Nagaoka Fireworks Festival

長岡まつり大花火大会

Large fireworks displays spread along the Shinano River in Nagaoka. The festival carries themes of remembrance and rebuilding, so its programme is more than a general summer fireworks show.

Usual annual timing

Dates and times use JST. Usual timing is not a confirmed next-edition schedule. Read the organiser’s programme for start times, tickets, postponements and cancellations.

Where to watch

Nagaoka · 長岡

Both banks of the Shinano River near Ote Bridge
信濃川・大手大橋周辺

Viewing areas line both banks of the Shinano River near Ote Bridge. Go to the bank and block on your ticket, not to a fireworks launch point.

The directions below use one representative location, not every venue entrance or the complete procession route. Use the official venue map for your ticket or programme.

Getting there by train or bus

Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagaoka. The riverside is roughly twenty minutes away on foot, but your seating block may require a longer walk.

Planning your visit

Plan around the riverbank and entrance on your ticket. Spending the evening on that side avoids an unnecessary crossing before the display.

This is an editorial travel suggestion, not a claim of a personal visit or a guarantee of the programme. When travelling from Canada, use your Japan arrival date to select the festival day.

History and traditions

The festival developed from remembrance of wartime victims and hopes for rebuilding. Earthquake recovery also inspired later displays.
