For three nights in Kagoshima, should I keep a city base or move to Kirishima?

To keep the same city hotel, choose separate Sakurajima and Ibusuki day trips. For red shrine buildings and a mountain park, compare two city nights followed by a rental-car overnight trip to Kirishima. Request a quote for your collection and return dates and times, vehicle type and insurance cover. Add fuel and hotel parking to the rental fee when budgeting.

Should I choose ordinary tickets or a Southern Kyushu Pass for Ibusuki?

For one local-train return between Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki, as in three-night itinerary A, adult ordinary tickets cost 1,170 yen each way or 2,340 yen return. A three-day Southern Kyushu Pass costs 12,000 yen through overseas travel agencies or designated JR Kyushu counters, so ordinary tickets are cheaper for this return alone. For Ibusuki no Tamatebako, check the separate limited-express supplement and seat reservation.

JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking lists a limited three-day Southern Kyushu price of 11,000 yen, checked 9 October 2026. Online purchases still require collection at a designated counter, with every traveller’s original passport, the physical credit card used for payment and the QR exchange voucher. For overseas-agency vouchers, present the original passport and voucher at a designated counter. Direct purchases at designated Japanese counters also require travellers’ original passports.

The Southern Kyushu Pass is for overseas residents holding passports from countries other than Japan who enter for tourism with Temporary Visitor status. It is valid for three consecutive days. If adding JR journeys on other dates, such as the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo shinkansen, compare ordinary fares for the actual dates, trains and seats against pass prices by purchase method and coverage. Do not apply an Ibusuki-only comparison to other itineraries. City buses, trams, ferries and sand bathing cost extra.
