Iwate trip: where should you stay and what should you see?

Stay near Morioka Station for city walks, old bank interiors and noodle dishes. Choose Hiraizumi for Motsuji’s garden and Chusonji’s Golden Hall on separate days, or Miyako for separate beach and market/cruise days. Hiraizumi temples need trains and local buses; Miyako beach needs the 106 and a local bus. Give more nights to the temples or coast you want to explore, rather than attempting all three areas in one day.

Which scenery would you like to see?

Visit Morioka Castle Site Park and the Red Brick Building for stone walls and architecture on a city walk. In Hiraizumi, explore Motsuji’s garden and Chusonji’s Golden Hall and Sankozo. Find white rocks and sea views at Miyako’s Jodogahama, or Kenji exhibitions at the Hanamaki museum. The attraction guide gathers prices, closures and walks after the bus ride.

Choose an itinerary for your stay

Your route changes depending on whether you keep Morioka as a base or stay closer to the temples or coast. Choose your trip length below and compare the two itineraries’ overnight bases and travel order.

2 days / 1 night

Choose Morioka’s castle park and architecture exhibitions or Hiraizumi’s two temples on separate days. Your departure must leave time to finish day-two sightseeing.

3 days / 2 nights

Stay two nights in Morioka with a Hiraizumi day trip. For the beach, compare a second night in Miyako followed by a return to Morioka the next day.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay in Morioka for separate day trips to Hanamaki’s literature exhibitions and Hiraizumi’s temples, or spend two nights in Miyako with beach and market/cruise visits on different days.

5 days / 4 nights

Choose literary exhibitions and two temples on separate days, or Hiraizumi temples and history exhibitions before the Miyako coast. The coastal route visits the Cultural Heritage Center on day four’s morning before changing from JR to the 106 bus. Both temple and centre dates must be Runrun operating days.

Which Morioka neighbourhood should you walk through?

Morioka · 盛岡

Cross Kaiun Bridge from the station to reach shopping streets, or continue from the castle park to Nakanohashi and Konyacho for building exteriors. Choose a walk that focuses on shopping, stone walls or architecture.

Station to Kaiun Bridge and Zaimokucho

Consider a route from Morioka Station across Kaiun Bridge through Zaimokucho’s shopping street, returning via Asahi Bridge and Kibushi green space. These neighbourhoods appear in the tourist association’s walks. Check individual opening days if you want to enter shops.

The park is about a 15-minute walk from the station. From here, continue past building exteriors around Nakanohashi and Konyacho, and plan the Red Brick Building’s interior as a separate visit. Hiraizumi · 平泉

Motsuji is about a seven-minute walk from Hiraizumi Station. At Chusonji, get off the temple bus and climb the Tsukimizaka approach. For both temples in one day, allow separately for the garden and Golden Hall/Sankozo, then connect to a station-bound bus after descending.

Miyako · 宮古

Take a local bus from the station to Jodogahama Visitor Center, then walk about 15 minutes to the beach. You can also board cruises at Jodogahama’s pier. The three-night itinerary keeps the beach walk and market/cruise on separate days. For its cruise day, choose a service departing Dezaki Pier and returning to the same pier.

Transport, meals and cameras

Choose meals around the day’s final attraction and route back to your accommodation. Rail passes and city bus tickets cover different sections; cameras do not replace local access information.

Choosing noodles in Morioka

Jajamen combines udon noodles with meat-miso, cucumber and spring onion. For noodles in broth, consider Morioka reimen with springy noodles, broth and kimchi. For small bowls of soba topped up a little at a time, look at wanko soba. Choose a restaurant in the area where you finish sightseeing, and check menus, reservations and group-size conditions individually.

Compare JR travel separately from bus costs

The Tohoku Main Line between Morioka and Hiraizumi and the Tohoku Shinkansen between Morioka and Shin-Hanamaki are covered JR sections of the JR EAST PASS. Ordinary tickets for only the journeys you need are another option. Compare other long-distance travel within the pass’s five or ten consecutive days, budgeting separately for Dendenmushi, the 106 bus, temple buses and admission.

Continuing to Hanamaki Onsen

For an onsen stay after the Kenji museum, distinguish Shin-Hanamaki from Hanamaki Station. Take a Hanamaki Onsen or Dai Onsen-bound bus from Hanamaki Station stand 4. The operator’s fares of ¥510 to Hanamaki Onsen and ¥580 to Dai Onsen may differ by route; check return services and fares for your date. Before adding an onsen stay, confirm museum-to-Hanamaki connections, hotel shuttles, bathing and meals. Kenji Shihi Iriguchi (賢治詩碑入口) and Kenji Kinenkan Iriguchi (賢治記念館口) are different stops.

Are temple and coast day trips easy if I stay in Morioka throughout?

You can visit Hiraizumi’s two temples by JR Tohoku Main Line on a day trip from Morioka. Allow time for temple buses, uphill sightseeing and descent before your return train.
