Where should you stay and what should you see in Ishikawa?
In Kanazawa, walk among Kenrokuen's ponds and trees, then choose a seafood lunch at Omicho Market. Explore Higashi Chaya's traditional teahouse buildings and Nagamachi's earthen walls and stone lanes. For a restful onsen stay, take a train to Kagaonsen Station and change to a Yamanaka-bound bus or a booked hotel shuttle.
Garden, historic districts or onsen: what appeals to you?
For a garden walk, explore Kenrokuen's ponds and trees. Omicho Market suits a seafood lunch and market browsing. Higashi Chaya's teahouse buildings and Nagamachi's earthen walls and stone lanes offer different historic streetscapes. To rest at an onsen and walk beside the river, stay in Yamanaka and explore a nearby section of Kakusenkei.
Itineraries by trip length
First decide whether to stay in Kanazawa throughout or move to Yamanaka Onsen after sightseeing. City itineraries spread out the market, garden and historic districts; onsen itineraries connect trains with hotel shuttles. Check your hotel's accommodation plan to see whether meals are included.
2 days / 1 night
Stay one night in Kanazawa for the market and garden, or visit Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi on separate days. Shorten day-two sightseeing if your next train leaves early.
3 days / 2 nights
For the market, garden and both historic districts, stay two nights in Kanazawa. To add an onsen stay, spend one night each in Kanazawa and Yamanaka. Choose an optional Higashi Chaya visit on your return day only if it fits your next departure.
4 days / 3 nights
For the garden, Nagamachi and an onsen break, spend two nights in Kanazawa and one at the onsen. For an extra day resting at the hotel and a short riverside walk, choose one city night and two onsen nights.
5 days / 4 nights
Two nights each in Kanazawa and at the onsen leave a day to rest after city sightseeing. For a separate day in Higashi Chaya, spend three city nights and one onsen night. Match the final day's return train with your next departure.
Where to stay
Around Kanazawa Station
Consider the Kanazawa Station area if trains to Kaga Onsen and your onward departure are the priority. Allow separate bus and walking time to the garden and historic districts.

Before booking and travelling
Check timetables and closures for your travel date
Use IR ordinary trains between Kanazawa and Kagaonsen Station. Choose outward and return services from IR's official timetable, allowing for arrival and movement between platforms when connecting with your booked hotel shuttle. Ohanami Kyubei's shuttle must be booked separately by the day before. Its official guide allows return requests from check-in until breakfast the next morning. For a two-night stay, confirm your actual check-out date's shuttle and booking deadline at check-in. Kenrokuen's hours change on 16 October.

Distinguish IR ordinary trains from rail-pass coverage
The onsen itineraries budget regular IR ordinary-train tickets between Kanazawa and Kagaonsen at JPY 880 one way or JPY 1,760 return. The Hokuriku Area Pass, Hokuriku Arch Pass and Kansai–Hokuriku Area Pass allow exceptional use of IR between Kanazawa and Tsubata only when passing through without getting off at other IR stations. This exception does not cover an itinerary alighting at Kagaonsen. If switching to the Shinkansen, recheck each pass's valid sections and seating conditions, trains for your travel date and the hotel shuttle connection. Check onsen bus fares and facility admission separately. Compare passes against your starting city and other journeys before choosing.

Market seafood or jibuni: what would you like to eat?
Time your Omicho Market visit around lunch service. On the day you walk through Nagamachi, choose a restaurant in Korinbo or Katamachi. If you have booked a hotel shuttle, plan city meal times around its departure.
Eating at Omicho Market
Browse the market and choose a seafood dish. Check the menu for the fish used, whether it is cooked or served as sashimi, the price and opening hours. The market's general hours do not establish evening service at individual restaurants.
Jibuni: a thickened meat and vegetable stew
Jibuni is an Ishikawa dish of duck or chicken and vegetables simmered in stock. Flour coating the meat thickens the broth, and it may be served with wasabi. Look for jibuni on the menu if you want a local dish beyond seafood. Check ingredients and serving style with the restaurant.
