Kumamoto Travel: Where to Stay and What to See
For the castle and city exhibits, compare hotels around Torichosuji and Sakuramachi. For JR round trips to Aso, also consider Kumamoto Station. Give a grassland day trip a separate day. For nights in Aso or Kurokawa, first choose your return day to the city and final departure.
Castle, Garden, and Exhibits—or Grassland and Onsen?
Visit Kumamoto Castle for the keep and restoration work, or walk through Suizenji Jojuen for its pondside miniature Mount Fuji and garden scenery. Explore Kumamoto's past and nature at the city museum, and ceiling-lighting and bookshelf artworks in the contemporary art museum's Home Gallery. For more time in the grassland or onsen, set aside separate days for Aso and Kurokawa.
Itineraries by Length of Stay
Choose separate city days for the castle, garden, and exhibits, a JR-and-bus day trip to Aso, or a reserved bus and overnight stay in Kurokawa. Aso JR trains, city trams, and local buses are separate transport services.
2 days, 1 night
Visit the castle and garden on separate days, or choose the city museum and art museum. For Monday or Tuesday visits, compare the two museums' closure days first.
3 days, 2 nights
Split the castle, museum, and garden across three days, or give the middle day to Aso's grassland. In Aso, transfer from JR to the Kusasenri bus and return the same day.
4 days, 3 nights
Compare three city nights with an Aso day trip against a night in Kurokawa between city stays. For a Fukuoka or Kagoshima connection, check the conditions for replacing an existing sightseeing day.
5 days, 4 nights
Spend two nights in Aso for the grassland or two in Kurokawa for onsen visits. Choose your bus back to the city alongside your final departure.
Where Should You Stay?
Around Kumamoto Station
The Kumamoto Station area is convenient if you arrive in Kumamoto by JR or plan to travel to Aso. The castle and central shopping streets require tram and walking connections, so compare this base with hotels closer to city sights. Check the walk from the station to your hotel before booking.

What Costs Should You Add to the Displayed Subtotal?
Each cost card includes the admission fees and bus/tram rides listed in the itinerary for one adult. Tram rides are calculated at ¥200 each without pass or payment discounts. The JR round trip to Aso is a required paid journey: look up the fare for your actual date, train, and seat, then add it to the verified subtotal. Accommodation, meals, flights, travel to the itinerary's starting point, paid hotel access, and luggage storage are extra.
The Aso bus round trip and day ticket each cost ¥2,000; choose one, rather than adding both. The bath pass costs ¥1,500 per adult, allows three visits, is valid for six months from purchase, and cannot be shared. When using it over two days, check your remaining visits and each facility's admission arrangements that day.

How Do City Trams and JR Passes Differ?
City tram fares are ¥200 per ride for junior high school students and older and ¥100 for elementary school students, effective June 1, 2025. Route A connects Kumamoto Station and Tasakibashi with Kengunmachi. Route B does not go directly to Kumamoto Station, so check the destination at Karashimacho.
JR travel between Kumamoto and Aso is covered by the Northern, Southern, and All Kyushu passes. The Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen section is covered by Northern and All Kyushu, but excluded from Southern Kyushu. Northern Kyushu adult prices are ¥15,000 for three consecutive days or ¥17,000 for five. All Kyushu costs ¥22,000 for three days, ¥24,000 for five, or ¥26,000 for seven; official online prices may differ. Northern Kyushu's Shinkansen coverage runs from Hakata to Kumamoto. City trams, Aso Sanko buses, Kurokawa's Kyushu Odan Bus, admission fees, and bath passes are excluded from JR passes.
An Aso day trip alone does not establish that the Northern Kyushu pass is cheaper. If you also have JR travel elsewhere, such as Fukuoka, compare ordinary ticket totals for your actual dates, trains, and seats. The two-night Aso itinerary travels out on day 3 and back on day 5, so choose a consecutive validity period covering both JR journeys. Confirm foreign-passport, Temporary Visitor, and reserved-seat conditions in the official guidance. A rail pass does not guarantee a bus seat or a JR-to-bus connection.

Which Services Should You Connect for an Aso Round Trip?
Take the JR Hohi Main Line from Kumamoto Station to Aso Station, then transfer to the Aso mountain bus outside the station. For local trains, check whether you need to change at Higo-Ozu, and compare direct limited expresses. Use the official JR search alongside the Sanko Bus round-trip timetable to plan time on the grassland and your return to Kumamoto. Look up JR charges for your date, limited express, and seat and add them to the verified subtotal.
Outside Aso Station, board toward Aso Sanjo Terminal and get off at Kusasenri Aso Kazan Hakubutsukan-mae. For the return, use the stop with the same name serving buses toward Aso Station. Seats are first come, first served up to capacity, without reservations; connections with other transport are not guaranteed. Leave room for a later service instead of relying only on the last bus.
The adult Aso Station–Kusasenri fare is ¥1,000 one way or ¥2,000 round trip. The route's adult day ticket also costs ¥2,000, so a simple round trip does not create an extra saving. The crater shuttle, JR trains, and museum cost extra. Sanko Bus does not accept nationwide transit IC cards; check the official payment guidance. A crater visit requires a separate check of restrictions and additional transport beyond the grassland visit.

