Where should you stay in Hokkaido?
Choose Sapporo as your base for Otaru Canal walks and a confectionery factory visit, or Hakodate for harbor scenery and night views. Sapporo and Otaru connect with New Chitose Airport; Hakodate connects with Hakodate Airport. To visit both cities, compare a 5-day/4-night trip with 2 nights in Sapporo, 2 in Hakodate, and departure from Hakodate Airport.
Would you prefer walks, views, or exhibits?
Choose Odori Park for a downtown Sapporo walk or Otaru Canal for a waterfront stroll. For views, compare Sapporo TV Tower with Hakodate's Goryokaku Tower. Shiroi Koibito Park has cookie exhibits, while Mashu-maru has exhibits aboard a former ferry. For Hakodate's night view, check both an itinerary that stays there and the ropeway's operating dates.
Choose an itinerary for your stay
Compare a Sapporo stay for Otaru Canal and cookie factory viewing with a Hakodate stay for harbor scenery and night views. A five-day itinerary combines both cities by moving your hotel from Sapporo to Hakodate. Check flight times before adding sightseeing on arrival or departure day. You need time to reach your hotel from the airport on day one, and time for airport travel, check-in, and departure procedures on the last day.
2 days, 1 night
Choose one city: A for downtown Sapporo and city views, or B for Hakodate's night view and Goryokaku. Stay one night in the city that matches your airport.
3 days, 2 nights
For a canal-focused trip, stay two nights in Sapporo and spend the middle day in Otaru. For Hakodate's night view and star-shaped fort, stay two nights in Hakodate and visit them on separate days. Add a waterfront walk on the last day only if you have enough time before airport travel.
4 days, 3 nights
Stay three nights in Sapporo and choose A for an Otaru Canal day trip or B for the botanical garden and exhibits. Both visit Shiroi Koibito Park; B requires an outdoor garden opening day.
5 days, 4 nights
For an evening by the canal, choose A with one night in Otaru and three in Sapporo. For Hakodate's night view too, choose B with two nights in each city. A requires a garden opening day; B departs from Hakodate Airport.
Where should I stay?
Near Sapporo Station
Stay near Sapporo Station if you plan to use JR trains for the airport and Otaru. This reduces the need for a subway ride before boarding a train. Routes to the ticket gates differ for accommodations north and south of the station, so check the walk before booking.

Near Otaru Station
Stay a night near Otaru Station if you want to walk around the canal in the evening without rushing for a train to Sapporo. Move your base to Sapporo the next day for city sightseeing. Plan dinner around your chosen restaurant’s hours.
Near Hakodate Station or Jujigai
Hakodate Station is a convenient base for airport buses and trams. Give separate days to harbor walks and Goryokaku. For more time near the warehouses and ropeway, consider Jujigai · 十字街. The walk to the ropeway’s lower station is uphill.

Build each day around the places you want to see
Hokkaido · 北海道. Start with what interests you most: downtown Sapporo, Otaru Canal, or Hakodate's views. Visit Miyanosawa and Otaru on separate days, and compare Hakodate as a stay that involves changing hotels.
Downtown Sapporo: Clock Tower, Odori Park, and TV Tower
Walk through Odori Park, then visit the TV Tower observation deck in the evening if you want to see the city lights. The Clock Tower is small enough to work as an exterior photo stop. For historic photos and the clock mechanism exhibits, arrive before the regular 5:00 p.m. admission cutoff. Check official notices for evening openings. If you arrive late, split the visits between your first and last days.

Near Sapporo Station: a botanical garden walk
For trees and flowers near Sapporo Station from spring through fall, visit Hokkaido University's botanical garden. It offers a different setting from the city streets or university campus. The main gate is about a 10-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station's south exit. Admission is separate from the university campus. The outdoor garden opens April 29–November 3, and the glasshouse is currently closed to visitors, so this is not a winter alternative.
Miyanosawa: cookie exhibits and gardens
If you have seen Shiroi Koibito cookies during your travels, visit their official Sapporo park to see how they are made. Factory viewing and exhibits are in the paid area; the garden and shopping areas do not require an admission ticket. Take the Tozai Line from Odori toward Miyanosawa, get off at the last stop, and walk about seven minutes. Cookie-making activities cost extra, with registration and advance-booking requirements varying by activity.

