Shiga travel: which side of Lake Biwa should you stay on?
Stay near Ishiyama Station to focus on Ishiyamadera Temple, or Kusatsu Station for the bus to Lake Biwa Museum. For Hikone Castle's keep and garden, stay near Hikone Station and walk there. Hachiman-bori Canal requires a bus from Omihachiman Station.
What would you like to see?
Choose Hikone Castle for its keep and garden, or Ishiyamadera for a walk through the temple grounds and a worship visit. At Hachiman-bori, follow the canal through the old streets. For indoor exhibits on a rainy day, take the bus from Kusatsu Station to Lake Biwa Museum.
Itineraries by trip length
Compare the one-night Hikone itinerary for the castle keep, garden and castle museum with the one-night Kusatsu itinerary for Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. A two-night itinerary adds Hachiman-bori's canal and old streets while staying in Hikone. Check each itinerary's visit order and route back to your hotel.
2 days, 1 night
Stay in Hikone and visit the castle and garden one day and the castle museum the next, or stay in Kusatsu and spend one day each at Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. Reduce your visits if you arrive late or have an early departure train.
3 days, 2 nights
Stay in Hikone for the castle and Hachiman-bori, or in Kusatsu for Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. On your last day, take a short walk near your hotel if time allows before your departure train.
4 days, 3 nights
From Kusatsu, visit Ishiyamadera, Lake Biwa Museum and Hikone Castle on separate days. From Hikone, spread the castle, castle museum and Hachiman-bori across three days.
5 days, 4 nights
Visit the four attractions on separate days from the same Kusatsu hotel, or stay two nights in Hikone followed by two in Kusatsu. On the day you move to Kusatsu, you need to reach the museum before last entry with enough time to visit.
Accommodation bases
Ishiyama Station
Otsu · 大津 (Shiga · 滋賀県)
Consider Ishiyama Station for a focus on Ishiyamadera worship. Temple buses leave bay 1. To visit Lake Biwa Museum too, take JR to Kusatsu and change to the museum bus. The temple and museum buses leave from different stations.

Kusatsu Station
Kusatsu · 草津
Choose Kusatsu Station for the museum first, or separate days for southern temple worship and eastern castle/canal visits. Museum buses leave west exit bay 2. The temple, Hikone Castle and Hachiman-bori require JR to other stations. Even near-station hotels need an address-specific check of walking time to the bus bay.

Omihachiman Station
Omihachiman · 近江八幡
For more time at Hachiman-bori, distinguish station-area hotels from canal-area accommodation. Take a bus from north-side bay 6 or 7 to the canal. For Hikone Castle too, check JR between Omihachiman and Hikone together with your return bus.

Hikone Station
Hikone · 彦根
Consider Hikone Station for time at the castle, Genkyuen Garden and castle museum. Official directions give about 15 minutes walking from station to castle and museum. Ticket queues and the slope/stone-step ascent to the keep are extra. Castle and museum open at different times; a Hachiman-bori day trip adds return JR and bus travel.

Castle and museum on the same day?
Adult castle/Genkyuen admission is JPY 1,000; individual museum admission is JPY 700. For both on the same day, check JPY 1,500 combined-ticket sales and exhibition operations. Separate-day routes calculate JPY 1,000 + JPY 700; do not try to fit keep, garden and museum into a tight departure schedule.
Canal walks and boat rides are separate
Take a Hachiman-bori service from Omihachiman Station north-side bay 6 or 7; adult return buses cost JPY 520. Walk directly from the stop to the canal. The basic route walks the canal and historic streets; boats are separate. Check the operator's landing, times and fares first if choosing one.

Give another city a day, then return to the same hotel
From Kusatsu to Hikone Castle, use a Maibara-bound JR train; from Hikone to Hachiman-bori, use a Kyoto-bound train to Omihachiman and a canal bus. Returns use a Kyoto-bound train stopping at Kusatsu or a train towards Maibara/Nagahama stopping at Hikone respectively. Ordinary JR tickets are an option. Before comparing the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass, check actual-date section coverage and ordinary fares. Temple, canal and museum buses and admission are calculated separately from JR in route costs. The pass runs for one to four consecutive days; one does not cover an entire four-night, five-day trip.

Where can I walk after visiting an attraction?
Choose the streets near Hikone Castle, the old streets along Hachiman-bori or a park close to Kusatsu Station. These are in different cities, so pair a walk with that day's attraction instead of trying to link all three in one day.
Yume Kyobashi Castle Road below Hikone Castle
Yume Kyobashi Castle Road (夢京橋キャッスルロード) is a shopping street near Kyobashi Bridge over the castle moat. The official guide lists a walk of about 20 minutes from Hikone Station. Sweet shops and restaurants line the street, making it an option for a meal after the castle or a short walk on departure day. Each shop sets its own hours and days off.
Hachiman-bori and Shinmachi Street
Shinmachi Street · 新町通り
Former Omi merchants' homes and shops remain along Shinmachi Street. To explore these old streets alongside Hachiman-bori, use the official walking map to choose your route. Walking along the canal and taking a boat are separate activities. If you add a sightseeing boat or museum, check its hours and fees separately.

