Spend your first day in Kawagoe for temples and historic streets into the evening. Ordinary JR paper tickets cost JPY 810 from Shinjuku and JPY 350 to Omiya the next day. JR Kawagoe, Hon-Kawagoe and Kawagoeshi are different stations, so choose your hotel location for the railway you will use.

Choose two Omiya nights to give the Railway Museum and bonsai/cartoon museums a day each. Moving here after Kawagoe avoids a return trip over the same section. The JR paper fare from Omiya to Shinjuku is JPY 530 one way. For Chichibu, take JR to Kumagaya and change to Chichibu Railway.

Chichibu · 秩父

Compare one Chichibu night for the shrine and festival exhibitions with two nights for Nagatoro's riverside and Hodosan too. Omiya–Kumagaya JR JPY 620 and Kumagaya–Chichibu Railway JPY 950 are separate. This route uses Chichibu Railway's Chichibu Station, which differs from Seibu-Chichibu Station.

Kawagoe: Kitain and historic streets

Visit Kitain's paid areas first, then continue to Kurazukuri streets and Toki no Kane. For small confectionery shops, consider a Kashiya Yokocho walk too. To add the castle and City Museum, compare the two-night route giving them another day with matching opening dates.

Omiya: railway, bonsai and cartoon exhibitions

Reach the Railway Museum by New Shuttle from Omiya; this plan walks to the bonsai and cartoon museums via the park and bonsai village. The recommended walk to the bonsai museum takes about 45 minutes, with visits and rests extra. Choose three-night route A with two Omiya nights for both types of exhibitions.

Chichibu: shrine and festival exhibitions

Walk about three minutes from Chichibu Railway's Chichibu Station to the shrine. See its buildings and carvings, then floats and videos recreating the festival at the nearby Festival Hall. This differs from attending the festival itself. Compare two Chichibu nights if you also want riverside scenery the following day.

Nagatoro: riverside and Hodosan

Iwadatami is about five minutes on foot from Nagatoro Station; the Hodosan Ropeway lower station takes about 20 minutes. Rain and high water may restrict riverside rock access; ropeway travel depends on weather and suspensions. The final day returns via Kumagaya to Shinjuku without going back to Chichibu.

Chichibu: battered potatoes with miso sauce

Miso potato (みそポテト) is boiled potato coated in batter, fried and served with a sweet-salty miso sauce. This local Chichibu food developed as a light meal during farm work and is also eaten as a snack or side dish. Menus and portions vary by shop, so decide whether to order it with a meal or as a snack.

Should I buy a new JR TOKYO Wide Pass just for this itinerary?

JR TOKYO Wide Pass

The adult pass costs JPY 16,000 for three consecutive days, more than the route transport/admission totals above. If you already have one or combine other JR travel, check valid dates and eligibility. The New Shuttle Omiya–Tetsudo-Hakubutsukan section is officially covered; Chichibu Railway, ropeways and facility admission are separate. You must also meet the foreign-national condition, hold a valid passport issued outside Japan and present the original passport.
