History and local traditions

Gion Matsuri traces its origins to a ritual held in 869 to ward off epidemics. Neighbourhood communities developed the float traditions over subsequent centuries.

Plan your visit

Choose Yoiyama for stationary float decorations, or a procession to watch the floats move and turn. The two July processions have different routes; use the route map for the day you attend.
