Which Iwate sights would you like to see?
Walk Morioka’s stone walls and explore restored bank interiors. Hiraizumi has Oizumi-ga-ike garden, Konjikido and Sankozo. For sea scenery, visit Miyako’s Jodogahama; for Kenji works, Hanamaki’s museum. Chusonji and the memorial museum need uphill walking after buses; allow travel/viewing time.

Morioka Castle Site Park

Follow stone walls and park paths for city walks. After Taiko Bridge, continue with Nakanohashi architecture or meals.

- DirectionsMorioka Tourism Association gives about 15 minutes on foot from the station. For buses, take anticlockwise Dendenmushi from stop 16 to the park. Association wording 盛岡城跡公園前 and operator wording 盛岡城跡公園 refer to the stop. Official bus time about six minutes; allow stone-wall viewing separately.

Iwate Bank Red Brick Building
岩手銀行赤レンガ館
Explore restored bank reception and meeting rooms and banking-era material. Free areas are an option; individual admission to the paid restored interiors costs JPY 300 for visitors aged 16+. Avoid Tuesday closures for indoor visits.

- DirectionsTake clockwise Dendenmushi from Morioka Station to Bus Center, then walk about one minute. Return on the anticlockwise service. Both directions serve the bus centre; adult rides JPY 150 each. Facility guidance gives about ten minutes by bus or 30 minutes walking directly from the station. Visiting the park en route changes walking time.

Chusonji
Chūson-ji Temple中尊寺
See Konjikido and Sankozo at Chusonji, climbing Tsukimizaka from the bus stop. Allow viewing and descent on the same path. Adult standard admission including these areas costs JPY 1,000.
- AdmissionStandard admission costs JPY 1,000 for general visitors, JPY 700 for high school students, JPY 500 for junior high students and JPY 300 for primary students. It covers Konjikido, Sankozo, the sutra repository and former protective hall. This differs from the JPY 1,600 combined special hidden-Buddha viewing ticket.
- HoursOpening hours are 08:30–17:00 from 1 March–3 November and 08:30–16:30 from 4 November–end February. The temple is listed as open year-round.
- DirectionsSeasonal Run Run serves Chusonji from Hiraizumi Station. Adult rides JPY 200, two JPY 400 versus day pass JPY 550. Check operating period/days and returns. On other dates, compare regular Ichinoseki–Hiraizumi Line (一関平泉線), with different fares/tickets. Tsukimizaka starts at the stop. The temple’s roughly 850 m from parking area 1 to main hall is not a stop-to-Konjikido distance.

Motsuji
Motsuji Temple毛越寺
Walk Motsuji’s garden around Oizumi-ga-ike before returning towards Hiraizumi Station. To visit Konjikido and Sankozo as well, allow time for the garden and exhibitions separately.

- DirectionsAbout 0.7 km or seven minutes on foot from Hiraizumi Station. Visiting Motsuji then returning to the station for a Chusonji bus avoids assuming a direct facility-to-facility service.
Jodogahama
浄土ヶ浜
Walk the beach for views of white rocks and blue sea. Beach walks, cruises and small-boat experiences are separate choices; check your boat product’s price and same-day operation.
- Walking scopeDaylight beach walks; cruises, paid experiences and parking extra. Night visits excluded. Follow dated weather/access restrictions. The free park circular shuttle is seasonal and differs from regular city buses.
- DirectionsFrom Miyako Station, choose a Miyako Hospital-bound bus via 浄土ヶ浜ビジターセンター. City guidance separates about 13 minutes riding from 15 minutes walking afterwards. This plan uses the adult JPY 500 Jodogahama/Miyako Port day pass for returns. Check weekday-specific operator returns.
Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum
宮沢賢治記念館
Explore Kenji Miyazawa’s work and life, then look over Hanamaki from the viewing lounge. Individual adult admission costs JPY 350. Even after a Shin-Hanamaki bus, there is uphill walking; check stairs in access guidance first.

- DirectionsTake Tsuchizawa Line (土沢線) from Shin-Hanamaki to 賢治記念館口, then walk uphill about 15 minutes. City guidance dated 6 July 2026 and the association both give this walking time; the association lists 367 steps. Ask about other access if stairs are difficult. Latest city guidebook fare adult JPY 170 from Shin-Hanamaki, about four minutes riding. Return towards Michi-no-Eki Towa to Shin-Hanamaki stop 5, about two minutes riding. Check both journeys in city transport guidance.

Hiraizumi Cultural Heritage Center
平泉文化遺産センター
After temple walks, explore historical Hiraizumi through terrain models with video and audio, alongside locally excavated objects. This differs from the similarly named World Heritage Guidance Center.

- DirectionsAddress: 44 Hanadate, Hiraizumi. The five-day temple/coast plan takes Run Run from the station to heritage-centre stop: seven minutes outbound, 13 minutes circular return, adult JPY 200 per ride. In 2026 Run Run operates weekends/public holidays 11 April–29 November and daily 13–16 August. First morning departure 10:15; other dates need regular-route return/fare checks.

Frequently asked questions
How much does admission to Chusonji and Motsuji cost?
Individual adult standard admission is Chusonji JPY 1,000 + Motsuji JPY 700, JPY 1,700 for both. Chusonji special-opening combined tickets and transport are extra.
Does Jodogahama’s free circular shuttle operate in October?
No. Confirmed 2026 operations cover weekends/public holidays 1 July–30 September. In October use a regular Miyako bus via the visitor centre, then walk about 15 minutes to the beach. Regular fares or a city pass cost separately.
Can I visit the Red Brick Building on Tuesday?
The building closes on Tuesdays. Move indoor viewing to another day, using park walks/meals instead. The New Year closure runs from 29 December–3 January.
