Iwate: where should I stay, and what should I see?
Stay near Morioka Station for city walks, restored bank interiors and noodles. Choose Hiraizumi to give Motsuji and Konjikido separate days, or Miyako for beach walks, markets and cruises. Temple visits use rail and local buses; Miyako uses route 106 and city buses. Allocate nights to the temples or coast you want more time for instead of visiting all three areas in one day.
What scenery would you like to see?
Choose Morioka Castle Site Park and the Red Brick Building for stone walls and architecture. Hiraizumi has Motsuji’s garden, Konjikido and Sankozo. See white rocks and sea at Miyako’s Jodogahama, or Kenji’s works at Hanamaki’s museum. Attraction guidance covers admission, closures and walking after buses.
Choose an itinerary for your length of stay
Itineraries depend on staying in Morioka for day trips or sleeping near temples/coast. Choose trip length below, then compare each plan’s bases and travel order.
2 days / 1 night
Choose Morioka park/architecture or Hiraizumi temples on separate days. Your departure must leave time for day-2 viewing.
3 days / 2 nights
Stay two Morioka nights for a Hiraizumi day trip. For the beach, compare a second night in Miyako followed by a Morioka return.
4 days / 3 nights
Stay in Morioka for separate Hanamaki literature/Hiraizumi days, or two Miyako nights for beach walks, markets and cruises.
5 days / 4 nights
Choose literature/two separate temple days, or temple/history displays followed by Miyako coast. The coastal plan visits the heritage centre on day 4 morning before JR/route 106; both temple and centre dates need Run Run operations.
Where to stay
Morioka Station · 盛岡駅
Stay near Morioka Station for castle-site walks and the Red Brick Building, or onward temple/coastal trips. Use Shinkansen, city buses and route 106 to Miyako. Walk or take city buses to the castle-site park and Nakanohashi.

Hiraizumi Station · 平泉駅
Stay near Hiraizumi Station to give Motsuji’s garden and Chusonji’s Konjikido separate days. Walk to Motsuji; Chusonji needs a temple-bound bus and uphill approach. From Shinkansen, compare JR Tohoku Main Line connections at Ichinoseki.
Miyako Station · 宮古駅
Stay one or two Miyako nights for leisurely Jodogahama walks, market visits and cruises. Station-area buses serve the beach and route 106 returns to Morioka. For seaside accommodation, check station access and hotel shuttles.
Which Morioka neighbourhoods should I walk?
Morioka · 盛岡
Cross Kaiun Bridge from the station for shopping streets, or continue from the park through Nakanohashi/Konyacho for building exteriors. Choose shopping or stone-wall/architecture walks.
Station to Kaiun Bridge and Zaimokucho
Compare a walk over Kaiun Bridge to Zaimokucho shops, returning via Asahi Bridge and Kibushi green space. These areas appear in tourism association walking routes. Check individual shop days before going inside.
Park to Nakanohashi and Konyacho
Morioka Castle Site Park · 盛岡城跡公園
Walk about 15 minutes from the station. For park and Red Brick Building, continue around Nakanohashi/Konyacho exteriors. Entry to every building is not included; avoid Tuesdays for Red Brick Building interiors.

Temples and coast need more travel after the station
Hiraizumi: start with nearby Motsuji
Hiraizumi · 平泉
Motsuji is about seven minutes from the station on foot. Chusonji adds uphill Tsukimizaka walking after a temple bus. For both in one day, allow time for the garden, Konjikido and Sankozo separately, then catch your return bus after descending.
Miyako: beach walks and Dezaki cruises
Miyako · 宮古
Take a local bus to Jodogahama Visitor Center, then walk about 15 minutes to the beach. Cruises also board at Jodogahama Pier. The four-day plan separates beach walks from market and cruise days and uses a Dezaki departure returning to the same pier.

Transport, food and cameras
Choose meals around your final sight and accommodation return. Rail passes/city tickets cover different routes, and cameras do not replace access guidance.
Choosing Morioka noodles
Jajamen mixes udon noodles with meat/miso, cucumber and spring onion. For soup, compare Morioka reimen’s springy noodles, broth and kimchi. Wanko soba serves small portions repeatedly in little bowls. Choose restaurants where sightseeing ends, checking individual menus, bookings and group conditions.
Compare JR and bus costs separately
JR EAST PASS covers Morioka–Hiraizumi Tohoku Main Line and Morioka–Shin-Hanamaki Tohoku Shinkansen. Ordinary tickets are another option. Compare other long journeys within five/ten consecutive days; Dendenmushi, route 106, temple buses and admission are extra.

Travelling to Hanamaki hot springs
For hot-spring nights after Kenji museum, distinguish Shin-Hanamaki from Hanamaki Station. From Hanamaki stop 4 take a Hanamaki Onsen/Dai Onsen-bound bus. Operator-listed JPY 510/JPY 580 respectively may vary by route; check dated returns/fares. Before adding nights, check museum-to-Hanamaki links and hotel shuttles, bathing and meals. 賢治詩碑入口 and 賢治記念館口 are different stops.
