Kumamoto in 4 Days: Keep One Hotel or Spend a Night at an Onsen?
To avoid hotel changes, spend three city nights and give separate days to the castle, garden, Aso, and museum. For a ryokan night, compare one city night, one Kurokawa night, and another city night. Include the museum after returning only if an early reserved bus and museum opening day line up.
Choose an itinerary for 4 days, 3 nights
Visit the Garden and Aso From One Hotel
Spend three nights in the same Torichosuji-area hotel, with separate days for the castle, garden, Aso, and museum. Keeping one hotel means a round trip to Kumamoto Station on your Aso day. Choose this plan if your final-day departure leaves time for the museum.

Compare Kagoshima's Sand Baths and Shrine Trips
If sand bathing or shrine visits appeal more than grasslands and an onsen ryokan, compare Kagoshima's 4-day options. Reallocate hotel nights between areas instead of adding both full itineraries to the same dates. Compare ordinary tickets with designated Southern and All Kyushu pass coverage for the Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo Shinkansen; Northern Kyushu excludes this section. Station access, trams, ferries, buses, rental cars after arrival, and changed accommodation costs are separate. Start with dated return trains and hotel access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reach Kurokawa Onsen without a car?
The Kyushu Odan Bus can be reserved from two months before travel through the previous day. The adult fare from Kumamoto Station or Sakuramachi to Kurokawa is ¥3,400 one way. Choose your outbound service from the official round-trip timetable for your date and reserve the return seat too. Coordinate your ryokan shuttle and next city connection separately.

Is a Northern Kyushu pass cheaper for an Aso trip?
An Aso trip alone does not make the Northern Kyushu pass cheaper. If you have other JR journeys, compare ordinary ticket totals for your actual dates with pass prices, coverage, and eligibility. Trams, Aso buses, Kurokawa's reserved bus, attraction admission, and bath passes cost extra.
