Where should I stay and what should I see in Ishikawa?

Walk among ponds and trees at Kenrokuen, and choose a seafood lunch at Omicho Market. Explore Higashi Chaya’s traditional teahouses and Nagamachi’s earthen walls and stone lanes. To rest at an onsen hotel, take a train to Kaga Onsen, then a Yamanaka-bound bus or booked hotel pickup.

Garden, historic districts or onsen?

Choose Kenrokuen for walks among ponds and trees, or Omicho for seafood lunch and browsing. Higashi Chaya’s teahouses and Nagamachi’s earthen walls/stone lanes offer different streetscapes. For onsen rest and riverside walks, stay in Yamanaka and explore a nearby Kakusenkei section.

Itineraries by trip length

First choose whether to stay in Kanazawa throughout or move to Yamanaka after sightseeing. City courses split market, garden and historic districts; onsen courses coordinate trains and hotel pickup. Check whether meals are included in your chosen hotel plan.

2 days / 1 night

Spend one Kanazawa night for market/garden visits or separate Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi days. Shorten Day 2 sightseeing if the next train leaves early.

3 days / 2 nights

Stay two Kanazawa nights to give market, garden and historic districts time. For onsen rest too, stay one night each in Kanazawa and Yamanaka. Add Higashi Chaya on the return day only if it fits your onward departure.

4 days / 3 nights

Split three nights into two in Kanazawa and one at the onsen for garden/Nagamachi and rest. For an extra onsen rest day and nearby riverside walks, choose one Kanazawa night and two onsen nights.

5 days / 4 nights

Two nights each in Kanazawa and the onsen give you a rest day after city sightseeing. For a separate Higashi Chaya day, choose three Kanazawa nights and one onsen night. Match the final-day onsen return train with your onward departure.

Before travel and booking

Check timetables and closures for your travel dates

Travel between Kanazawa and Kaga Onsen by IR local train. Choose returns in official IR timetables, allowing arrival/platform walking time before booked hotel pickup. Book Ohanami Kyubei pickup separately by the previous day. Official hotel guidance accepts return bookings from check-in until breakfast the next morning. For two nights, confirm the actual check-out-day service and deadline at check-in. Kenrokuen hours change from 16 October.

Distinguish IR local trains from rail-pass coverage

Onsen course rail subtotals use ordinary Kanazawa–Kaga Onsen IR tickets at 880 yen one way or 1,760 return. The IR exception for the Hokuriku, Hokuriku Arch and Kansai–Hokuriku passes covers passing between Kanazawa and Tsubata without getting off at other IR stations. It therefore does not apply to this course getting off at Kaga Onsen. If switching to Shinkansen, recheck each pass’s coverage and seat conditions, travel-date trains and hotel pickup connections. Onsen buses and admission also need separate checks. Compare passes against your departure city and other journeys.

Market seafood or jibuni?

Plan Omicho meals around lunch opening hours. On Nagamachi day, choose a restaurant in Korinbo or Katamachi. If you have booked hotel pickup, time city meals around that departure too.

Eating at Omicho Market

Browse seafood menus while exploring the market. Check fish ingredients, cooked versus raw dishes, prices and hours on shop menus. General market hours do not establish evening opening for individual restaurants.
