Where should you stay and what should you see in Kagoshima?
Kagoshima-Chuo Station is a useful base for JR day trips to Ibusuki. Compare Tenmonkan for city meals and shopping. To return to city accommodation after Sakurajima, choose island-bus and ferry return services together. For Ibusuki or Kirishima stays, decide your local nights and city return day first to help select the next day's transport.
Gardens, volcanic scenery or sand bathing first?
Choose Sengan-en for gardens and a former residence with Sakurajima behind them, or Shiroyama for elevated city and bay views. See volcanic landforms differently through visitor centre exhibitions and Yunohira Observatory. The aquarium offers marine life, while Ibusuki offers sand bathing and rest. For red shrine architecture and a mountain park, compare Kirishima stays.
Itineraries by trip length
First choose day trips from the same city accommodation or overnight stays in Ibusuki or Kirishima. These itineraries use buses and trams in the city, ferries and island buses for Sakurajima, JR for Ibusuki and hire cars for Kirishima stays.
2 days / 1 night
Visit Sengan-en and Shiroyama on separate days, or Sakurajima first and the aquarium the next day. The island itinerary requires sightseeing from the first morning.
3 days / 2 nights
Choose Sakurajima or Ibusuki sand bathing for your middle day. Both itineraries spend two nights in the city.
4 days / 3 nights
Spend three city nights with Sakurajima and Ibusuki day trips, or two city nights followed by one in Kirishima. A Kumamoto Castle day trip is a separate choice replacing one sightseeing day.
5 days / 4 nights
Compare one Ibusuki night after sand bathing with two Kirishima nights. For a Kumamoto night, move one of your Kagoshima nights and allocate dates separately.
Where should you stay?

Kirishima
Compare Kirishima stays for more time with red shrine architecture and mountain parks. A bus connects Kirishima-Jingu Station to the shrine; the overnight itineraries linking the shrine, park and mountain accommodation use a hire car.
Before arranging transport and bookings
What should you add beyond the displayed subtotal?
These checked items apply to one adult choosing the visits listed in each itinerary. Add accommodation, meals and exclusions separately to each subtotal.
City View costs JPY 230 per adult ride; a city one-day pass for covered municipal routes costs JPY 700. Compare using your actual ride count. The city pass excludes ferries, Sakurajima Island View buses and JR. Saraku's JPY 1,500 basic package excludes towels; choosing the JPY 1,800 towel package adds JPY 300 to the relevant itinerary. Confirm Kirishima driving costs against your hire contract.
How should you separate trams, City View and JR passes?
City trams cost JPY 200 per adult or JPY 100 per child.
City View costs JPY 230 per adult ride or JPY 120 per child. The municipal tram, municipal bus and City View one-day pass costs JPY 700 per adult or JPY 350 per child and uses a calendar day. This differs from the 24-hour pass at JPY 900 per adult or JPY 450 per child. Do not include private buses, JR, ferries or Sakurajima Island View in the same pass.
Compare covered JR segments on the Southern or All Kyushu Rail Pass. City View, trams, ferries, Island View, sand bathing and Kirishima buses are outside JR pass coverage. For travel to Kagoshima, distinguish this from Northern Kyushu coverage when choosing a pass.
The loop runs from Kagoshima-Chuo east stand 4 through the city and Shiroyama, then Sengan-en, the aquarium and pier area, the city and Chuo Station. Buses do not wait while you sightsee; choose a later service after each visit. Check service changes and stop times.

