Displays line Chuo-dori and Ichibancho shopping streets west of Sendai Station. There is no official procession start or finish; walking from the station toward Ichibancho is a suggested viewing route.

Getting there by train or bus

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Sendai. Leave the station’s west exit and walk towards Chuo-dori; the decorated shopping streets continue towards Ichibancho.

Planning your visit

Follow the arcades from the station and pause for the smaller paper details as well as the large streamers. Nearby subway stations can help with your return from Ichibancho.

History and traditions

Tanabata is associated with the Weaver and Cowherd legend. Sendai's Edo-period decorating tradition grew into today's large arcade displays.