Deai Hiroba near Kusatsu Station
Deai Hiroba (de愛ひろば) is in section 5 of the park on the former Kusatsu River bed, about a six-minute walk from Kusatsu Station. It can be a short walk before your train on the last day of a Kusatsu stay. Distinguish the whole park's access hours from the office's hours, and check separate conditions for paid facilities or events.
Where do I go after getting off JR?
Take JR between cities, then walk or use a local bus from the station to the attraction. A facility's representative map pin is a navigation reference; it does not identify the ticket office or entrance.
From Hikone Station to the castle and museum
Hikone Castle and its museum are about a 15-minute walk from Hikone Station. Use the official access guide for the route. That estimate excludes ticket queues and time on the stairs inside the keep. Check the castle and museum opening times separately.
Stations for buses to Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum
For Ishiyamadera, take a bus serving Sanmon-mae from bay 1 at JR Ishiyama Station; the ride takes about 10 minutes. Lake Biwa Museum buses leave from bay 2 at Kusatsu Station's west exit. Distinguish the stations and bus bays first, then use each attraction's access guide to check outward and return services for your visit date.
From Omihachiman Station to Hachiman-bori
Take a bus serving Hachiman-bori from bay 6 or 7 at Omihachiman Station's north exit. Return on an Omihachiman Station-bound bus. For a Hikone hotel, continue on a JR service towards Maibara or Nagahama that stops at Hikone. Allow time to transfer between the bus and train.

Eat in the city you are visiting today
Look at the shopping street below the castle on your Hikone day, or Omihachiman restaurants on your canal day. Check the city when browsing Shiga's restaurant guide. Using the same restaurant on an Otsu temple day and a Hikone Castle day adds travel between cities.

What can I eat in Shiga?
For a beef meal, look for Omi beef. For local dishes, consider red konjac or funazushi. Choose the food and city first, then check individual restaurants' menus, prices and hours.
Omi beef
Omi beef (近江牛) appears in dishes such as rice bowls and beef stew. For a meal in Hikone after the castle, compare menus in the Yume Kyobashi Castle Road shop directory. Meals are outside the attraction and bus costs shown in the itineraries.

Red konjac
Red konjac (赤こんにゃく) is a well-known local food in Omihachiman. Its red colour comes from iron oxide, rather than chili pepper. It may be served with vinegar-miso dressing or wasabi soy sauce. Check how a restaurant prepares it instead of assuming the colour means it is spicy.
Funazushi
Funazushi (ふなずし) is a preserved food made by fermenting Lake Biwa crucian carp with rice. It differs from ordinary sushi with fish placed over rice. If you want to try fermented food, look for it on the menu; for a first taste, ask about portion sizes and how to eat it. Check the menu before visiting, as not every restaurant serves it.
How much are admission and buses?
The following attraction and bus fares are for one adult paying the ordinary rate. Compare costs for several attractions in the itineraries by trip length. JR fares, passes, accommodation, meals and flights are outside these prices and the itinerary subtotals.
Hikone Castle and Genkyuen Garden
Adult admission is ¥1,000. A separate Hikone Castle Museum ticket is ¥700. To visit all three on the same day, check whether the ¥1,500 combined ticket is on sale and the museum exhibits are open.
Ordinary Ishiyamadera admission
Adult admission is ¥600. The Main Hall inner sanctuary and Hozoden Treasure Hall cost extra.
Lake Biwa Museum permanent exhibitions
Adult admission is ¥840. Special exhibitions and the bus from the station cost extra.
Ishiyama Station–Sanmon-mae bus
The adult fare is ¥250 each way or ¥500 return. Temple admission and JR fares are separate.
Kusatsu Station–Lake Biwa Museum bus
The adult fare is ¥480 each way or ¥960 return. Museum admission and JR fares are separate.
Omihachiman Station–Hachiman-bori bus
The adult fare is ¥260 each way or ¥520 return. Sightseeing boats, paid facilities and JR fares are separate.
Choose your WEST QR travel dates and journeys first
The Kansai Area Pass is valid for one to four consecutive days on ordinary-car unreserved seats on JR local, rapid and Special Rapid services within its coverage area. It does not cover Shinkansen. Buses to the temple, canal and museums, and attraction admission, cost extra. Conditions include a foreign-government-issued passport, Temporary Visitor status and an internet-connected smartphone. One pass cannot cover all five days, so compare the days you would use it with ordinary tickets for the remaining days. Frequently asked questions
Do buses to Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum leave from the same station?
Buses to Ishiyamadera leave from bay 1 at JR Ishiyama Station. Buses to Lake Biwa Museum leave from bay 2 at Kusatsu Station's west exit. To visit both, take JR between Ishiyama and Kusatsu stations.
Can I visit Hikone Castle and Ishiyamadera on the same day?
Getting from Hikone Castle to Ishiyamadera involves a JR journey followed by a bus to the temple. Visiting on separate days leaves more time at each. On a two-day trip, you can spend one day each at Hikone Castle and its museum, or at Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. Shorten the first day's visit if you arrive late, and change the order if a museum is closed. To visit both on one day, first check the return JR and bus schedules and both attractions' last-entry times.

Does this itinerary go all the way around Lake Biwa?
All eight itineraries let you choose among Ishiyamadera, Lake Biwa Museum, Hikone Castle and Hachiman-bori on the lake's southern and eastern sides. They do not make a circuit through the north and west. Choose your attractions and hotel base first, then compare trip lengths. The waterfowl and wetland centre camera in the north is a separate scenery reference and is outside the main itineraries.