How Should You Coordinate the Kurokawa Bus and Ryokan Arrival?
Take the Kyushu Odan Bus from stop 7 outside Kumamoto Station or bay 6 at Sakuramachi Bus Terminal to Kurokawa Onsen. Return from the boarding point for Kumamoto-bound services and get off at Sakuramachi or Kumamoto Station. Choose your dated departures from the official round-trip timetable and reservation guidance. Reservations run from two months before travel through the previous day.
The adult fare from Kumamoto Station or Sakuramachi to Kurokawa is ¥3,400 one way or ¥6,800 round trip on the same section. Bathing and accommodation are excluded. Check whether you can walk to the ryokan or need a shuttle, then coordinate arrival and dinner. To visit the city museum after returning, choose an early service that leaves time to visit before the 4:30 PM last admission.

Which Areas Can You Visit While Leaving Time for Meals?
Treat Kumamoto Castle, the garden, and exhibits as city sightseeing, and Kusasenri's grassland and Kurokawa Onsen as trips requiring more travel time. For Amakusa to the west, plan transport and attractions separately from this itinerary.
For dinner in the city, compare restaurants around Torichosuji and Sakuramachi near your hotel. Choose between dishes such as Kumamoto ramen and basashi, then check restaurant hours and prices. For nights in Aso or Kurokawa, confirming whether dinner is included at your lodging helps you set your travel schedule.
What Can You Learn From the Cameras?
Cameras provide a reference for scenery. Check official operational guidance for access, transport, volcanic restrictions, and facility openings rather than deciding from video alone.
Use the broadcaster's information page to check the filming subject and video timestamp. Do not assume the view shows the castle entrance or grassland access route.
Compare Kumamoto and Kagoshima as Alternative Destinations
Aso and Kurokawa in Kumamoto offer different trip purposes and transport arrangements from Ibusuki and Kirishima in Kagoshima. Compare Kumamoto's three- and four-night itineraries for grasslands or a ryokan stay, or Kagoshima for sand bathing, shrines, and mountain-area lodging. The links below help you choose destinations and hotel bases; they do not add both prefectures' full itineraries to the same dates.
Direct Kyushu Shinkansen services stop at both Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo stations. From hotels around Torichosuji, Sakuramachi, or Tenmonkan, first travel to the relevant JR station, then transfer after the Shinkansen to trams, buses, ferries, or other local transport for the sights. The Shinkansen does not run directly to Aso Station, Kurokawa, Ibusuki Station, or Kirishima Jingu. Once you choose a date, look up outbound and return services for that same day in the official timetable.
Northern Kyushu's Shinkansen coverage runs from Hakata to Kumamoto. For Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo, compare the designated Southern and All Kyushu sections. Do not count city trams and buses, Aso Sanko buses, Kurokawa's reserved bus, the Sakurajima ferry and island bus, sand bathing, or rental cars as JR-pass inclusions. Look up ordinary fares and limited-express charges for your actual date, train, and seat, then compare pass prices, eligibility, and consecutive validity. Even for travel only between these two cities, first compare the ordinary round-trip price.
Assess a day trip only after allowing for same-date return trains, station access, local travel, facility entry, sightseeing, and the return. For a one-night stay with a hotel change, check the next day's return or onward train, hotel access, check-in, and dinner times. For more sightseeing time, first consider a night in Kagoshima. Check official JR service updates before leaving. The eight basic itineraries and displayed subtotals exclude this intercity Shinkansen and extra accommodation.

Areas and Routes to Explore on Separate Days
Use trams and walking for the castle, exhibits, and garden; JR and a local bus for Aso's grassland; and a reserved bus for Kurokawa Onsen. Decide whether to keep your city hotel or move to local lodging, then coordinate return services.
Around the Castle and Torichosuji
From Kumamoto Station, take Route A toward Kengunmachi, get off at Kumamotojo-Shiyakusho-mae, and walk. Follow the castle's entrance guidance for your date. Plan dinner around your Torichosuji-area hotel.

Choose a Ramen Meal and Local Specialties
Kumamoto ramen gets extra flavor from garlic oil or garlic chips. Basashi is thinly sliced horse meat, while taipien uses glass noodles. Choose your city meal, then compare restaurant locations with hotels around Torichosuji and Sakuramachi. For dinner in Aso or Kurokawa, first check whether your lodging includes meals and when you must arrive.
How Should You Budget for Transport Passes and the Trip?
The Hakata–Kumamoto Kyushu Shinkansen section is covered by Northern and All Kyushu passes, but excluded from Southern Kyushu. JR travel between Kumamoto and Aso is covered by Northern, Southern, and All Kyushu. Continuing by Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo falls within Southern and All Kyushu coverage, beyond Northern Kyushu's range. Trams, Aso buses, Kurokawa's reserved bus, accommodation, and bathing cost extra. You can also buy ordinary tickets only for the sections you need. Check eligibility and reserved-seat conditions in the official guidance and compare JR trips on other days too.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit Aso and Kurokawa into the same day as city sightseeing?
Separate the Aso day trip and Kurokawa overnight stay onto different days. Aso requires a transfer from JR to the Kusasenri bus; Kurokawa needs a reserved bus and travel to the ryokan. For both in one day, first check sightseeing time in each area and return transport.
