With three nights in Kagoshima, should you keep your city hotel or move to Kirishima?
To avoid changing city hotels, choose separate Sakurajima and Ibusuki day trips. For red shrine architecture and a mountain park, compare two city nights followed by a rental-car overnight stay in Kirishima. Get a vehicle quote for your pickup and return dates and times, vehicle class, and coverage; add fuel and hotel parking to the rental price.

Ordinary tickets or the Southern Kyushu pass for an Ibusuki round trip?
For one ordinary-train round trip between Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki, as in three-night itinerary A, adult ordinary tickets cost ¥1,170 one way or ¥2,340 round trip. The Southern Kyushu 3-day pass costs ¥12,000 through overseas travel agencies or designated JR Kyushu counters, so ordinary tickets are cheaper for this round trip alone. If choosing the Ibusuki no Tamatebako sightseeing limited express, check the limited express charge and seat reservation separately.
As checked October 9, 2026, JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking lists a limited price of ¥11,000 for the Southern Kyushu 3-day pass. Official online purchases must still be collected at a designated counter, with every user’s original passport, the physical credit card used to pay, and the QR exchange voucher. For an overseas travel agency exchange voucher, present original passports and the voucher at a designated counter. Direct purchases at designated counters in Japan also require each user’s original passport.
The Southern Kyushu pass is for overseas residents with a passport from a country other than Japan who enter for sightseeing with Temporary Visitor status. Validity is three consecutive days. If adding JR travel on other dates, such as the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo Shinkansen, compare ordinary ticket totals for the actual dates, trains, and seats with the pass price for your purchase method and its covered sections. Do not apply the Ibusuki-only comparison unchanged to other itineraries. City buses, trams, ferries, and sand bathing cost extra.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get to Kirishima Jingu Shrine by JR alone?
After getting off at Kirishima-Jingu Station, you need a bus to the shrine. The ordinary route and separate access bus have different operating days and return times; the access bus requires its designated day ticket. Check a bus back to the station after your shrine visit too. The overnight itineraries above use a rental car between the shrine, park, and accommodation.
