JR-WEST All Area Pass: seven days, routes, exchange and reservations
JR-WEST All Area Pass
The JR-WEST All Area Pass covers specified rail, bus and ferry routes in western Japan for seven consecutive days. It includes the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka (新大阪) to Hakata (博多) and the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tsuruga (敦賀) to Joetsumyoko (上越妙高). It is different from the nationwide JAPAN RAIL PASS.
Which itinerary suits this pass?
Compare it with narrower regional passes if you plan to travel in both Sanyo and Hokuriku within seven days. If staying in one region, start by comparing individual tickets and the relevant regional pass.
Who can use it?
You must hold a passport issued by a government outside Japan and enter Japan under Temporary Visitor status. Eligibility is checked at collection; carry your passport while travelling. You cannot buy duplicate passes for the same validity period or share one pass between travellers.
Prices and child fares
The official seven-day price is JPY 26,000 for adults and JPY 13,000 for children. Japanese conditions assess children as aged 6–11 on the payment date. Check Trip.com’s display currency and actual option price separately on the purchase screen.
Travelling with young children
Each pass holder can accompany two children aged 1–5 free. The third child onwards needs a child pass, as does a child using their own reserved seat or travelling alone. Children under one travel free.
Start date and final day
The pass runs from midnight at the start of your chosen date to midnight at the end of day seven. If a train journey continues from the final day, the basic fare remains valid until you leave the gate and the train charge until you leave that same train.
Your voucher is not the boarding pass
An electronic voucher from a travel agency is an Exchange Order that must be exchanged for the actual pass. You cannot board with the voucher alone. WEST QR activation and gate instructions do not apply to it.
Buying through Trip.com
Choose the JR-WEST All Area seven-day electronic exchange voucher. Exchange it for a JR paper pass before travelling. The reviewed seller guidance states exchange within 90 days of booking; do not calculate that as identical to JR’s three-month period from issue. Exchange on a date meeting both the voucher deadline and JR conditions.
Check the selected option’s cancellation deadline and fees before payment. Seller guidance also lists restrictions after activation or reservation, so the opening “free cancellation” wording does not establish every condition. Before exchange, contact the seller about voucher cancellation; after JR issues the actual pass, follow JR’s refund conditions.
JR defines children as aged 6–11 on the payment date. If a child turns six or twelve between purchase and travel, ask the seller which option applies before buying. Plan from the official coverage boundaries in this guide rather than relying on translated train names in a sales listing.
Included routes
The official map also includes Noto Railway between Nanao (七尾) and Wakuraonsen (和倉温泉), Kyoto Tango Railway and covered Chizu Express sections. IR Ishikawa, Ainokaze Toyama and HAPI-LINE FUKUI have restricted through-travel sections; intermediate stops or travel beyond them need separate fares. The Tokaido and Kyushu Shinkansen are excluded.
Buses and the Miyajima ferry
Covered local West Japan JR Bus routes and specified JR Chugoku Bus routes are included. West Japan JR Bus highway services are excluded, but the Japanese conditions separately include JR Chugoku Bus’s Super Hagi. Do not extend that exception to all highway buses. The Miyajima ferry’s visitor tax is paid separately.
Collection by purchase channel
Exchange an E-MCO at a designated location with your passport within three months of issue and no later than the travel date. For a direct JR online purchase, bring the reservation number, your chosen four-digit code, the physical payment card and passport. If your passport has no IC chip, collect at a counter.
Seat reservations
Ordinary Car reserved-seat use is unlimited, but reserve before boarding. For an agency voucher, book after exchanging the actual pass. After collection, machines allow up to six reservations; use a counter from the seventh onwards. Green Car, GranClass, sleeping berths and A-seat require separate charges.
Advance reservations through WEST-TR
A pass bought directly through JR’s WEST-TR can have up to six trains reserved before collection. This does not apply to agency Exchange Orders. Before collection, bookings, changes and cancellations are limited to a combined 28 actions per reservation.
Missed trains and full seats
A train with only reserved seats has no non-reserved seating. If you miss your booked train, make a new reservation on a later train. When a train is full, check whether that specific service offers standing accommodation.
Cancellation and refunds
For an unexchanged E-MCO, contact the selling agency within one year of issue; the seller’s fees apply. Refund an exchanged unused pass at an authorised counter: agency exchange purchases have a 10% fee, minimum JPY 220, while direct WEST-TR purchases have a JPY 560 fee per person. For direct purchases, also check deadlines such as departure of the first reserved train. No refund is available after use starts or because of suspended or delayed services.
From purchase to boarding
Check your Temporary Visitor status and seven consecutive travel days, then compare every planned section with the official coverage map.
Check that your purchase is the JR-WEST All Area seven-day pass. Distinguish agency-voucher collection from a direct WEST-TR purchase.
Bring the agency voucher and every traveller’s passport to a designated exchange point. For direct online purchases, also bring the reservation number, four-digit code and payment card.
Reserve seats before boarding. Agency purchases require exchange first; after six reservations at a machine, use a counter for additional bookings.
Check route coverage and carriage class, then board the booked coach and seat. Do not board a train with only reserved seats without a reservation.
Carry your passport while travelling. Prepare separate tickets and charges for excluded sections or accommodation requiring an additional payment.
For cancellation, check your channel’s refund counter and deadline before use. After collecting the pass, you cannot change its start date or type.
