Akita: which base should you choose?
Base yourself near Akita Station for park and harbour visits, or stay in Kakunodate for houses and Lake Tazawa on separate days. If staying in both, plan the hotel-transfer Shinkansen. These routes start at local stations; arrange airport travel and flights separately.
Choose the sights you want to see first
Choose Senshu Park for an arrival-day walk or Selion for harbour and sea views. Choose Kakunodate for house interiors and local crafts or the Lake Tazawa circular bus for lake scenery and the Tatsuko Statue. Ishiguro’s final general visiting day is 30 November 2026. For later trips, check Aoyagi and Kawarada hours.
Routes by trip length
Eight routes start at local stations. Decide first between Akita and Kakunodate accommodation and whether to move hotels. Shorten sightseeing after late first-day arrivals or before early final-day departures; airport travel is separate.
2 days, 1 night
Visit park and harbour on separate days from Akita Station, or two houses on separate days in Kakunodate. Both two-day routes keep one base without lake travel.
3 days, 2 nights
For park and houses, stay one night each in Akita and Kakunodate. For houses and lake, spend two Kakunodate nights with one Lake Tazawa day.
4 days, 3 nights
Add a city walk with one Akita night followed by two Kakunodate nights. Three Kakunodate nights allow house and lake visits, plus final-day crafts, but omit the craft museum for a morning departure.
5 days, 4 nights
For harbour views, stay two nights each in Akita and Kakunodate, separating harbour and hotel-transfer days. Four Kakunodate nights give houses, crafts and lake separate days, with no new final-day visits.
Where to stay
Akita Station · 秋田駅
Use Akita Station as a base for Senshu Park, city meals and buses to Selion. If heading to the airport after Selion, check the return bus to Akita Station and airport bus separately.
Kakunodate Station · 角館駅
Arrive by train and walk to the samurai-house district. Staying near the station makes your next departure easier; staying near the district makes it easier to return after a walk. Station pickups are not available at every hotel.
Tazawako Station · 田沢湖駅
Transfer here for lakeside buses. Accommodation near the station, lake and Nyuto Onsen is in different areas. Decide whether to eat dinner at your accommodation and which bus gets you there by check-in before booking.
Choosing transport and accommodation
Lake Tazawa circular bus: checks before leaving
Choose a circular bus with walking stops together with your JR return services. Timetable services marked ● do not run Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and designated holiday periods; not all buses connect with Shinkansen trains. Large luggage, including large suitcases, is restricted. Take short walks at Katajiri and Gozanoishi Shrine and reboard the same bus. Check extra fares before changing to a later service. Plan lunch after station return, rather than during walking stops.

Looking for station-area accommodation?
Compare Hotel Metropolitan Akita for a station-connected hotel, or Hotel B4T beside Kakunodate Station. B4T uses self check-in and provides no breakfast. Check room rates and conditions in each hotel’s official guidance.
Akita–Kakunodate e-ticket reference versus actual purchase price
JR’s regular-season Shinkansen e-ticket table lists adult reserved ordinary-class Akita–Kakunodate at ¥2,870 one way or ¥5,740 return. Adding ¥1,000 for two houses gives a ¥6,740 reference total. Distinguish this from paper-ticket prices and dated sale prices. Ekinet registration/booking and a linked transport IC card for each passenger are required. Prices vary by season/product. Accommodation, meals, station access and travel before/after the trip are excluded.

Hotel moves, lake visits and JR pass coverage
The JR East Pass covers Akita Shinkansen sections Akita–Kakunodate and Kakunodate–Tazawako. Reserve seats first and ensure outward/return dates fall within consecutive validity. Ugo Kotsu lake buses and Akita Chuo Kotsu Selion buses are excluded. Ordinary tickets are another option; compare all other JR travel to judge pass value. An original non-Japanese passport is required. The JR East Pass is not limited to Temporary Visitor status; do not apply another pass’s eligibility rules.

Which days should you visit the park, harbour, houses and lake?
Use buses from Akita Station for the harbour deck and Shinkansen trains for Kakunodate/Tazawako. Separate park, harbour, houses and lake days around your base and return transport.
Arrival day: Akita Station and Senshu Park
Walk from the station to Senshu Park on arrival. View the moat in daylight, then return towards the station for dinner. Stay by the moat to reduce slopes; choose the uphill Ninomaru walk according to how much walking you want.
Harbour views and return to Akita city
Choose both Selion-bound and return buses for harbour day. Restaurants/shops have different hours from the deck; choose harbour or station meals around your return bus. Compare two Akita nights if an immediate departure-train connection feels tight.
Kakunodate house interiors and craft exhibits
Visit Aoyagi’s garden and exhibits and Kawarada’s house and garden. Add Kabazaiku Denshokan for mountain-cherry bark crafts. The three-night route visits it on departure day; the four-night stay gives it a separate day. Compare the latter for an early departure.

