Stay two nights at the same accommodation around Torichosuji, giving the castle, museum and garden a day each. Choose this for city sightseeing without changing accommodation. On the final day, return from the garden to Kumamoto Station by tram.

Day one

Visit the castle and keep.

  1. Kumamoto Station → Kumamoto Castle

    From Kumamoto-Ekimae, take an A-line tram towards Kengunmachi and get off at Kumamoto Castle/City Hall. Walk through Josaien to the southern admission entrance. Only the south entrance is available on weekdays; follow construction notices for northern access on weekends and public holidays.

  2. Kumamoto Castle → Torichosuji dinner and city accommodation

    After visiting the castle and keep, rest at Josaien and walk to Torichosuji for dinner. Stay around Torichosuji tonight. Wakuwakuza is outside the basic itinerary.

Day two

See the museum's permanent exhibition, then rest in town.

  1. Torichosuji accommodation → Sakuramachi terminal

    Walk from your Torichosuji accommodation to Sakuramachi terminal. Check the walking route for your actual address, then continue along the route to the museum.

    Walk about 15 minutes from the terminal to the museum's northern entrance and view the permanent exhibition. Adult admission is JPY 400; the planetarium costs extra.

  3. City museum permanent exhibition → Torichosuji meal and rest

    Return by the same route to Sakuramachi for lunch, then your Torichosuji accommodation. If the museum is closed, swap it with the following day's garden visit and recheck transport and departure connections.

Day three

Walk through the garden, then return.

  1. Torichosuji accommodation → Garden visiting area

    Take a Kengunmachi-bound tram to Suizenji-Koen and walk about five minutes to the main entrance. Explore the pond and paths.

  2. Garden visiting area → Kumamoto Station and departure

    From Suizenji-Koen, take an A-line tram towards Tasakibashi, get off at Kumamoto-Ekimae and depart.

If the museum is closed, swap day two with the garden visit. Return to Kumamoto Station after final-day sightseeing.

From the castle to Aso's grassland

Stay two nights around Torichosuji and visit Aso's grassland the day after the castle. Take JR and buses there and back on day two, returning to the same accommodation. Visit the art museum after 10:00 on the final day before departing. Choose return trains and buses for Aso and your final departure first.

Day two

Spend the middle day walking through Aso's grassland.

  1. Torichosuji → Aso Station

    Take an A-line tram towards Tasakibashi from Torichosuji to Kumamoto-Ekimae. Travel to Aso Station on the JR Hohi Main Line by direct limited express or local trains changing at Higo-Ozu. Choose a train connecting with a morning Kusasenri bus.

  2. Outside Aso Station → Kusasenri grassland

    Leave the station and take an Aso Sanjo Terminal-bound bus from Aso-Ekimae. Get off at Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum, walk to the grassland, explore and have lunch. Horse riding, the museum and crater shuttle are optional extras.

  3. Kusasenri grassland → Kumamoto Station

    After walking, return to the Aso-Ekimae-bound boarding point at Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum. Take the bus and change to JR at Aso Station for Kumamoto. Allow time to walk from the bus to the train and wait; do not rely solely on the last bus.

  4. Kumamoto Station → Torichosuji dinner and city accommodation

    Take an A-line tram towards Kengunmachi from Kumamoto-Ekimae to Torichosuji. Have dinner and walk back to the same accommodation.

The Aso mountain bus takes passengers without reservations on a first-come basis. Choose outward and return services from the official timetable, allowing time for JR connections. If a full or delayed bus means taking a later service, adjust grassland time and the journey back to Kumamoto together.

Day three

Explore free art spaces in the city before departing.

  1. Torichosuji stop → Free areas of the contemporary art museum

    Walk about one minute from Torichosuji stop to BIPRES Kumanichi Hall and go to the contemporary art museum on Level 3. Explore available free spaces after the 10:00 opening. Follow same-day restrictions for the Home Gallery and free areas; paid special exhibitions are optional extras.

How should I calculate transport for an Aso day trip?

JPY 3,600 includes only confirmed admission, Aso buses and city trams. Essential Kumamoto–Aso return JR travel costs extra. Look up the actual date, train and seat with JR's official search and add the fare.

Can I board the Kusasenri bus immediately after arriving at Aso?

Leave the train, pass through the station exit and reach the Aso-Ekimae bus boarding point. The mountain bus is unreserved and first-come, so train arrival does not guarantee boarding. Choose return buses and JR together, allowing time for a later bus if full or delayed.
