See the keep and restoration work, then have dinner in Torichosuji.

From Kumamoto-Ekimae, take an A-line tram towards Kengunmachi and get off at Kumamoto Castle/City Hall. Walk through Josaien to the southern admission entrance. Only the south entrance is available on weekdays; follow construction notices for northern access on weekends and public holidays.

After visiting the castle and keep, rest at Josaien and walk to Torichosuji for dinner. Stay around Torichosuji tonight. Wakuwakuza is outside the basic itinerary.

From September to June, the castle opens 09:00–17:00, with last admission 16:00 and keep admission until 16:30. In July–August, closing is 19:00, last admission 18:00 and keep admission until 18:30. Check official notices for event extensions on your date.
Day two
Walk around the pond, then return to Kumamoto Station.
- Torichosuji → Suizenji Garden
Take a Kengunmachi-bound tram from Torichosuji to Suizenji-Koen. Walk about five minutes to the main garden entrance. Walk around the pond after the 08:30 opening. A standard walk takes about 30–40 minutes; allow extra time for meals and rests.

From Suizenji-Koen, take an A-line tram towards Tasakibashi, get off at Kumamoto-Ekimae and depart.

The museum and city art gallery
Stay one night around Sakuramachi, giving the museum and city art gallery a day each. Walk to the museum on day one. Visit the art gallery after 10:00 on day two, then take a tram to the station.
Day one
Explore Kumamoto's nature and history through exhibitions.

Walk from your Sakuramachi accommodation via the bus terminal to the museum. The operator lists about 15 minutes from the terminal. Use the entrance north of the building, towards the former Hosokawa Gyobu residence. View the permanent nature and history displays during 09:00–17:00 opening, with last admission 16:30.

Return along the same walking route to Sakuramachi for a meal and check-in. The planetarium and special exhibitions are optional extras. For a tram alternative, use Sugitomo stop and a five-minute walk; from Kumamoto Station, change from line A to a Kamikumamoto-bound B-line tram at Karashimacho.
Day two
Walk from Sakuramachi to Torichosuji for free art spaces, then depart.

Walk from your Sakuramachi accommodation towards Torichosuji. BIPRES Kumanichi Hall is about a minute from the stop. Use the lift or escalator facing the tram street to reach the contemporary art museum on Level 3. After the 10:00 opening, explore the Home Gallery and available free areas. Events may involve extra fees or restrictions.

The museum usually closes Mondays, or the following day after a Monday public holiday. The art museum closes Tuesdays, or the next weekday after a Tuesday public holiday. Final-day art viewing starts after 10:00, so move it to an earlier day for an early departure.

Frequently asked questions
Can I visit the museum and art museum on Monday or Tuesday?
The city museum normally closes Mondays and the contemporary art museum Tuesdays. After public holidays, closures move to the following day or next weekday respectively, so check dated calendars. Day-two art viewing starts after 10:00 and needs subsequent station travel time. Visit on an earlier day for an early departure.
