Where should you stay in Hokkaido?

Choose Sapporo as your base for Otaru Canal walks and a confectionery factory visit, or Hakodate for harbour scenery and night views. Use New Chitose Airport for Sapporo and Otaru, and Hakodate Airport for Hakodate. To visit both, compare a five-day plan with two nights in Sapporo and two in Hakodate, departing from Hakodate Airport.

Would you prefer walks, views or exhibitions?

Choose Odori Park for a Sapporo city walk, or Otaru Canal for a waterfront walk. For observation decks, compare Sapporo TV Tower and Hakodate’s Goryokaku Tower. Shiroi Koibito Park has confectionery exhibitions; Mashu-maru has ship displays. To see Hakodate’s night view, compare an overnight stay there and ropeway operating dates.

Choose an itinerary for your stay

Compare a Sapporo stay for Otaru Canal walks and a confectionery factory visit with a Hakodate stay for harbour scenery and night views. To visit both cities, choose the five-day route that moves your base from Sapporo to Hakodate. Check flight times before adding sightseeing on arrival and departure days. Allow time to reach your hotel on day 1, and for airport travel, check-in and departure formalities on the last day.

1 night, 2 days

Choose one city: Sapporo’s sights and views in itinerary A, or Hakodate’s night view and Goryokaku in B. Stay one night in the city served by your airport.

2 nights, 3 days

For a canal-focused trip, stay two nights in Sapporo and spend the middle day in Otaru. For Hakodate’s night view and star-shaped fort, stay two nights in Hakodate and visit them on separate days. Add a final-day harbour walk only if airport travel allows.

3 nights, 4 days

Stay three nights in Sapporo and choose itinerary A for an Otaru Canal day trip or B for the Botanic Garden and exhibitions. Both visit Shiroi Koibito Park; B needs to fit the garden’s outdoor opening days.

4 nights, 5 days

Choose A for one night in Otaru and three in Sapporo if you want an evening by the canal, or B for two nights each in Sapporo and Hakodate if you also want Hakodate’s night view. A depends on the garden opening dates; B departs from Hakodate Airport.

Near Sapporo Station: a Botanic Garden walk

For a spring-to-autumn walk among trees and flowers near Sapporo Station, visit Hokkaido University Botanic Garden. Its setting offers a break from city streets and the university campus. The main gate is about a 10-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station’s south exit, and this paid facility is separate from the campus. The outdoor garden opens from 29 April to 3 November. With the glasshouse currently closed to visitors, it is not a winter alternative.

Miyanosawa: confectionery exhibitions and gardens

If you have seen Shiroi Koibito confectionery on your travels in Japan, visit its official Sapporo park to see how it is made. Factory tours and exhibitions are in the paid area; gardens and shops can be visited without a ticket. From Odori, take the Tozai Line towards Miyanosawa to the final stop, then walk about 7 minutes. Confectionery-making activities cost extra, with registration and advance reservation arrangements varying by activity.

Otaru: a canal day trip or an overnight stay?

Photograph Otaru Canal’s old warehouses by day and see gas lamps and warehouse lights reflected in the water in the evening. The canal is about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station. Plan around your return train when deciding whether to go back to Sapporo after the daytime view or stay later. For an unhurried dinner, consider a night in Otaru. A paid canal cruise is excluded from this route.

Hakodate: fort views, harbour walks and night scenery

Choose Goryokaku Tower for a view of the star-shaped fort, or Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse for harbour walks and shopping. The ropeway’s lower station is uphill from the waterfront warehouses. Three-day Hakodate itinerary B gives Goryokaku and the night view separate days. The ropeway is suspended from 20 October to 8 November 2026; exclude the summit visit during that period.

Transport, food and cameras

Choose meals between the day’s sights and your hotel rather than travelling to another city for food. Meals are excluded from itinerary subtotals. Menus, prices and last orders vary by restaurant.

Sapporo: choose the dish and the neighbourhood

Start with the dish you want: ramen, soup curry or jingisukan grilled lamb. The Sapporo Tourism Association’s restaurant lists let you search by food type and areas around Sapporo Station, Odori and Susukino. For dinner after the TV Tower, also check the subway direction back to your hotel.

Otaru: lunch or dinner after a canal walk

Lunch near the canal or station followed by a return to Sapporo differs from an overnight Otaru stay with time for dinner. For a day trip, choose your meal around restaurant hours and the return train. The canal path and nearby shops do not share the same hours.

Hakodate: meals near the station or by the harbour

Should you buy a JR pass or individual tickets?

JR costs depend on whether you travel only to the airport and Otaru or continue to Hakodate. Add any extra JR journeys to the individual-ticket totals below, then compare the pass price.

The Hokkaido Rail Pass and the two regional passes are available to people with a valid passport issued by a country other than Japan. Present the original passport when buying or exchanging the pass; a residence card or passport copy cannot replace it.

For an Otaru day trip from a Sapporo hotel

Four-day itinerary A includes airport JR return travel of JPY 2,460 and an Otaru return of JPY 1,600, totalling JPY 4,060. Without extra JR journeys, start with that individual-ticket cost. A Sapporo subway one-day pass cannot be used on JR to the airport or Otaru.

For travel from Sapporo to Hakodate

Five-day itinerary B has a JR subtotal of JPY 12,600, less than the advance-purchase JPY 22,000 five-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. Secure a reserved seat before boarding Hokuto. The pass excludes subways, trams, the Hokkaido Shinkansen and the South Hokkaido Railway. The Sapporo–Noboribetsu and Sapporo–Furano regional passes cover four consecutive days, with different coverage that does not extend to Hakodate or the whole five-day trip.

Check the season and your group’s walking needs

The outdoor Botanic Garden closes in winter, and ropeway maintenance or weather can interrupt services. If travelling with parents who find long walks difficult or children who need a pushchair, consider the uphill walk to the ropeway’s lower station and Mashu-maru’s stairs. Leave out visits that do not suit your group and compare another itinerary of the same length.

If you want to visit the Botanic Garden in winter

The outdoor garden cannot be visited in winter, and the glasshouse is currently closed to visitors. For a four-day trip, choose the route with Otaru Canal and Shiroi Koibito Park instead. Day 3 of the one-night Otaru and three-night Sapporo route has no winter replacement for the garden. Allow more time for walking and returning on snowy or icy paths.

If the ropeway is suspended

During the maintenance suspension from 20 October to 8 November 2026, omit the summit and walk from Jujigai towards the waterfront warehouses instead. Strong winds can affect services on other dates too. These routes do not include alternative summit transport by bus or taxi.

If hills or stairs are difficult

The lower ropeway station is about a 10-minute uphill walk from Jujigai. At Mashu-maru, stairs in the neighbouring building lead to the 2nd-floor boarding entrance; there is no lift or escalator. Skip the ship’s interior if stairs are difficult. If the walk to the lower station is unsuitable, separately check other transport available on your date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel around Hokkaido without renting a car?

Yes. Central Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate can be explored by JR, subway, tram and on foot. Check transport separately for other natural areas in Hokkaido. Shiroi Koibito Park involves walking from Miyanosawa Station, and Mount Hakodate’s lower ropeway station requires an uphill walk. Consider whether those walks suit your group.
