Admission

Admission is JPY 500 for adults and university students, or JPY 250 for primary, junior and senior high school pupils. Preschool children enter free. For groups of 20 or more, the standard fare is JPY 400 and the child/student fare JPY 200. Individual visits by primary and junior high school pupils who live in Hakodate or attend school there are listed as free.

Mashu-maru opens from 08:30 to 18:00 between April and October, with admission until 17:00. From November to March, it opens from 09:00 to 17:00, with admission until 16:00. The facility lists 31 December–3 January as its regular closure period, with any special opening announced annually. Check the facility website for temporary closure or opening notices on your date.

What can I see at Mashu-maru?

Go aboard and explore the wheelhouse

See the wheelhouse and onboard displays of the former Seikan ferry. The moored ship is a museum; this visit does not involve travelling on an operating passenger ferry.

How to get to Mashu-maru

Walk northwest from JR Hakodate Station towards Hakodate Bay. When you see a ship on your left with an ivory upper hull and blue lower hull, follow the waterfront towards it. Climb the stairs in the neighbouring building to the 2nd-floor boarding entrance. The stated walk from the station is about 4 minutes; allow extra time from your hotel to the station and for climbing stairs. There is no lift or escalator.

The facility lists 31 December–3 January as its regular closure period, with any special opening announced annually. Ship inspections, cleaning, repairs and bad weather can cause temporary closures too.
