JR-WEST All Area Pass: seven-day routes, exchange and reserved seats

JR-WEST All Area Pass

The JR-WEST All Area Pass covers designated railway, bus and ferry routes in western Japan for seven consecutive days. It includes the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka · 新大阪 to Hakata · 博多 and the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tsuruga · 敦賀 to Joetsu-Myoko · 上越妙高. It is a regional product, separate from the nationwide Japan Rail Pass.

When does this pass suit your itinerary?

Compare it with narrower regional passes if your seven-day itinerary includes both Sanyo and Hokuriku. If you stay in one area, compare the tickets or regional passes for the routes you actually need first.

Who can use it?

You need a passport issued by a government other than Japan and must have entered Japan with Temporary Visitor status. Your eligibility is checked at collection. Carry your passport while travelling. You cannot buy duplicate passes of this type for the same validity period or share one pass between travellers.

Prices and child fares

The official seven-day price is JPY 26,000 adult or JPY 13,000 child. The Japanese terms assess child ages 6–11 on the payment date. Check Trip.com’s displayed currency and actual selected-option price separately on the sales page.

Travelling with young children

Each pass holder may bring up to two children aged 1–5 free of charge. A child pass is needed for the third or any additional child, for a child occupying their own reserved seat, or for a child travelling alone. Infants under one year travel free when they do not need their own reserved seat.

Start date and the final day

The pass is valid from 00:00 on your chosen start date to 24:00 on the seventh consecutive day, Japan time. If you are already on a train when the final day ends, an exception continues the basic-fare coverage until you leave the ticket gate and the train-charge coverage until you get off that same train.

An exchange voucher is not a boarding ticket

The electronic voucher issued by an agency must be exchanged for the actual pass. You cannot board with the voucher alone. The activation and QR-gate procedure for WEST QR tickets does not apply.

Buying this option on Trip.com

Select the JR West All-Area seven-day electronic exchange-order option. Exchange the voucher for a JR paper pass before use. The seller states an exchange period of 90 days from booking; do not treat that as identical to JR’s three-month-from-issue rule. Exchange on a date that satisfies both the deadline on your voucher and JR’s exchange conditions.

Check the selected option’s cancellation deadline and fees before paying. The seller also restricts cancellation after activation or reservation, so the headline “free cancellation” wording does not describe every situation. Contact the seller to cancel an exchange order; after exchange, ask about refunds under JR’s issued-pass rules.

JR assesses child fares using ages 6–11 on the payment date. If a child turns six or twelve between purchase and travel, confirm the correct selling option with the seller before buying. Plan from the official coverage described here rather than translated train names on the sales page.

Covered railways and exclusions

The official map also includes Noto Railway between Nanao · 七尾 and Wakura-Onsen · 和倉温泉, Kyoto Tango Railway and Chizu Express. IR Ishikawa Railway, Ainokaze Toyama Railway and Hapi-Line Fukui are covered only under specified through-travel conditions; intermediate stops or journeys outside those conditions require separate fares. The Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded.

For IR Ishikawa Railway, travel through the full Kanazawa · 金沢–Tsubata · 津幡 section on an eligible local or limited express, without getting off at an intermediate station. For Ainokaze Toyama Railway, take a local train through Toyama · 富山–Takaoka · 高岡 without getting off at an intermediate station. Hapi-Line Fukui covers only the local connection between Fukui · 福井 and Echizen-Hanando · 越前花堂. These exceptions connect to JR routes; extending beyond the permitted section requires a separate fare.

Sanyo Shinkansen S Work cars are excluded: buy separate basic-fare and train-charge tickets for the whole section. Ordinary private compartments on conventional limited expresses, including WEST EXPRESS Ginga Family Cabins and Yakumo semi-compartments, have basic-fare coverage only; buy the separate charge tickets before boarding.

Covered buses and the Miyajima ferry

Eligible local West Japan JR Bus routes and designated Chugoku JR Bus routes within the map area are covered. West Japan JR Bus highway services are excluded, but the Japanese terms specifically include Chugoku JR Bus’s Super Hagi service. Do not apply one rule to all highway buses. The Miyajima ferry requires a separate visitor-tax payment.

On West Japan JR Bus, take one numbered boarding ticket per traveller. When you get off, show the pass to the driver and put only the numbered ticket into the fare box. Keep your pass.

Collection requirements by purchase method

Exchange an E-MCO at a designated location with your passport within three months of issue and no later than the travel date. For a direct official online purchase, bring the reservation number, your chosen four-digit identification number, the physical payment card and your passport. If your passport has no IC chip, collect at a staffed counter.

