.

The adult 7-day Sanyo-San'in Area Pass costs ¥23,000; the adult 7-day JR-WEST All Area Pass costs ¥26,000. Both official guides list the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata and local and rapid JR trains within their coverage. The All Area Pass covers a wider area, including the Hokuriku Shinkansen between Tsuruga and Joetsumyoko. A trip confined to Yamaguchi does not by itself justify the more expensive pass.

The itinerary cost tables use adult local-train tickets for each section. If you take the Shinkansen or add other regions, compare your entire JR route on your travel dates—including regular tickets and limited-express charges—with the pass price. We have not calculated pass savings from the current subtotals. Sanden Kotsu, Bocho and Iwakuni buses, plus cave, bridge and aquarium admission, are separate costs from the JR pass on these itineraries.

Adding Hagi requires a separate plan; it is outside the eight current itineraries and cost tables. Choose outward and return services from Shin-Yamaguchi or Shimonoseki and the area you will walk in Hagi. The city-to-city routes on this page link Iwakuni in the east, Shin-Yamaguchi and Mine in the centre, and Shimonoseki in the west.

Stay near Shin-Yamaguchi for the cave and pagoda, or in Shimonoseki for the market and undersea tunnel. To visit Akiyoshido on a day when you move from Iwakuni to Shin-Yamaguchi, you need outward and return cave buses that connect after your JR arrival, with time for about 90 minutes in the cave and walks to and from the stop. With at least three nights, you can choose an itinerary that separates the hotel move from the cave visit. If a market meal is your priority, choose dates around the Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Japanese public holiday event.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cost table include all transport and accommodation?

No. It is a subtotal of attraction admission, the specified Shimonoseki Kokudo Line buses, the ¥600 return fare on Kintaikyo routes 11 and 21, and adult local JR tickets for the sections used. The return Bocho bus fare to the cave is still excluded; confirm it with an official information desk and add it to your budget. If you choose the Shinkansen, look up station access, base tickets and limited-express charges separately.
