Where should you stay and what should you see in Kumamoto?
Compare Torichosuji and Sakuramachi accommodation for the castle and city exhibitions. For JR trips to Aso, consider Kumamoto Station. Give the grassland day trip its own day. When staying in Aso or Kurokawa, choose your city return day and final departure first.
Castle, garden and exhibitions, or grassland and onsen?
Choose Kumamoto Castle for the keep and restoration work, or Suizenji Jōjuen for walks past a small Mount Fuji model and pondside scenery. See local history and nature at the city museum, or artworks in ceiling lighting and bookshelves at the contemporary art museum's Home Gallery. For more grassland or onsen time, plan separate outings to Aso or Kurokawa.
Itineraries by trip length
Choose city days for the castle, garden and exhibitions, an Aso return trip by JR and bus, or a Kurokawa stay reached by reserved bus. Aso JR, city trams and local buses are separate transport services.
2 days / 1 night
Give the castle and garden a day each, or choose the museum and art museum. For Monday or Tuesday visits, compare both exhibition facilities' closure dates first.
3 days / 2 nights
Give the castle, museum and garden a day each, or spend the middle day on Aso's grassland. Change from JR to a Kusasenri bus at Aso and return the same day.
4 days / 3 nights
Compare three city nights with an Aso day trip against one Kurokawa night between city stays. For Fukuoka or Kagoshima connections, check conditions for replacing an existing sightseeing day.
5 days / 4 nights
Spend two nights in Aso for grassland time or two in Kurokawa for bathing. Choose the bus on your city return day alongside your final departure.
Where should you stay?
Around Kumamoto Station
Consider Kumamoto Station if arriving by JR or travelling to Aso. The castle and central shopping streets require a tram and walking, so compare this with a city sightseeing base. Check the walk from the station to your accommodation before booking.

What should you add to the displayed subtotal?
Each cost card includes the stated admission, buses and tram rides for one adult. Trams are calculated at JPY 200 per ride without pass or payment discounts. Return JR travel to Aso is essential and paid, so look up your date, train and seat fare and add it to the confirmed subtotal. Accommodation, meals, flights, travel to the starting point, paid accommodation access and luggage storage cost extra.
The Aso return bus fare and bus day pass each cost JPY 2,000; choose one, not both. One adult bathing pass costs JPY 1,500 for three facilities, is valid for six months from purchase and cannot be shared. Across two days, check remaining uses and each facility's same-day reception.

How should you separate city trams and JR passes?
City trams cost JPY 200 per ride for junior high school students and older and JPY 100 for primary school students, effective 1 June 2025. Line A links Kumamoto Station/Tasakibashi with Kengunmachi. Line B does not go directly to Kumamoto Station, so check the destination at Karashimacho.
Kumamoto–Aso JR is covered by Northern, Southern and All Kyushu passes. Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen is covered by Northern and All Kyushu, but excluded from Southern Kyushu. Northern Kyushu adult prices are JPY 15,000 for three consecutive days or JPY 17,000 for five; All Kyushu is JPY 22,000 for three, JPY 24,000 for five or JPY 26,000 for seven. Official online purchase prices may differ. Northern Kyushu Shinkansen coverage is Hakata–Kumamoto. Trams, Aso Sanko buses, Kurokawa Kyushu Odan buses, admission and bathing passes are excluded.
An Aso day return alone does not establish that a Northern Kyushu pass is cheaper. With other JR journeys, such as Fukuoka, compare ordinary fares for the actual dates, trains and seats. The two-night Aso stay travels out on day three and back on day five, so both JR journeys need to fit consecutive validity. Confirm foreign-passport and Temporary Visitor eligibility and seat reservations with the official guide. A pass does not guarantee bus seats or JR–bus connections.

Which services should you connect for an Aso return trip?
Take the JR Hohi Main Line from Kumamoto to Aso, then change to the mountain bus outside the station. Check whether local trains need a Higo-Ozu change and compare direct limited expresses. Open JR's official search and Sanko's outward and return timetable together to plan grassland time and your return to Kumamoto. Look up limited-express and seat fares for your actual date and add them to the confirmed subtotal.
Take an Aso Sanjo Terminal-bound bus from Aso-Ekimae and get off at Kusasenri Aso Volcano Museum. Return from the same named stop's Aso-Ekimae-bound boarding point. Boarding is unreserved, first-come within seating capacity, without guaranteed connections. Leave room to take a later service rather than relying solely on the last bus.
Adult Aso Station–Kusasenri bus fare is JPY 1,000 one way or JPY 2,000 return. The route's adult day pass is also JPY 2,000, so a simple return trip gives no extra discount. Crater shuttles, JR and museum admission cost extra. Sanko buses do not accept nationwide transport IC cards; check official payment methods. Crater visits require separate checks for restrictions and extra transport.

