Where should you stay and what should you see in Iwate?
Stay near Morioka Station for city walks, an old bank building’s interiors and noodle dishes. Choose Hiraizumi to visit Motsu-ji’s garden and Chuson-ji’s Golden Hall on separate days, or Miyako for beach walks and a market-and-cruise day. Reach Hiraizumi’s temples by train and local bus, and Miyako’s beach by the 106 bus and city bus. Rather than fitting all three destinations into one day, allocate hotel nights to the temples or coast you want to explore longer.
Which scenery would you like to see?
Visit Morioka Castle Site Park and the Akarenga building for stone walls and architecture on a city walk. In Hiraizumi, walk through Motsu-ji’s garden and visit Chuson-ji’s Golden Hall and Sankozo. For white rocks and sea views, choose Jodogahama in Miyako; for Kenji’s works, choose his museum in Hanamaki. The attraction guides bring together fees, closures and walks after leaving the bus.
Choose an itinerary for your stay
Your route depends on whether you keep one Morioka hotel and take day trips or stay near the temples or coast. Choose your trip length below, then compare the two routes’ hotel locations and order of travel.
1 night, 2 days
Choose Morioka’s castle park and architecture exhibitions, or Hiraizumi’s temples on separate days. Your departure must leave time to finish day two’s visit.
2 nights, 3 days
Stay two nights in Morioka and visit Hiraizumi for the day. For the beach, compare a route with the second night in Miyako and a return to Morioka the following day.
3 nights, 4 days
Stay in Morioka for separate day trips to Hanamaki’s literature exhibitions and Hiraizumi’s temples, or spend two nights in Miyako for a beach day and a separate market-and-cruise day.
4 nights, 5 days
Choose literature exhibitions and the two temples on separate days, or the temples and historic Hiraizumi exhibitions followed by Miyako’s coast. The coast route visits the Cultural Heritage Center on day four’s morning, then connects JR trains and the 106 bus. Both temple and centre days must match Run Run operating dates.

Which Morioka neighbourhoods should you walk through?
Morioka · 盛岡
Cross Kaiun Bridge from Morioka Station to explore shopping streets, or continue from the castle park to Nakanohashi and Konya-cho for building exteriors. Choose your walk according to whether you prefer shopping or stone walls and architecture.
From the station to Kaiun Bridge and Zaimoku-cho
Consider crossing Kaiun Bridge from Morioka Station, walking through Zaimoku-cho’s shopping street and returning via Asahi Bridge and the Kibushi green space. These neighbourhoods feature in the tourism association’s walking route. If visiting shops, check each shop’s opening days separately.
From the castle park to Nakanohashi and Konya-cho
Morioka Castle Site Park · 盛岡城跡公園
The castle park is about 15 minutes’ walk from the station. To explore both the park and Akarenga building, add an exterior architecture walk around Nakanohashi and Konya-cho. This does not give unrestricted indoor access to every building; avoid Tuesdays for the Akarenga interior.

The temples and coast require onward travel from the station
Hiraizumi: start at Motsu-ji near the station
Hiraizumi · 平泉
Motsu-ji is about seven minutes’ walk from Hiraizumi Station. At Chuson-ji, walk uphill along Tsukimizaka after leaving the temple bus. To visit both in one day, allow separate time for the garden, Golden Hall and Sankozo, then take a bus back to the station after descending.
Miyako: a beach walk and cruise from Dezaki
Miyako · 宮古
Take a city bus from Miyako Station to Jodogahama Visitor Center, then walk about 15 minutes to the beach. You can also board cruises at Jodogahama’s pier. The four-day route with separate beach and cruise days divides the beach walk from the market and boat trip, using a service that departs from and returns to Dezaki Pier.

Transport, food and cameras
Choose meals according to your last sightseeing stop and route back to the hotel. Rail passes and city-bus passes cover different journeys; the camera does not replace local travel guidance.
Choosing noodles in Morioka
Jajamen mixes udon noodles with meat miso, cucumber and spring onion. For noodles in broth, consider Morioka reimen, with firm noodles, broth and kimchi. Wanko soba offers repeated small bowls of soba. Choose a restaurant near where your sightseeing ends, and confirm menus, bookings and group-size conditions with the restaurant.
Compare JR journeys and bus costs separately
The Morioka–Hiraizumi Tohoku Main Line and Morioka–Shin-Hanamaki Tohoku Shinkansen are covered JR sections of the JR East Pass. You can also buy individual tickets just for the journeys needed. Compare other long-distance journeys within the pass’s five or ten consecutive days, budgeting Dendenmushi, the 106 bus, temple buses and admission separately.

Check the Jodogahama camera’s capture time first
The Ministry of the Environment’s original page displays updated images from the Jodogahama rest-house camera. Check the image acquisition time before viewing the beach. An old image cannot establish today’s weather, cruise operation or path access; confirm sailings with the cruise operator.

Travelling to Hanamaki’s hot springs
If changing to a hot-spring stay after the Kenji museum, distinguish Shin-Hanamaki Station from Hanamaki Station. Take a Hanamaki Onsen/Dai Onsen-bound bus from Hanamaki Station stop 4. The operator’s fares of JPY 510 to Hanamaki Onsen and JPY 580 to Dai Onsen may vary by route; check both services and fares for your date. Before adding an onsen stay, confirm the museum-to-Hanamaki Station connection and hotel shuttle, bathing and meal conditions. Kenji Shihi Iriguchi (賢治詩碑入口) and Kenji Kinenkan Iriguchi (賢治記念館口) are different stops.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit both the temples and coast on day trips while staying in Morioka?
You can visit Hiraizumi’s two temples on a day trip from Morioka using the JR Tohoku Main Line. Leave time for temple buses, uphill visits and the descent before your return train.
