Where should I spend an extra day on a 4-day Fukuoka trip?

Spend another day in Fukuoka or take a day trip to Nagasaki, Yufuin, Beppu, or Kumamoto. Compare the three city itineraries with the side trips. You can travel with individual tickets without buying a Northern Kyushu Rail Pass.

4 days, 3 nights A

Four days in Fukuoka: separate days for the city and Momochi

This itinerary assumes international arrival, 3 nights near Hakata Station, and departure on day 4 in the afternoon or later. Visit Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu on one day, then Momochi on another. Skip first- or last-day sightseeing for a late arrival or morning departure. Morning and afternoon labels describe the order of visits, not a train timetable.

Day 1: international arrivals → Hakata accommodations → old town

  1. Airport international terminal → Hakata Station

Take the free shuttle from stop 5 outside the international terminal’s 1st-floor arrivals area to the south side of the domestic terminal. Use subway entrance 1A or 1B and take the Airport line two stops to Hakata. The roughly 10-minute shuttle ride excludes immigration, baggage collection, waiting, and walking.

  2. Hakata accommodations → Kushida Shrine

If you can store your bags at your accommodations near Hakata Station, walk around Kushida Shrine. Take the Nanakuma Line to Kushida Shrine Station and walk to the shrine. If you arrive late, finish the day with dinner near Hakata Station.

Check your accommodations’ check-in and bag-storage conditions, airport shuttle waits, and subway operations on the day. The Hakata Station camera shows nearby streets, not whether trains are running.

Day 2: Ohori Park → Ropponmatsu science museum → Tenjin

  1. Hakata Station → Ohori Park

Take the Airport line from Hakata to Ohori Park Station and walk to the park. You don’t have to complete the roughly 2 km lakeside loop. Choose a section that suits your companions’ walking pace.

  2. Ohori Park → Science museum in Ropponmatsu

Have lunch near Ohori, then travel to Ropponmatsu on foot or by bus, depending on the restaurant’s location. Fukuoka City Science Museum is near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station. Adult admission to the 5th-floor permanent exhibition is JPY 510. Check Tuesday closures and exceptions, plus fees for other exhibitions.

  3. Ropponmatsu Station → Tenjin or Hakata accommodations

From Ropponmatsu, take the Nanakuma Line toward Tenjin-minami or Hakata. If staying in Tenjin for dinner, distinguish Tenjin Station on the Airport line from Tenjin-minami on the Nanakuma Line. Check each yatai’s location, weather-related operation, and payment methods.

Day 3: Tenjin → Momochi Beach and Fukuoka Tower

  1. Hakata Station → Bus stop in Tenjin

Take the Airport line from your Hakata base to Tenjin, then find a Nishitetsu bus toward Momochi. Fukuoka City’s official itinerary gives about 15 minutes on the bus from Tenjin to Momochi, excluding waiting, reaching the stop, and traffic conditions. Use Nishitetsu’s route and fare search for your travel date to confirm the stop and bus.

  2. Fukuoka Tower South bus stop → Tower / Momochi Beach

If your chosen route serves Fukuoka Tower South, check the walking route from the stop to the tower. Adult observation-deck admission is JPY 1,000. Momochi Beach lies north of the tower; walk there after your visit. Adjust the order for last entry and beach weather. The tower closes June 28–29, 2027. On those dates, skip the observation deck and walk along the beach only if weather permits.

  3. Momochi → Tenjin / Hakata accommodations

Day 4: prepare for departure in Hakata → international terminal

  1. Hakata Station → Airport international terminal

Take the Airport line to Fukuoka Airport Station, then the free shuttle from domestic-terminal stop 1 to the international terminal. Add time to reach the station, wait for the shuttle, and complete security rather than relying on the subway ride alone.

Official airport boarding-stop mapStandard subway fares

For a morning flight, go straight to the airport. First allow time for the Airport line, travel and waiting for the free shuttle from domestic stop 1, and international check-in and security. Add a station-area meal or short old-town walk only if time remains.
