Tokushima travel: how will you split the city, Naruto and Iya?

Stay near Tokushima Station for Awa Odori performances and city views from Mount Bizan. For whirlpools, spend a day in Naruto to the east; for the vine bridge and valley, compare a stay in Iya to the west. Naruto is a return bus trip. The routes below connecting Wakimachi and Iya use a rental car.

Would you rather see a performance, the strait or the valley?

Choose Awa Odori Kaikan to watch and learn dance, or Bizan for views down over the city and river. Naruto offers strait whirlpools; Iya and Oboke to the west offer the vine bridge and gorge scenery from a boat. For a slower walk among historic homes, compare Wakimachi. Buses serve the city and Naruto, but the Wakimachi and Iya itineraries below require a rental car.

Itineraries by trip length

First decide whether to stay near Tokushima Station throughout, spend one night in Naruto or move to Iya. Naruto return trips use buses; Wakimachi and Iya driving routes assume you have secured a rental car. For a western stay, settle dinner and car return conditions.

2 days, 1 night

Option A visits a performance and Bizan on separate days from a station-area base. B stays in Naruto on day one and visits the strait on day two. Choose city culture and views or the strait as this trip’s focus.

3 days, 2 nights

Both options stay two nights in Tokushima. A visits Naruto by return bus; B drives to Wakimachi’s historic streets. Bizan on B’s final day is optional, so compare the costs with a performance-only visit.

4 days, 3 nights

A keeps the same city hotel and visits Naruto and Wakimachi on separate days. B spends one night in Tokushima and two in Iya, drives to the cruise and vine bridge in the west, and returns the car in Tokushima on the final day.

5 days, 4 nights

A spends three eastern nights then one in Iya; B visits the west first and returns east. A combines final-day bridge sightseeing and car return. B includes Oboke’s free gorge views, excludes the cruise and chooses either a performance or Bizan on the final day.

Before choosing buses, a car and your budget

Check Naruto’s tides and return bus together

Choose both buses around your date’s whirlpool-viewing tidal times and Uzunomichi’s admission cutoff. Weekday and holiday schedules differ. If leaving for another city that day, allow time from the station to your hotel and departure boarding point.

Adult return bus costs are JPY 780 from Naruto Station or JPY 1,740 from Tokushima Station. Hotel–station journeys and airport or onward travel cost extra.

Drive to Wakimachi and Iya; compare buses for Kazurabashi alone

Three-day B and four-day A’s Wakimachi visits, and four-day B and five-day A/B’s western stays, use rental cars. Check driving times using your hotel address and set pickup and return times. Rental, insurance, fuel, expressway tolls and parking are outside the facility subtotal; Yumebutai’s JPY 500 parking is per vehicle.

For Kazurabashi alone without a car, continue from Oboke Station by bus or taxi. Plan a separate itinerary around return buses, JR connections and hotel transfers. Four-day B and five-day A return the car in Tokushima on the final day; for an early departure, move the bridge earlier or omit it.

Do not deduct Naruto or Iya bus costs with a rail pass

JR Shikoku’s October 2026 revision notice describes ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass rail and tram coverage and excludes bus services. Do not assume Naruto Park or Oboke–Kazurabashi buses are included. These subtotals do not discount rental cars, performances, ropeway, bridge or cruise fees either.

The trip-length budgets include no pass purchases or discounts. If you already hold a pass, compare its purchase date, validity dates and actual journeys against official guidance.

From Tokushima Station to Naruto Strait

The facility gives about 80 minutes for the Naruto Park-bound bus from Tokushima Station. Get off at the park and walk about five minutes to Uzunomichi. Visit around the local tide table, then check your Tokushima Station-bound boarding point and service for the return.

From Tokushima to Wakimachi and Iya

Choosing Tokushima ramen in the city

Tokushima ramen has three broth styles: brown, with sweet-savoury pork-bone and soy-sauce broth; yellow, using chicken bones, vegetables and other ingredients; and a relatively light white style. Pork and raw-egg toppings also vary by shop. Choose your preferred style in the food guide, then check the restaurant’s opening days and last orders for a pre-show meal.

Dinner in Iya

In Iya, eating dinner at your hotel after the bridge or valley can reduce travel. Check dinner inclusion and arrival deadlines when booking. Meals are outside the admission and sightseeing-transport subtotal.

Check the destination and camera subject first

The Tokushima camera list above includes Iya Kazurabashi and the view outside Wakimachi’s Yoshida Residence. Iya Kazurabashi differs from Oku-Iya’s double vine bridges, and Koboke viewpoint footage differs from the Oboke cruise. Before departure, on-the-day checks and FAQ

Do I need both Naruto and Iya in a two-day trip?

No. Naruto is the eastern strait and Iya the western valley. For a short trip, focus on city performances and Bizan, or Naruto. Plan Iya as a separate stay in the west to reduce travel demands.