Reserved seats and additional accommodation charges

Ordinary Car reserved-seat use is unlimited, but reserve before boarding. With an agency exchange order, exchange for the actual pass first. After collection, ticket-machine reservations are limited to six; use a counter from the seventh reservation onwards. Green Car, GranClass, sleeping accommodation and A-Seat require separate charges.

For Green Car or sleeper accommodation on a limited express or Shinkansen, obtain the separate accommodation and express tickets before boarding. Local-train Green Cars need their separate Green ticket. Paid A-Seat seating also needs its own charge. The Ordinary Car pass does not cover an upgrade simply by paying a difference between pass prices.

Advance online reservations for direct JR purchases

A pass bought directly through JR’s WEST-TR service allows reservations for up to six trains before collection. This facility does not apply to agency exchange orders. Before collection, the combined total of reservations, changes and cancellations is limited to 28 per booking.

If you miss a train or it is full

A train with reserved seats only has no unreserved car. If you miss your reserved train, reserve a seat on a later service. Standing is possible only where that specific service provides a standing-ticket arrangement; check the train’s conditions first.

Changes, cancellations and refunds

For an unexchanged E-MCO, contact the selling agency within one year of issue; its cancellation fees apply. After exchange, ask at an authorised counter about an unused pass: the agency-exchange-order refund fee is 10%, with a minimum of JPY 220, while a direct WEST-TR purchase has a JPY 560 fee per person. Direct purchases have separate deadlines, including those linked to the first reserved train’s departure. Refunds are not offered after use begins or for service cancellations and delays.

From purchase to boarding

  1. Check your Temporary Visitor eligibility and seven consecutive travel days. Compare every planned section with the official map.

  2. Check that you bought the JR-WEST All Area seven-day product. Agency voucher collection differs from collection of a direct WEST-TR purchase.

  3. Bring the agency exchange order and every traveller’s passport to a designated location to collect the actual pass. A direct online purchase also requires the reservation number, four-digit identification number and payment card.

  4. Reserve each required seat before boarding. Agency customers reserve after exchange; after six machine reservations, make further bookings at a counter.

  5. Check route coverage and accommodation type, then board the car and seat you reserved. Do not board a train with reserved seats only without the required reservation.

  6. Carry your passport while travelling. Buy separate tickets and charges for excluded sections or accommodation requiring additional payment.

  7. If you cancel, check the refund counter and deadline for your purchase channel before starting use. The start date and pass type cannot be changed after collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the nationwide Japan Rail Pass?

No. The JR-WEST All Area Pass is a regional product. The Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded.

Can I pass through a ticket gate with the electronic voucher?

No. The voucher is an exchange order. Collect the actual pass before boarding; the QR-boarding-ticket procedure does not apply.

Can I reserve seats before arriving in Japan after buying on Trip.com?

An agency E-MCO cannot be used to reserve seats before exchange for the actual pass. That differs from the pre-collection booking facility for a direct WEST-TR purchase.

Can I use only six reserved seats?

Reserved-seat use itself is unlimited. Machine bookings are limited to six; make further reservations at a staffed counter.

Are Green Car seats included?

Green Car, GranClass and sleeping accommodation require separate charges. Ordinary Car reserved-seat coverage does not extend automatically to other accommodation.

Are refund fees the same for direct JR and agency purchases?

No. For an unused pass after collection, an agency exchange-order purchase has a 10% fee, with a minimum of JPY 220; a direct WEST-TR purchase has a JPY 560 fee. The refund locations and deadlines also differ by purchase channel.

Can I use a Sanyo Shinkansen S Work car?

No. Buy separate basic-fare and train-charge tickets for the whole section. An Ordinary Car seat reservation with this pass does not include S Work cars.

Is the JR-WEST All Area Pass worth it?

Compare the JPY 26,000 adult price with the individual tickets or narrower passes for your actual seven-day itinerary. Journeys across Sanyo and Hokuriku may suit this pass; mostly local travel in one area may cost less with a smaller pass or separate tickets.

Can I use it to reach Fukuoka?

You can take the covered Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hakata in Fukuoka · 福岡. The Kyushu Shinkansen beyond Hakata is excluded. A train ticket to Hakata does not mean that all onward transport in the city is included.

Is there a five-day JR-WEST All Area Pass?

No. This pass is valid for seven consecutive days. Other JR West regional passes have different areas and durations; compare the actual product name and covered routes.