A Lake Tazawa day trip from Kakunodate
Use one day of your Kakunodate stay for Lake Tazawa. Take a circular bus with Katajiri and Gozanoishi walking stops and return on the same bus. Overnight trips to the lakeside or Nyuto Onsen require separate transport and accommodation conditions and are excluded from this day trip.

Which route should you take from the station to each sight?
Directions below start at stations. For hotel departures, change the map starting point to your booked address. Prioritize dated official JR/bus timetables and facility hours over map arrival estimates.
Akita Station → Senshu Park
Allow roughly five minutes from Akita Station to the pocket park or 15 to Ninomaru. Choose the moat or uphill destination before navigating. These estimates end at those points; park walking, photos and rests add time.
Akita Station west exit → Selion
Take the Selion Line from west-terminal stop 4 to Selion. Enter Port Tower’s front entrance for the deck, then return by Akita Station bus. Riding takes roughly 25 minutes; entrance walking/waiting add time. Distinguish weekday and Saturday/Sunday/public-holiday timetables for both directions.

Kakunodate Station → samurai-house district
Follow the station road to the T-junction where the post office is visible, then turn right into the district. Aoyagi is at 角館町表町下丁3 and Kawarada at 角館町東勝楽丁9. The tourism association estimates roughly 15 minutes to Aoyagi from the station, while city hall estimates roughly 20. Allow time for navigation.

Akita Station → Kakunodate Station
Take a Morioka-bound Akita Shinkansen to Kakunodate. Pass Omagari without transferring on this section. Choose a train stopping at Kakunodate and reserve a seat. Leave time before dated house last entry if viewing after arrival.
Kakunodate Station → Tazawako Station → lake circuit
Take the Shinkansen to Tazawako, then transfer outside to the circular bus. See the statue and lake at Katajiri and take a short shrine walk at Gozanoishi before returning on the same bus. The walking stops last 20 minutes at Katajiri and 10 minutes at Gozanoishi. Choose your Kakunodate train around bus return time.

Kiritanpo hot pot or Inaniwa udon?
Kiritanpo is coarsely mashed rice moulded onto skewers and grilled. In hot pot, it joins mushrooms and other ingredients in soy-based broth made with Hinai local chicken. Hand-stretched Inaniwa udon is known for its springy, smooth texture.
For a hot-pot dinner, check whether your accommodation already includes it. Consider udon for lunch on nights with accommodation meals. Eat near Akita Station on park day or in Kakunodate on house day for convenient hotel return. Menus, prices and hours vary; check your chosen restaurant.

Transport, food and cameras
Use the JR pass guide for intercity trains and Senshu Park’s moat camera before city walks.
JR East Pass guide
Compare the JR East Pass for multi-city Shinkansen travel. Do not include Ugo Kotsu lake/hot-spring buses or Selion Line under the same pass.
Senshu Park moat camera source
Before a city walk, use the original moat camera for views around the moat and water. It shows the moat edge, not all uphill paths or the Osumiyagura interior. Original feed checked 8 October 2026.
If you are unsure where to board
Ask the driver where to board the Akita Station return bus when getting off at Selion. Ask the facility if unsure about Port Tower’s entrance (018-857-3381).
Show your timetable at Folake tourist information inside Tazawako Station to ask about circular-bus boarding. Open 08:30–17:15; telephone 0187-43-2111. If closed, contact Ugo Kotsu’s Tazawako office (0187-43-1511).

Paying cash on Lake Tazawa buses
Prepare coins or ¥1,000 notes. Take a numbered ticket at boarding and submit it with the fare when getting off. Ask the driver before boarding how tickets work during circular-bus walking stops. With an ordinary ticket, getting off partway generally ends that journey; do not use it as an unlimited day pass for later buses.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I stay for Senshu Park and the samurai houses?
Compare Akita Station accommodation for Senshu Park, city meals or Selion buses. For Kakunodate’s houses, consider station-area or district-area stays. If staying in both regions, allocate a separate Shinkansen transfer day.

Can I day-trip to Lake Tazawa from Kakunodate?
A Kakunodate stay can include one Lake Tazawa day. Take the Akita Shinkansen to Tazawako, use a circular bus with walking stops, return to the station on the same bus, then take the Shinkansen back. Not every bus connects with a train; choose dated outward/return services together. Lakeside or Nyuto Onsen overnights use different bases and return transport.
