Where should I stay in Hokkaido?

Choose Sapporo for an Otaru Canal walk and a biscuit factory tour, or Hakodate for harbour scenery and night views. Use New Chitose Airport for Sapporo and Otaru, and Hakodate Airport for Hakodate. To see both cities, compare the five-day itinerary with two nights in Sapporo and two in Hakodate, departing from Hakodate Airport.

A walk, a viewpoint or an exhibition?

Choose Odori Park for a city walk in Sapporo, or Otaru Canal for a waterfront stroll. For views, compare Sapporo TV Tower with Goryokaku Tower in Hakodate. See biscuit exhibitions at Shiroi Koibito Park or a ferry exhibition at Mashu-maru. For Hakodate’s night view, plan a stay there and check ropeway operating dates.

Choose an itinerary

Stay in Sapporo for Otaru Canal and a biscuit factory tour, or in Hakodate for harbour scenery and night views. To see both cities, choose the five-day itinerary that moves accommodation from Sapporo to Hakodate. Check flight times before deciding whether to sightsee on arrival and departure days. Allow time to travel from the airport to your accommodation on day 1, and for the airport journey, check-in and departure procedures on the final day.

2 days / 1 night

Choose one city: A for central Sapporo and city views, or B for Hakodate’s night view and Goryokaku. Stay one night in the city that suits your airport.

3 days / 2 nights

For a canal-focused trip, stay two nights in Sapporo and spend the middle day in Otaru. For Hakodate’s night view and star-shaped fort, stay two nights in Hakodate and visit them on separate days. Add a final-day harbour walk only if you have enough time before travelling to the airport.

4 days / 3 nights

Stay three nights in Sapporo. Choose A for an Otaru Canal day trip, or B for the botanic garden and exhibitions. Both visit Shiroi Koibito Park; B requires an outdoor garden opening day.

5 days / 4 nights

Choose A for an evening by the canal, with one night in Otaru and three in Sapporo, or B for Hakodate’s night view, with two nights each in Sapporo and Hakodate. A requires a garden opening day; B departs from Hakodate Airport.

Plan separate days around the sights you want to see

Hokkaido · 北海道. Choose between Sapporo city walks, Otaru Canal and Hakodate’s viewpoints. Visit Miyanosawa and Otaru on different days, and compare a stay in Hakodate that involves changing accommodation.

Central Sapporo: Clock Tower, Odori Park and TV Tower

After walking through Odori Park, visit the TV Tower in the evening if you want to see the city lights. Sapporo Clock Tower is small, so you can also stop for an exterior photo. To see the old photographs and clock mechanism displays, arrive before standard last admission at 17:00. Check the official notice for evening openings. If you arrive late in Sapporo, split these visits between your first and final days.

Near Sapporo station: a botanic garden walk

From spring to autumn, walk among trees and flowers at the Botanic Garden, Hokkaido University, near Sapporo station. It offers a different setting from the city streets and university campus. The main gate is about ten minutes on foot from JR Sapporo station’s south exit. This is a paid facility separate from the campus. The outdoor garden opens from 29 April to 3 November; the glasshouse is currently closed, so it cannot serve as a winter alternative.

Miyanosawa: biscuit exhibitions and gardens

If you have seen Shiroi Koibito biscuits on your travels in Japan, visit the official park in Sapporo to see how they are made. Factory tours and exhibitions are in the paid area; gardens and shops can be visited without a ticket. From Odori, take the Tozai line to its terminus at Miyanosawa, then walk about seven minutes. Biscuit-making activities cost extra, and application and advance booking requirements vary.

Otaru: a canal day trip or an overnight stay?

At Otaru Canal, photograph the old warehouses by day and see gas lamps and warehouse lights reflected on the water in the evening. The canal is about ten minutes on foot from Otaru station. Decide whether to return to Sapporo by day or stay until evening, checking the return train times. Stay a night in Otaru if you want dinner without rushing. Paid canal cruises are excluded from this itinerary.

Otaru: lunch or dinner after your canal walk

Lunch near the canal or station before returning to Sapporo is a different plan from staying overnight in Otaru for dinner. On a day trip, plan your meal around restaurant opening hours and your return train. The canal path and nearby shops do not share the same opening hours.

Hakodate: meals near the station or harbour

For a seafood rice bowl or ramen near the station, consider Donburi Yokocho at Hakodate Morning Market. Hakodate City’s tourism guide introduces restaurants in the market near the JR station. Should I buy a JR pass or individual tickets?

Your JR costs depend on whether you travel only between the airport, Sapporo and Otaru, or continue to Hakodate. Add any extra JR journeys to the individual-ticket totals below before comparing pass prices.

The Hokkaido Rail Pass and the two regional passes are available to holders of valid passports issued by countries other than Japan. You need your original passport when purchasing or exchanging a pass; a residence card or passport copy cannot replace it.

An Otaru day trip from Sapporo

In four-day A, return airport JR journeys cost JPY 2,460 and the Otaru return journey costs JPY 1,600: JPY 4,060 in total. Start with this individual-ticket cost if you have no extra JR journeys. A Sapporo subway day pass does not cover JR trains to the airport or Otaru.

Continuing from Sapporo to Hakodate

Five-day B has a JR subtotal of JPY 12,600, less than the JPY 22,000 advance-purchase five-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. Reserve a seat on the Hokuto before boarding. The pass excludes subways, trams, the Hokkaido Shinkansen and South Hokkaido Railway. The Sapporo–Noboribetsu and Sapporo–Furano area passes last four consecutive days; they do not provide equivalent coverage for travel to Hakodate or the full five-day trip.

Check the season and your group’s walking needs

The outdoor botanic garden closes in winter, and maintenance or weather can suspend the ropeway. If you are travelling with parents who find long walks difficult or children who need a pram, consider the climb to the ropeway’s lower station and the stairs at Mashu-maru. Leave out difficult visits or choose another itinerary of the same length.

Considering the botanic garden in winter?

The outdoor garden is closed in winter, and the glasshouse is also currently closed. For a four-day trip, choose the Otaru Canal and Shiroi Koibito Park itinerary instead. Day 3 of the itinerary with one night in Otaru and three in Sapporo has no winter replacement for the garden. Allow extra walking and return-journey time when snow or ice remains on paths.

Travelling on a ropeway suspension day?

During maintenance from 20 October to 8 November 2026, remove the summit visit and walk from Jujigai towards the waterfront warehouses instead. Strong winds and other conditions can change operations on other dates. These itineraries exclude alternative bus or taxi journeys to the summit.

Concerned about hills or stairs?

The walk from Jujigai to the ropeway’s lower station is about ten minutes uphill. At Mashu-maru, stairs lead through the adjacent building to the boarding entrance on Level 2; there is no lift or escalator. Leave out the ship’s interior if stairs are difficult. If the climb to the lower station is difficult, assess other transport available on your date separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel around Hokkaido without a hire car?

Yes. You can explore central Sapporo, Otaru and Hakodate by JR train, subway, tram and on foot. Check transport separately for other natural areas in Hokkaido. Shiroi Koibito Park involves a walk from Miyanosawa station, and the walk to the Mt. Hakodate Ropeway’s lower station is uphill. Consider how comfortable everyone in your group is with walking.