How should you connect the Sakurajima ferry and island bus?
The ferry from Kagoshima Port's Sakurajima pier to Sakurajima Port takes about 15 minutes and costs JPY 250 per adult one way or JPY 500 return. Vehicle fares are excluded. Follow Sakurajima Port guidance for payment location. To reach the pier, get off City View at Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae (Sakurajima Sanbashi) and walk about one minute.
Sakurajima Island View costs JPY 230 per adult ride or JPY 120 per child. Its dedicated one-day pass costs JPY 500 per adult or JPY 250 per child. Do not use a full-loop duration to time your return; check each stop's departure on the operator's timetable link for your date. This western sightseeing loop does not connect the whole eastern island. Time spent at attractions and waiting for the next bus is extra to the loop's running time.
Check the outward port departure and Yunohira return service together. Confirm the timetable applies to your date and weekday, and choose a return you can reach after sightseeing and walking to the stop. Observatory entries are departures, not arrivals or an allowance for sightseeing. The visitor centre's 17:00 closing does not mean you can wait until 17:00 for the return bus.
If seeing the displays first, distinguish walking from the port to the visitor centre and boarding there from walking back to the port to board. Leave time after sightseeing to reach the stop. The ferry connection at the port takes additional time.
After the island bus returns to Sakurajima Port, board the return ferry on terminal Level 3 and pay at Sakurajima Port. Disembark on Level 2 at Kagoshima Port. The crossing of about 15 minutes, or about 20 in some weather, and the 2–3 minutes to disembark after docking are separate from bus connection time. Leave the terminal and confirm the daytime City View boarding location at Kagoshima Suizokukan-mae (Sakurajima Sanbashi). The return runs via Waterfront Park, Kinseicho and Tenmonkan to Chuo Station's terminus. Choose your return bus using your date's stop times and operation notices.

What should you check before visiting Sakurajima?
Check volcanic information and road, bus and ferry notices separately for your visit date. Do not judge observatory access or transport operation from the alert level alone, and avoid prohibited areas.

How should you time Ibusuki trains and sand-bath reception?
Choose local-train return services using the official date-specific searches for Kagoshima-Chuo and Ibusuki stations. Saraku is about 20 minutes' walk from Ibusuki Station; allow reception, changing, bathing and the return walk. Sand-bath reception pauses 12:00–13:00 on weekdays, so time your visit accordingly.
The ordinary adult fare is JPY 1,170 one way or JPY 2,340 return. Ibusuki no Tamatebako sightseeing limited-express trains have reserved seating throughout, with separate limited-express charges and reservations. Check your date's operating calendar and seats if choosing it. Four-night itinerary A stays in Ibusuki, so outward and return JR journeys occur on different days and accommodation access costs extra.

What should you check when using buses to Kirishima Jingu?
Kirishima-Jingu Station is not in front of the shrine. Choose outward and return services for your date separately on the ordinary route or separate access bus. The access bus requires a specified one-day ticket, JPY 1,500 per adult or JPY 750 per primary school child, distinct from cash or IC travel on ordinary routes. JR fares and accommodation access are extra.
The one- and two-night Kirishima itineraries above use a hire car between the shrine, mountain park and accommodation. To change to buses, start with a shrine-only visit and rearrange outward, return and accommodation access.
Kirishima ordinary-route timetable from 1 April 2026Kirishima access-bus timetable from 1 April 2026
How should you divide regions and meal times?
For kurobuta pork or shirokuma after city sightseeing, compare Tenmonkan shops and accommodation locations together. Menus, prices and hours vary by shop. In Ibusuki, you could use the weekday 12:00–13:00 sand-bath reception pause for lunch and rest. Check nearby restaurant opening separately. For Kirishima stays, first confirm whether dinner is included and your accommodation's arrival deadline.
Sakurajima's western loop is an option for the visitor centre and observatory. To explore the entire island or travel to others such as Yakushima or Amami, arrange transport and nights separately.

