Should you choose the garden or historic districts for two days in Kanazawa?

Choose Omicho Market and Kenrokuen for a seafood lunch and garden walk. For teahouse buildings and samurai-district lanes, choose Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi. Stay one night near Kanazawa Station and spread visits over two days. On the final day, allow time after the return bus before your next train. Airport travel and procedures need separate time.

Market and garden

Spend two days with a seafood lunch and a garden walk. Explore Omicho Market on day one, then walk among Kenrokuen’s ponds and trees on day two.

Day 1: Omicho Market and a Kanazawa stay

Choose a seafood lunch at Omicho Market on arrival, then browse fish, vegetable and fruit stalls. Afterwards, stay near Kanazawa Station.

  1. Kanazawa Station east plaza → Omicho Market on foot or by left loop bus

Walk about 12 minutes from Kanazawa Station’s east plaza to Omicho Market. Alternatively, take the left loop bus from east-side stand 7 to Musashigatsuji/Omicho Market, in front of Ichibakan. The adult one-way fare is JPY 220; add bus fares to the walking-return cost basis below if taking the bus.

  2. Omicho Market → Open restaurants and market shops

The market’s general hours are around 09:00–16:00, but individual restaurants and shops differ. Have lunch at an open restaurant and browse in the afternoon. Meals and shopping cost extra. More shops tend to close on Wednesdays.

  3. Omicho Market, in front of M’za Kuromon Koji → Kanazawa Station → nearby hotel

Retrace your walk to the station’s east plaza, or take the station-bound right loop bus from Musashigatsuji/Omicho Market in front of M’za Kuromon Koji. The right loop has several stops around the market; distinguish this from the left loop stop where you arrived. Choose an open restaurant near the station for dinner.

Market shops have different opening days and closing times. If arriving late, have dinner near the station. You can visit the market the next day, but then rearrange Kenrokuen and your station departure too. Market transport costs JPY 0 if walking both ways, or JPY 440 for an adult taking one left loop and one right loop ride. Meals and accommodation are excluded.

Day 2: Kenrokuen and the return to the city

Take a bus to Kenrokuen and walk the paths linking ponds and pavilions. On your final day, fit the visit and both bus journeys around your onward train. If staying longer, return to your hotel near Kanazawa Station afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How should I shorten the Kenrokuen route for an early day-two train?

This route visits the market on day one and Kenrokuen on day two. Compare access by bus or on foot, visiting time and the station return with your next train before deciding to go. If there is insufficient time for the return, omit the garden and stay near the station. Hours are 07:00–18:00 through 15 October and 08:00–17:00 from 16 October, with last admission at 17:30 and 16:30 respectively. For a morning visit, check the date’s garden opening time and buses together.

Is the bus day pass cheaper for three rides?

Three general adult fares total JPY 660, below the JPY 800 day pass. For four or more rides in one day, compare the pass’s covered routes. Buying a pass each day costs more for an itinerary with two rides on each of two days.
