Where should you stay and what should you see in Ishikawa?

In Kanazawa, walk among Kenrokuen’s ponds and trees and choose a seafood lunch at Omicho Market. Explore Higashi Chaya’s traditional teahouse buildings and Nagamachi’s earthen walls and stone lanes too. Garden, historic districts or hot springs?

For a garden walk, explore Kenrokuen’s ponds and trees. Choose Omicho Market for a seafood lunch and browsing. Higashi Chaya’s teahouse buildings and Nagamachi’s earthen walls and stone lanes offer different historic streetscapes. For hot spring rest and riverside walking, stay in Yamanaka and explore a nearby section of Kakusenkei.

Itineraries by trip length

Decide whether to stay in Kanazawa throughout or move to Yamanaka Onsen after sightseeing. City courses divide the market, garden and historic districts; hot spring courses connect trains with hotel transfers. Check your booked hotel plan for included meals.

1 night, 2 days

Stay one night in Kanazawa for the market and garden or separate days in Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi. Reduce day-two sightseeing for an early onward train.

2 nights, 3 days

Stay two nights in Kanazawa to spread the market, garden and historic districts over three days. For a hot spring night too, split your stay into one night each in Kanazawa and Yamanaka. Choose a return-day Higashi Chaya visit only if it fits your onward departure.

3 nights, 4 days

For the garden, Nagamachi and hot spring rest, stay two nights in Kanazawa and one at the hot springs. For an extra hotel day and a nearby riverside walk, choose one Kanazawa night and two hot spring nights.

4 nights, 5 days

Two nights each in Kanazawa and the hot springs leave a day to rest after city sightseeing. For a separate Higashi Chaya day, choose three Kanazawa nights and one hot spring night. Coordinate the final day’s return train with your onward departure.

Where should you stay?

Around Kanazawa Station

Consider staying near Kanazawa Station if trains to Kaga Onsen and your onward departure are priorities. Allow separate bus and walking time for the garden and historic streets.

Before travelling or booking

Check timetables and closing days for your dates

Use IR local trains between Kanazawa and Kagaonsen. Choose both journeys from the official IR timetable and coordinate arrival/platform access with your reserved hotel transfer. Reserve Ohanami Kyubei’s transfer separately by the previous day. The official return-transfer request window is from check-in until breakfast the next morning; for two nights, confirm the actual check-out date’s service and booking deadline at check-in. Kenrokuen changes hours from 16 October.

Distinguish IR local trains from rail pass coverage

Hot spring course railway subtotals use ordinary Kanazawa–Kagaonsen IR tickets at JPY 880 one way or JPY 1,760 return. The Hokuriku, Hokuriku Arch and Kansai–Hokuriku passes allow exceptional IR use only between Kanazawa and Tsubata when passing through without alighting at other IR stations. That exception does not apply to this course, which alights at Kagaonsen. If switching to Shinkansen, recheck each pass’s covered sections and seat conditions, travel-date trains and hotel transfer connections. Hot spring buses and facility admissions need separate checks too. Choose a pass after comparing your starting city and other journeys together.

From Kanazawa Station to sights and hot springs

Loop bus stops sharing a name can have different locations by direction. The hot springs require a train and onward transport, rather than a city bus journey.

Kenrokuen: east-side stand 7 → right loop RL6

Take the right loop from Kanazawa Station east-side stand 7 to Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa Castle RL6, opposite Ishikawa Gate. Walk about five minutes to Katsurazaka entrance. The right loop return also passes Korinbo and Omicho Market. Allow separate time for bus waits and walking to the garden.

Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi: distinguish outward and return stops

For Higashi Chaya, take the right loop to Hashibacho in front of Kinjohro, then walk about five minutes. The same loop returns via the garden, Korinbo and market, so it takes longer. For Nagamachi, take the left loop to Korinbo in front of Atrio and walk about five minutes; return from the station-bound right loop stop in front of the former Bank of Japan.

Yamanaka Onsen: IR train → hot spring bus or hotel transfer

Take an IR local train from Kanazawa to Kagaonsen Station, then a Yamanaka Onsen-bound scheduled bus or reserved hotel transfer. For Ohanami Kyubei, reserve the transfer separately by the previous day and board at the designated station south-side location. For another hotel, check its boarding area and reservation deadline. Market seafood or Jibuni?

On your Omicho day, time meals around lunch opening hours. For Nagamachi, choose a restaurant in Korinbo or Katamachi. If you have reserved a hotel transfer, fit city meals around its departure too.

Meals at Omicho Market

Browse the market and choose a seafood dish. Check the menu for fish varieties, cooked or raw preparation, prices and hours. General market hours do not mean every restaurant serves dinner.

Jibuni: a thickened meat and vegetable stew

Jibuni is an Ishikawa dish of duck or chicken and vegetables simmered in stock. Flour coating the meat thickens the broth; it may be served with wasabi. Look for Jibuni on the menu for a local option beyond seafood. Confirm ingredients and preparation with the restaurant.