What can you learn from the aquarium camera?
Cameras provide views for reference. Footage alone does not establish visitor access, transport operation, volcanic restrictions or facility opening; check official operation guidance.
The aquarium's official live-camera page describes footage of the Kuroshio large tank. Broadcast hours are listed as 09:00–18:00; open the stream to check whether it is currently running. Aquarium footage cannot establish Sakurajima's road or volcanic conditions.
How should you compare an Ibusuki day trip, nearby stays and JR passes?
For sand bathing followed by a return to the same city accommodation, compare two-night itinerary B or three-night itinerary A. Four-night itinerary A proposes two city nights, one in Ibusuki and one back in the city. JR Ibusuki Station is about 20 minutes' walk from Saraku; accommodation access and the return-day train are separate. Kirishima gets one night in three-night B and two in four-night B, visiting the shrine and park. Both Kirishima overnight itineraries assume a hire car; an ordinary bus timetable alone does not establish the same accommodation moves.
For a single Kagoshima-Chuo–Ibusuki local-train return trip as in three-night A, ordinary adult tickets cost JPY 1,170 one way or JPY 2,340 return. The Southern Kyushu three-day pass costs JPY 12,000 through overseas agents or specified JR Kyushu counters, so ordinary tickets are cheaper for this return alone. If choosing Ibusuki no Tamatebako, check limited-express charges and seat reservations separately.
JR KYUSHU RAIL PASS Online Booking's Southern Kyushu three-day pass had a limited price of JPY 11,000 when checked on 9 October 2026. Official online purchases still require collection at a specified counter, with every user's original passport, the physical credit card used to pay and the QR exchange voucher. For an overseas-agent exchange voucher, present original passports and the voucher at a specified counter. Direct purchases at specified Japanese counters also require users' original passports.
The Southern Kyushu Pass is for residents outside Japan holding non-Japanese passports who enter for tourism with Temporary Visitor status. It lasts three consecutive days. If adding JR journeys on other days, such as the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo Shinkansen, compare ordinary fares for your actual dates, trains and seats with pass prices by purchase method and covered segments. Do not apply the Ibusuki-only comparison unchanged to other trips. City buses, trams, ferries and sand bathing are extra.
The All Kyushu adult pass costs JPY 22,000 for three days, JPY 24,000 for five or JPY 26,000 for seven; official online prices may differ. Southern Kyushu Shinkansen coverage is Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo, not the whole route to Hakata. Island View and Kirishima buses are separate from JR passes. Four-night A's JR journeys occur on days three and four, so match your pass start date to the actual trains.

Would you like to compare Kumamoto and Kagoshima instead?
Kumamoto's Aso and Kurokawa differ from Kagoshima's Ibusuki and Kirishima in purpose and transport. Compare Kumamoto's three- or four-night itineraries for grasslands or ryokan stays, and Kagoshima for sand bathing, shrine visits or mountain stays. Decide between a Kumamoto Castle day trip and an overnight Kumamoto stay adding the garden, then replace a Kagoshima sightseeing day or night.
Direct Kyushu Shinkansen services stop at both Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo stations. From Torichosuji, Sakuramachi or Tenmonkan accommodation, first travel to the relevant JR station. After the Shinkansen, connect again by tram, bus or ferry to attractions. These trains do not run directly to Aso Station, Kurokawa, Ibusuki Station or Kirishima Jingu. Look up both trains for the same travel date on a day return.
Northern Kyushu Pass Shinkansen coverage is Hakata–Kumamoto. Compare Southern or All Kyushu coverage for Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo. Do not treat JR passes as covering city trams and buses, Aso Sanko buses, reserved Kurokawa buses, Sakurajima ferries and island buses, sand bathing or car hire. Look up ordinary fares and limited-express charges for actual dates, trains and seats, then compare pass prices, eligibility and consecutive validity. Whether a pass is cheaper depends on other JR segments within the same validity as well as the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo return fare.
Assess a day trip only after securing both same-date trains, station access, local travel, admission, sightseeing and return. For an overnight accommodation move, check next-day return or onward trains and coordinate property access and dinner time. Choose your post-sightseeing train and local journey to the station first. Check JR restoration and service-change notices. The eight basic itineraries and displayed subtotals exclude this intercity Shinkansen and additional accommodation.

Regions and routes to explore on separate days
City gardens and viewpoints, ferry trips to Sakurajima and JR travel to Ibusuki use different transport. Choosing one direction each day makes it easier to plan the return to your base or move to the next accommodation.

Choosing kurobuta pork in Tenmonkan
Choose Kagoshima kurobuta dishes by the menu you want, such as shabu-shabu or tonkatsu. For a Tenmonkan meal after sightseeing, also check transport back to your accommodation. Menus, prices and hours vary; check restaurant guidance for each venue.
How should you divide passes and travel costs?
Compare the Southern and All Kyushu Passes for Chuo–Ibusuki JR and Kumamoto–Chuo Kyushu Shinkansen journeys. The Northern Kyushu Pass excludes this Shinkansen segment south of Kumamoto. City View, trams, ferries, Island View, car hire and sand bathing are separate. For an Ibusuki local-train return alone, compare ordinary tickets at JPY 2,340 with the Southern three-day pass price. You can buy ordinary tickets only for journeys needed. Check eligibility and reserved-seat conditions through official guidance and compare other JR journeys.
