Which Iwate attractions would you like to see?

In Morioka, walk beside the castle park’s stone walls and explore restored bank interiors at the Red Brick Building. Hiraizumi offers Motsuji’s Oizumi-ga-ike garden and Chusonji’s Golden Hall and Sankozo. For sea views, continue to Miyako’s Jodogahama; for Kenji’s work, visit the Hanamaki museum. Chusonji and the Kenji museum still require uphill walking after the bus, so allow ample time for travel and sightseeing.

Sightseeing and walks

Iwate Bank Red Brick Building

岩手銀行赤レンガ館

  • AdmissionFor ages 16 and older, individual paid-area admission costs ¥300; elementary and junior high school students pay ¥100, and preschool children enter free.
  • HoursThe building opens 10:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. It closes on Tuesdays and 29 December–3 January.
  • DirectionsTake Dendenmushi’s clockwise loop outside Morioka Station, get off at Morioka Bus Center and walk about one minute. Return on the anticlockwise loop from the bus centre to the station. Chusonji

Chūson-ji Temple中尊寺

Chusonji offers the Golden Hall and Sankozo exhibitions. After the bus, climb the Tsukimizaka approach and return down the same route after visiting. Allow enough time for the Golden Hall and descent. A standard adult ticket including the Golden Hall and Sankozo costs ¥1,000.

  • AdmissionStandard admission costs ¥1,000 for adults, ¥700 for high school students, ¥500 for junior high school students, and ¥300 for elementary school students. It covers the Golden Hall, Sankozo, sutra repository and former protective hall. This differs from the ¥1,600 combined ticket for the special opening of normally hidden Buddhist images.
  • HoursFrom 1 March to 3 November, the facilities open 08:30–17:00. From 4 November to the end of February, they open 08:30–16:30. They are listed as open year-round.
  • DirectionsTake the seasonal Runrun loop from Hiraizumi Station to Chusonji. Adult fare is ¥200 per ride, or ¥400 for two rides, less than the ¥550 day pass. Check the operating season, days and both journeys with the operator for your date. On non-operating days, check the ordinary Ichinoseki–Hiraizumi Line (一関平泉線), with different fares and valid tickets. Tsukimizaka’s uphill approach starts at the stop. The temple’s 850-metre estimate from car park 1 to the main hall is not the distance from the stop to the Golden Hall.
