For two Kumamoto nights, should I spend the middle day in the city or Aso?
For unhurried city viewing, give the castle, museum and garden a day each. For grasslands, compare a middle-day JR trip to Aso with a change to a Kusasenri bus. Match trains, buses and the return for your date.

Frequently asked questions
How should I calculate transport costs for an Aso day trip?
The 3,600-yen subtotal includes only verified admission, Aso buses and city trams. Required Kumamoto–Aso return JR travel costs extra. Use the official JR search for fares by actual date, train and seat, then add them.
Can I board a Kusasenri bus immediately on reaching Aso Station?
Leave the JR train, go through the station exit and walk to the Aso-ekimae bus boarding point. The Aso mountain bus is first come, first served without reservations, so train arrival alone does not guarantee boarding. Choose both bus directions and return JR together, leaving time for a later bus if one is full or delayed.
