Three nights in Kumamoto: one base or a night at the onsen?

For one base, spend three city nights and give the castle, garden, Aso and museum separate days. For a ryokan night, compare one city night, one Kurokawa night and another city night. Add the museum on the return day only with an early reserved bus and an opening day that fits.

The garden and Aso from one accommodation base

Stay three nights at the same accommodation around Torichosuji, giving the castle, garden, Aso and museum a day each. Visit Kumamoto Station both ways on the Aso day while keeping the same accommodation. Choose this only with time to visit the museum before your final-day departure.

Compare Kagoshima sand bathing and shrine visits

For sand bathing or shrines instead of grassland and onsen ryokans, compare Kagoshima's three-night options. Reallocate nights by region rather than adding both full itineraries to the same dates. Compare ordinary tickets with designated Southern and All Kyushu coverage for Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo Shinkansen; Northern Kyushu excludes it. Station access, local trams, ferries and buses, hire cars and changed accommodation cost extra separately. Check dated return trains and accommodation access first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reach Kurokawa Onsen without a car?

Reserve the Kyushu Odan Bus from two months before travel until the previous day. The adult fare from Kumamoto-Ekimae or Sakuramachi to Kurokawa is JPY 3,400 one way. Choose departures for your date from the official return timetable and reserve return seats. Arrange ryokan pickup and subsequent city travel separately.

Is a Northern Kyushu pass cheaper for an Aso trip?

An Aso trip alone does not establish that a Northern Kyushu pass is cheaper. With other JR journeys, compare actual ordinary-ticket totals against pass prices, coverage and eligibility. Trams, Aso buses, Kurokawa reserved buses, admission and bathing passes cost extra.
