Ordinary tickets or Southern Kyushu Pass for an Ibusuki return?
For a single Kagoshima-Chuo–Ibusuki local-train return as in three-night itinerary A, ordinary adult tickets cost JPY 1,170 one way or JPY 2,340 return. The Southern three-day pass costs JPY 12,000 through overseas agents or specified JR Kyushu counters, so ordinary tickets are cheaper for this journey alone. If choosing Ibusuki no Tamatebako, check limited-express charges and seat reservations separately.
JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking's Southern three-day pass had a limited price of JPY 11,000 as checked on 9 October 2026. Official online purchases still require collection at a specified counter with every user's original passport, the physical credit card used to pay and the QR exchange voucher. Overseas-agent vouchers require original passports and the voucher at a specified counter. Direct purchases at specified Japanese counters also require users' original passports.
The Southern pass is for residents outside Japan holding non-Japanese passports and entering for tourism with Temporary Visitor status. Validity is three consecutive days. If adding JR travel such as Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo Shinkansen on other days, compare ordinary fares for actual dates, trains and seats with pass prices by purchase method and covered segments. Do not apply the Ibusuki-only comparison unchanged to other trips. City buses, trams, ferries and sand bathing are separate.

Frequently asked questions
Can you reach Kirishima Jingu using only JR?
No. After Kirishima-Jingu Station, you need a bus to the shrine. The ordinary route and separate access bus have different operating days and return times; the access bus uses a specified one-day ticket. Check the bus back to the station after worship. The overnight itineraries above use a hire car between the shrine, park and accommodation.

Is the Southern Kyushu Pass cheaper for an Ibusuki return alone?
No. Ordinary adult tickets at JPY 2,340 are cheaper for only a Kagoshima-Chuo–Ibusuki local-train return. The Southern three-consecutive-day pass costs JPY 12,000 through overseas agents or specified JR Kyushu counters. Its official online limited price was JPY 11,000 as checked on 9 October 2026.