Otaru: a canal day trip or an overnight stay
Visit Otaru Canal by day for photos of the old warehouses, or in the evening for gas lamps and warehouse lights reflected in the water. The canal is about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Station. Check your return train before choosing how late to stay. For a relaxed dinner and evening walk, consider one night in Otaru. Paid canal cruises are not included in these itineraries.

Hakodate: fort views, waterfront walks, and city lights
Choose Goryokaku Tower for a view of the star-shaped fort, or Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse for a harbor walk and shopping. The lower ropeway station is uphill from the waterfront warehouses. The three-day B itinerary gives Goryokaku and the night view separate days. Omit the summit visit during the ropeway suspension, October 20–November 8, 2026.

Transportation, food, and cameras
Choose meals between that day's sightseeing stops and your hotel, rather than traveling to another city just to eat. Meals are excluded from the itinerary subtotals. Menus, prices, and last-order times vary by restaurant.
Sapporo: choose a dish and a neighborhood
Start with the dish you want: ramen, soup curry, or jingisukan grilled lamb. The Sapporo Tourism Association's listings let you search by food type and the areas around Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino. For dinner after the TV Tower, also check the subway direction back to your hotel.

Otaru: lunch or dinner after a canal walk

Hakodate: meals near the station or waterfront
For seafood rice bowls or ramen near the station, consider Donburi Yokocho in Hakodate Morning Market. The city's tourism information introduces restaurants in the market near the JR station. Should you buy a JR pass or regular tickets?
Your JR costs depend on whether you travel only to the airport and Otaru or continue to Hakodate. Add any extra JR journeys to the regular-ticket totals below before comparing pass prices.
The Hokkaido Rail Pass and the two regional passes are available to travelers with a valid passport issued outside Japan. You need your original passport for exchange or purchase; a residence card or passport copy cannot replace it.
If you take an Otaru day trip from Sapporo
Four-day A includes JPY 2,460 for round-trip airport JR travel and JPY 1,600 for round-trip Otaru travel, totaling JPY 4,060. Without additional JR journeys, start by comparing this regular-ticket cost. A Sapporo subway day pass does not cover JR trains to the airport or Otaru.

If you continue from Sapporo to Hakodate
The five-day B JR subtotal is JPY 12,600, below the JPY 22,000 advance-purchase price of a five-day Hokkaido Rail Pass. Reserve your Hokuto seat before boarding. The pass excludes the subway, trams, Hokkaido Shinkansen, and Donan Isaribi Railway. The Sapporo–Noboribetsu and Sapporo–Furano regional passes last four consecutive days; they do not provide the same coverage for travel to Hakodate or the entire five-day trip.

Check the season and your group's mobility
The outdoor botanical garden closes in winter, and maintenance or weather may stop the ropeway. If you are traveling with someone who finds long walks difficult or a child who needs a stroller, check the uphill walk to the lower ropeway station and the stairs at Mashu-maru. Omit difficult stops or choose another itinerary of the same length.
Planning a botanical garden visit in winter?
The outdoor garden is closed in winter, and the glasshouse is also currently closed to visitors. For a four-day trip, choose Otaru Canal and Shiroi Koibito Park instead. Day three of the one-night Otaru, three-night Sapporo itinerary has no winter replacement for the garden. Allow extra walking and return time where snow or ice remains.
If the ropeway is not running
During the October 20–November 8, 2026, maintenance closure, omit the summit visit and walk from Jujigai toward the waterfront warehouses instead. Strong winds and other conditions can affect service on other dates too. These itineraries do not include a substitute summit trip by bus or taxi.

If hills or stairs are difficult
The lower ropeway station is about a 10-minute uphill walk from Jujigai. Mashu-maru requires stairs to the second-floor boarding entrance, with no elevators or escalators. If stairs are difficult, omit the onboard exhibits. If the uphill walk is difficult, separately check alternative transportation available on your travel date.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit Hokkaido without renting a car?
Yes. You can explore central Sapporo, Otaru, and Hakodate using JR trains, the subway, trams, and walking. For other natural areas in Hokkaido, check transportation to each destination separately. Shiroi Koibito Park involves a walk from Miyanosawa Station, and the lower Mt. Hakodate Ropeway station requires an uphill walk, so consider your group's walking comfort.
