How to plan a visit to Kyoto
Gion and Higashiyama are on Kyoto’s east side; Arashiyama is to the west. With only one day, focus on one side so you can spend more time walking and less time crossing the city.
When and where to go in Kyoto
Where should I go for blossoms?
Pair Maruyama Park with a walk through Higashiyama. Arashiyama is across the city to the west; give it another day if you want time to enjoy both areas.
Where should I go for autumn colour?
Arashiyama pairs a riverside walk with wooded hills. Its Togetsukyo camera shows only the bridge area, so use Kyoto’s foliage reports for peak colour.
Where to go in Kyoto
Gion and Higashiyama
Take time for Gion’s streets and Higashiyama’s temple approaches. Observe signs restricting access or photography in private lanes.
Food to look for Look for obanzai, Kyoto-style small dishes, around Gion, or return to Kyoto Station for dinner.

Arashiyama and Togetsukyo Bridge
Make a western Kyoto day of Togetsukyo Bridge, the river and the bamboo grove. Gion is across town, not the next stop on foot.
Food to look for Yudofu, warm tofu, is one option to look for here. Check restaurant hours so lunch does not slip past you.

Food to look for Try a few small snacks, then compare nearby restaurants for a full meal.

Some private lanes in Gion restrict access or photography. Follow local signs; at Nishiki Market, eat where the shop asks you to rather than while walking.
What and where to eat
Eat around Gion or return to Kyoto Station for dinner. Yudofu is warm tofu; obanzai is a meal built around several Kyoto-style small dishes.

Plan meals in Gion and around Nishiki Market separately from an Arashiyama day. Eat near the area you’re exploring, and consider Kyoto Station when you’re about to leave the city.

Decide whether your rail plans stop at the airport or extend to an onsen farther away. Gion and Arashiyama sightseeing alone is not a reason to buy a wide pass.
Kyoto Station ↔ Kansai Airport: Haruka
Haruka directly links Kyoto Station and Kansai Airport. The Kansai WIDE Area Pass covers it, but compare individual Haruka fares if the airport is your only longer trip.