How should the Kurokawa bus connect with your ryokan arrival?
Take the Kyushu Odan Bus from Kumamoto-Ekimae stand 7 or Sakuramachi bus terminal stand 6 to Kurokawa Onsen. Return from the Kumamoto-bound boarding point to Sakuramachi or Kumamoto-Ekimae. Choose dated departures from the official outward and return timetable and reservation guide. Book from two months before travel until the previous day.
The adult fare from Kumamoto-Ekimae or Sakuramachi to Kurokawa is JPY 3,400 one way or JPY 6,800 return for the same section, excluding baths and accommodation. Check whether you can walk to the ryokan or need pickup, then match arrival and dinner. For a museum visit after returning to the city, choose an early bus leaving time for viewing before last admission at 16:30.

Which areas should you see while leaving time for meals?
Treat the castle, garden and exhibitions as city sightseeing, and Kusasenri and Kurokawa as outings needing travel time. For western Amakusa, plan transport and destinations separately from this itinerary.
For city dinner, compare restaurants near your accommodation around Torichosuji or Sakuramachi. Choose between Kumamoto ramen, basashi and other dishes, then check restaurant hours and prices. When staying in Aso or Kurokawa, first check whether dinner is included so you can plan travel time.
What can the cameras help you check?
Cameras offer a view of scenery. Check official operations rather than using footage alone to decide access, transport services, volcanic restrictions or facility opening.
Check the broadcaster's filming subject and footage time. Do not assume the image shows the castle entrance or grassland access path.
Would you like to compare Kumamoto and Kagoshima regions?
Kumamoto's Aso and Kurokawa, and Kagoshima's Ibusuki and Kirishima, offer different trips and transport. Compare Kumamoto's three- and four-night options for grassland or ryokan stays, or Kagoshima for sand bathing, shrines and mountain accommodation. These links compare bases and regions rather than adding both prefectures' full itineraries to the same dates.
Direct Kyushu Shinkansen services stop at both Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo. From Torichosuji, Sakuramachi or Tenmonkan accommodation, first reach the relevant JR station; after the Shinkansen, take local trams, buses or ferries to attractions. It does not run directly to Aso Station, Kurokawa, Ibusuki Station or Kirishima Jingu. Once dates are set, look up both directions for the same day in the official timetable.
Northern Kyushu Shinkansen coverage is Hakata–Kumamoto. For Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo, compare Southern and All Kyushu's designated coverage. Exclude city trams and buses, Aso Sanko buses, Kurokawa reserved buses, Sakurajima ferries and island buses, sand bathing and hire cars from JR pass calculations. Look up ordinary fares and limited-express supplements for actual dates, trains and seats, then compare pass prices, eligibility and consecutive validity. Compare ordinary return fares even for this section alone.
Assess a day return only after securing both trains for the same date, station access, local transport, admission, viewing time and the return journey. For an overnight move, check the next day's return or onward train, accommodation access, check-in and dinner times. Consider a Kagoshima night first for more sightseeing time. Check JR notices for changes before leaving. The eight basic itineraries and displayed subtotals exclude this intercity Shinkansen and extra accommodation.

Areas to explore on separate days and how to reach them
Explore the castle, exhibitions and garden by tram and on foot. Aso's grassland needs JR and a local bus; Kurokawa uses a reserved bus. Decide whether to keep a city base or move locally, then match both directions.
Around the castle and Torichosuji
Take an A-line tram towards Kengunmachi from Kumamoto Station to Kumamoto Castle/City Hall, then walk. Follow dated entrance guidance for the castle and plan dinner around your Torichosuji accommodation.

Choose a ramen meal and local dishes
Kumamoto ramen gains flavour from garlic oil or garlic chips. Basashi is thinly sliced horse meat; taipi-en uses glass noodles. Choose your city meal, then compare the restaurant location with Torichosuji or Sakuramachi accommodation. For dinner in Aso or Kurokawa, check accommodation meal inclusions and arrival deadlines first.
How should you separate tickets and travel costs?
Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen is covered by Northern and All Kyushu passes and excluded from Southern Kyushu. Kumamoto–Aso JR is covered by all three. Shinkansen travel south to Kagoshima-Chuo is within Southern and All Kyushu coverage, beyond Northern Kyushu. Trams, Aso buses, Kurokawa reserved buses, accommodation and bathing cost extra. You can buy ordinary tickets for only the sections needed. Confirm eligibility and reserved-seat conditions with the official guide and compare JR travel on other days.
