Start with the sights

Compare admission and hours for the places that interest you: Hakata’s old town, Ohori Park and the science museum, Momochi Beach and Fukuoka Tower, Marine World, or Dazaifu.

Itineraries for your length of stay

Your day looks different depending on whether you want city meals and walks, indoor attractions, the sea, or a side trip. Choose an itinerary for day-by-day directions. All assume a base near Hakata Station and travel through Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal.

2 days, 1 night

There is little sightseeing time between arrival and departure the next day. Day-2 sightseeing requires a flight late in the afternoon.

3 days, 2 nights

Focus day 2 on city walks, the aquarium, or the waterfront. Departure day stays close to the airport.

4 days, 3 nights

After exploring the city, spend a day at your choice of Momochi, Marine World, or Dazaifu.

5 days, 4 nights

Visit Ohori Park and the science museum on one day. On two other days, choose two among Marine World, Dazaifu, and Momochi.

Near Hakata Station: airport transfers and JR travel

Hakata Station is two subway stops from the airport station. It is also a convenient starting point for JR journeys to Uminonakamichi. Even hotels described as being near Hakata Station can have different walking times to the subway gates and JR platforms. Compare the hotel address with the station exit you’ll use before booking.

Near Tenjin: dining and shopping

Tenjin works well if you plan to spend time in restaurants and stores. Tenjin Station on the Airport line and Tenjin-minami Station on the Nanakuma Line have different names and platforms. Check which station is closest to your accommodations. If you’ll take JR trains from Hakata, allow time to get there in the morning.

Ohori and Ropponmatsu: parks and museums

Consider these areas if walks and exhibitions are your priority. For airport transfers or JR trains from Hakata on arrival and departure days, allow time to reach the station and make any transfers. Staying close to the park can mean a longer airport journey.

Areas to group into a day in Fukuoka

With Hakata or Tenjin as your base, consider these five city areas and a side trip to Dazaifu. Uminonakamichi and Dazaifu lie in different directions, so separate days allow a more relaxed pace.

Hakata Station and the old town

A meal near Hakata Station followed by Kushida Shrine fits some city sightseeing into a short stay. Take the Nanakuma Line from Hakata to Kushida Shrine Station, then walk to the shrine. For a late arrival or little time before departure, keep the plan to a meal near the station.

Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata

After shopping in Tenjin, use the official yatai map to find stalls open that evening. Nakasu and Tenjin are separate areas. Check the nearest station and last service for your return to your accommodations.

Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu

Ohori Park’s lakeside path is roughly 2 km long. You can walk just a section and rest on a bench instead of doing the full loop. For indoor exhibits, continue to Fukuoka City Science Museum in Ropponmatsu, near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line.

Momochi and Fukuoka Tower

Allow about half a day for a Momochi Beach walk and sea views from the tower. The roughly 15-minute Tenjin–Momochi bus ride in Fukuoka City’s tourism guide excludes waiting and walking from the stop. Adult tower admission is JPY 1,000; follow the official last-entry information for your visit date.

Uminonakamichi and Marine World

For the aquarium, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Hakata to Kashii, then transfer to the JR Kashii Line for Uminonakamichi. Marine World’s official map gives train rides of about 11 and 20 minutes, plus a roughly 5-minute walk from the station. Add transfer and waiting time at Kashii.

Outside Fukuoka City: Dazaifu

Visit Dazaifu for large trees on the shrine grounds and shops along the approach. It is outside Fukuoka City; travel via Hakata → Tenjin → Nishitetsu train → Dazaifu Station. The 4-day/3-night and 5-day/4-night itineraries give it a separate day for the round trip and worship. Look up train times and fares for your date.

What foods should I look for in Fukuoka?

For meals in Hakata or Tenjin, choose the type of food first, then look for restaurants in the neighborhood you’ll be visiting. Menus and prices vary by restaurant.

Ramen and udon

Tonkotsu ramen combines thin noodles with a rich broth made from pork bones. If ramen does not appeal, udon is another option. You can find restaurants in both Hakata and Tenjin; compare menus and hours in the neighborhood you’re visiting that day.

Motsunabe and mizutaki

Motsunabe is a hot pot with beef offal, cabbage, and garlic chives. Mizutaki simmers chicken and vegetables in chicken broth. If offal’s aroma is unfamiliar, consider mizutaki first. Broths and minimum party or ordering requirements vary, so check the menu before booking.

Yatai food stalls

Look for yatai in the evening in areas including Tenjin and Nakasu, but not every stall opens on the same days. The official guide says most open between 18:30 and 19:00, and some close in bad weather. Seating is tight, so leave large suitcases at your accommodations. Many take cash only; check menu prices and payment methods before ordering.

Plan around your length of stay

For 2 days and 1 night

Choose meals in Hakata and Tenjin, Ohori Park and the science museum, or Momochi and the tower. For a morning departure, skip day-2 sightseeing and focus on reaching the airport’s international terminal from Hakata.

Plan 4-day and 5-day stays day by day

The 4-day/3-night and 5-day/4-night groups each have three itinerary choices. After city walks, give a separate day to the places you choose among Momochi, Marine World, and Dazaifu. Change the order to suit flight times and attraction closures.

Season and travel companions

In rain, choose an indoor attraction that is open instead of an outdoor walk, checking closed days first. With children, visit the aquarium and science museum on separate days. With parents, walking distances and stairs between stations and attractions may matter more. Seasonal events and cherry blossom dates require official date-specific notices.

View Fukuoka’s street cameras before your trip

Cameras show only the street sections in their frame. They do not establish attraction opening status, train operations, or congestion across the city.

In front of Hakata Station

On the day you travel from the airport to your Hakata accommodations, you can view the street in front of the station. The camera does not show your accommodations or the platforms inside.

Tenjin and Watanabe-dori

If spending the evening in Tenjin, the Watanabe-dori view gives a glimpse of the area. It does not show whether the underground shopping mall or yatai stalls are open.

Can I take the subway from Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal to Hakata?

Yes, but the subway does not leave directly from the international terminal. Take the free shuttle from stop 5 outside arrivals to the south side of the domestic terminal, then transfer to the Airport line. Hakata is two subway stops away. Allow separate time for immigration, baggage collection, and waiting for the shuttle.
