Where Should You Stay and What Should You See in Iwate?

Stay near Morioka Station for city walks, restored bank interiors, and local noodles. Stay in Hiraizumi to visit Motsuji’s garden and Chusonji’s Golden Hall on separate days, or in Miyako to enjoy the beach and the market and cruise on different days. Hiraizumi’s temples require trains and local buses; Miyako’s beach requires the 106 bus and city buses. Give overnight stays to the temples or coast you want to explore longer, instead of trying to visit all three areas in one day.

Which Scenery Would You Like to See?

Visit Morioka Castle Site Park and the Red Brick Building for city walks, stone walls, and architecture. In Hiraizumi, walk through Motsuji’s garden and visit Chusonji’s Golden Hall and Sankozo. See white rocks and the sea at Jodogahama in Miyako, or exhibits on Kenji’s work at the memorial museum in Hanamaki. The attraction guide brings together fees, closing days, and the walk after getting off the bus.

Choose an Itinerary for Your Stay

Your itinerary depends on whether you keep a Morioka base for day trips or stay closer to the temples or coast. Choose a trip length below, then compare the two itineraries’ overnight stops and travel order.

2 days, 1 night

Choose the castle park and architecture displays in Morioka, or two temples on separate days in Hiraizumi. Your second-day departure needs to leave time to finish sightseeing.

3 days, 2 nights

Stay two nights in Morioka for a Hiraizumi day trip. For the beach, compare a trip with the second night in Miyako and a return to Morioka the following day.

4 days, 3 nights

Keep a Morioka base for separate day trips to Hanamaki’s literary exhibits and Hiraizumi’s temples, or stay two nights in Miyako for the beach and for the market and cruise on different days.

5 days, 4 nights

Choose separate days for literary exhibits and two temples, or continue from the temples and exhibits on historic Hiraizumi to Miyako’s coast. The coastal trip visits the Cultural Heritage Center on the fourth morning, then changes between JR trains and the 106 bus. Both the temple day and center day must be Runrun service days.

The Temples and Coast Require Further Travel from the Station

Hiraizumi: Start with Motsuji near the Station

Hiraizumi · 平泉

Motsuji is about a seven-minute walk from Hiraizumi Station. Chusonji requires a temple-bound bus followed by the uphill Tsukimizaka approach. To visit both in one day, allow separate time for the garden and Golden Hall and Sankozo, then connect with a bus back to the station after descending.

Miyako: Beach Walks and Cruises from Dezaki

Miyako · 宮古

Take a city bus from Miyako Station to Jodogahama Visitor Center, then walk about 15 minutes to the beach. You can also board a cruise at Jodogahama’s landing. The four-day, three-night itinerary with separate beach and cruise days splits the beach walk from the market visit and sailing, using a cruise that leaves Dezaki Pier and returns to the same pier.

Transportation, Food, and Cameras

Choose meals around the day’s last sightseeing stop and the route back to your accommodation. Rail passes and city bus tickets cover different services; cameras cannot replace local travel guidance.

Choose a Local Noodle Dish in Morioka

Jajamen combines udon noodles with a meat-and-miso topping, cucumber, and green onion. For noodles in broth, consider Morioka reimen, with springy noodles, broth, and kimchi. For repeated small servings of soba, look into wanko soba. Choose a restaurant in the neighborhood where you finish sightseeing, then check its menu, reservation rules, and party-size conditions.

Traveling to Hanamaki Onsen

To add a hot-spring stay after the Kenji memorial museum, distinguish Shin-Hanamaki Station from Hanamaki Station. Buses for Hanamaki Onsen and Dai Onsen leave from stop 4 in front of Hanamaki Station. The operator lists ¥510 from Hanamaki Station to Hanamaki Onsen and ¥580 to Dai Onsen, but fares can vary by route; check return services and fares for your date. Before adding a stay, confirm the connection from the museum to Hanamaki Station and the inn’s shuttle, bathing, and meal conditions. Kenji Shihi Iriguchi (賢治詩碑入口) and Kenji Kinenkan-guchi (賢治記念館口) are different stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the temples and coast easy day trips if I keep a Morioka hotel?

You can visit Hiraizumi’s two temples on a day trip from Morioka using the JR Tohoku Main Line. Allow time for temple-bound buses, the uphill visit and descent, and the return train. Miyako’s coast adds city buses and walking after the 106 bus. For a relaxed Jodogahama walk or time for the market and cruise too, compare itineraries with one or two nights in Miyako.
