After visiting and eating, take the left-loop bus from Bus Center stop 14 to Morioka Station. Stay at the same nearby hotel; tomorrow, walk through the park and Nakanohashi.
Akarenga opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. It closes on Tuesdays and 29 December–3 January; on those dates, move the indoor visit to another day and spend time at the park or having a meal. The building has no lift or lockers. Ask which areas you can access if stairs are difficult.
Day 2 / Morioka hotel → castle site/Nakanohashi → Morioka night
Explore the park and Nakanohashi without changing hotels. Allow time for city walks and meals before tomorrow’s Hanamaki trip.

Start your morning walk from Morioka Station; the association gives about 15 minutes to the park. Alternatively, board the left-loop Dendenmushi at stop 16 for 盛岡城跡公園. The association’s name 盛岡城跡公園前 refers to this same park stop.
- Castle-site park → Nakanohashi lunch and centre walk
After exploring the stone walls and bridge, eat near Nakanohashi and walk around the centre at leisure. Return towards the station and rest at the same hotel.

Day 3 / Morioka → Shin-Hanamaki → Kenji museum → Morioka night
Visit Hanamaki’s literature exhibitions from Morioka. Allow for buses and uphill walking after arrival at Shin-Hanamaki.

Day 4 / Morioka → Hiraizumi → Motsu-ji → Hiraizumi night
Move to Hiraizumi for the garden, the first of separate temple days.

Take ordinary JR Tohoku Main Line trains towards Hiraizumi, checking direct services, changes and stops for your date. The walk to Motsu-ji is officially about seven minutes. Travelling in the morning leaves time for the temples and meals.

Walk seven minutes to the garden around Oizumigaike. It opens from 08:30 to 17:00, closing at 16:30 from 5 November to 4 March. If arriving in the afternoon, leave time to visit and exit before closing.
- Motsu-ji → Garden, rest and admission
After the garden, return towards the station for a meal and your overnight stay. Adult admission is JPY 700. Tomorrow, visit the Golden Hall and Sankozo before leaving Hiraizumi.
Return towards the station after the garden, finishing before seasonal closing.
Day 5 / Hiraizumi hotel → Chuson-ji → station departure
Use the final Hiraizumi morning for Chuson-ji.

Climb Tsukimizaka, pass the main hall and visit the Golden Hall and Sankozo. An ordinary adult ticket costs JPY 1,000. Visiting hours are 08:30–17:00 from 1 March to 3 November, with closing at 16:30 on other dates. Ticket sales end ten minutes before closing. Allow time for the uphill and downhill walks in addition to bus travel, and return along the same approach. Special openings require extra tickets.

To visit Chuson-ji on the final day, choose return buses and trains that allow time for sightseeing and the downhill walk. For a morning departure, move the visit earlier or to another trip, and go straight to the station.

Return to your hotel near the station, have dinner and stay overnight. Ordinary adult admission to both temples totals JPY 1,700; two Run Run rides cost JPY 400.

This route is available only on the Run Run operating dates listed above. The centre is at 44 Hanadate, Hiraizumi, and is a different facility from the similarly named World Heritage Guidance Center.

Take the 106 bus from Morioka Station east-side stop 7 to Miyako Station. On arrival, eat near Miyako Station and continue to your hotel. Visit Jodogahama tomorrow.
Both the temple day and centre day must fall on Run Run operating dates. Check centre closures, the centre-to-station bus, Hiraizumi–Morioka JR trains and the 106 service to Miyako together. After the morning exhibitions, allow time between JR and the 106 bus for reaching the stop, eating and waiting. Stay overnight in Miyako and visit the beach tomorrow.
Day 5 / Miyako Station → Jodogahama → Miyako Station → departure from Morioka Station
Walk along Jodogahama in the morning, then leave via Miyako and Morioka.

Take a city bus from Jodogahama back to Miyako Station, then the 106 bus to Morioka. Check the city-bus and long-distance-bus connection together with your onward train from Morioka. If the connection is tight, shorten the beach walk and prioritise the return journey.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use the JR East Pass again the next day after staying in Hiraizumi?
Yes, if both JR travel dates fall within the pass’s consecutive validity period. Current official guidance lists five or ten consecutive days from the start date. Temple buses, admission and hotels cost extra. Before buying, compare ordinary tickets with the pass using all your long-distance JR journeys, including those outside Iwate.
