Itineraries for the length of your stay

Your day will look different depending on whether you want food and city walks, indoor attractions, the coast or a day trip. Open a route for the day-by-day travel order. All plans assume a base near Hakata Station and flights through Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal.

1 night, 2 days

There is limited sightseeing time between arrival on day 1 and departure on day 2. To explore on the second day, your flight needs to leave late in the afternoon.

2 nights, 3 days

Focus day 2 on a city walk, the aquarium or the coast. The departure day stays close to the airport rather than taking you further afield.

3 nights, 4 days

After exploring the city, you can spend a day in Momochi, at Marine World or in Dazaifu.

4 nights, 5 days

Visit Ohori Park and the Science Museum on one day, then choose two of Marine World, Dazaifu and Momochi for two other days.

Choose where to stay

Near Hakata Station: convenient for the airport and JR trains

Hakata is two subway stops from the airport station. It is also a useful starting point for JR journeys to Uminonakamichi. A hotel described as being near Hakata Station may still be a different walking distance from the subway gates and JR platforms. Check its address and the station exit you’ll use before booking.

Tenjin: a base for dining and shopping

Consider Tenjin if restaurants and shops are a big part of your trip. Tenjin Station on the Airport Line and Tenjin-minami Station on the Nanakuma Line are separate stations with separate platforms. Check which one is closer to your hotel. Allow time to reach Hakata in the morning if you’re taking a JR train.

Ohori and Ropponmatsu: parks and museums

These areas suit a stay focused on walks and exhibitions. For airport journeys or JR departures from Hakata on your arrival and departure days, factor in the walk to the station and any transfers. Staying near a park can mean a longer airport journey.

Areas to explore together on a Fukuoka trip

If you are based in Hakata or Tenjin, consider these five city areas and Dazaifu outside the city. Uminonakamichi and Dazaifu lie in different directions, so separate days allow a more relaxed visit.

Hakata Station and the old town

A meal near Hakata Station followed by Kushida Shrine fits city sightseeing into a short stay. Take the Nanakuma Line from Hakata to Kushida Shrine Station and walk to the shrine. After a late arrival or before a flight with little time to spare, keep to a meal near the station.

Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata

If you want a yatai meal after shopping in Tenjin, use the official stall map to check which stalls are operating that day. Nakasu and Tenjin are different areas. Check the nearest station and last train for your return to the hotel.

Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu

Ohori Park’s pond circuit is about 2 km. You can walk part of it and rest on a bench without completing the loop. For indoor exhibitions, continue to Fukuoka City Science Museum in Ropponmatsu, near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line.

Momochi and Fukuoka Tower

Allow around half a day if you want both a beach walk and sea views from the tower. The city tourism guide’s roughly 15-minute bus ride from Tenjin to Momochi excludes waiting and walking from the stop. Adult observation deck admission is JPY 1,000; follow the official last-admission guidance for your visit date.

Uminonakamichi and Marine World

For the aquarium, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Hakata to Kashii, then change to the JR Kashii Line for Uminonakamichi. Marine World’s official map lists train rides of about 11 minutes and 20 minutes and a walk of about 5 minutes to the aquarium. Add time for the transfer at Kashii and train waiting.

Outside Fukuoka City: Dazaifu

Visit Dazaifu for shrine grounds with large trees and shops along the approach. It lies outside Fukuoka City. Travel via Hakata → Tenjin → Nishitetsu train → Dazaifu Station. The four- and five-day itineraries give it a separate day to allow time for the return journey and worship. Search train timings and fares for your travel date.

What food is Fukuoka known for?

For meals in Hakata or Tenjin, choose a dish first, then find a restaurant in the area you will be visiting that day. Menus and prices vary by restaurant.

Ramen and udon

Tonkotsu ramen combines thin noodles with a rich pork-bone broth. If ramen does not appeal, udon is another option. Both Hakata and Tenjin have restaurants to choose from; compare menus and opening hours in the neighbourhood where you will be that day.

Fukuoka City food guide

Motsunabe and mizutaki

Motsunabe is a hotpot with beef offal, cabbage and garlic chives. Mizutaki simmers chicken and vegetables in chicken broth. If the flavour of offal is unfamiliar, you may prefer to start with mizutaki. Broths and minimum orders vary by restaurant, so read the menu before booking.

Yatai food stalls

You can find evening stalls in areas such as Tenjin and Nakasu, but they do not all open on the same days. The official guide says most open between 18:30 and 19:00, and some close in bad weather. Seating is narrow, so leave large suitcases at your hotel. Many stalls accept only cash; check menu prices and payment options before ordering.

Planning the length of your Fukuoka stay

For one night and two days

Choose one route: meals in Hakata and Tenjin, Ohori Park and the Science Museum, or Momochi and the tower. For a morning flight home, skip sightseeing on day 2 and focus on reaching the international terminal from Hakata.

Day-by-day plans for four or five days

The four- and five-day plans each offer three routes. After city walks, give a separate day to your choice of Momochi, Marine World or Dazaifu. You can rearrange days around flight times and attraction closures.

Adjusting for the season and your companions

In rain, choose an indoor attraction that is open instead of an outdoor walk, checking closed days first. With children, you can visit the aquarium and Science Museum on separate days. When travelling with parents, you may want to pay closer attention to walks and stairs between stations and attractions. Do not rely on seasonal event or cherry blossom dates without a dated official announcement.

Fukuoka cameras before your trip

Cameras show only the parts of the street in view. They cannot establish attraction opening status, train services or crowding across the city.

Outside Hakata Station

On the day you travel from the airport to your Hakata hotel, you can view the street outside the station. This camera does not show your hotel location or the platforms inside the station.

Tenjin and Watanabe-dori

If you plan to spend the evening in Tenjin, the view around Watanabe-dori can be useful. It cannot tell you whether the underground shopping area or yatai stalls are open.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Hakata or Tenjin in Fukuoka?

Stay near Hakata Station for frequent airport trips or JR day trips. Consider Tenjin if dining and shopping are your priorities. Hotels in the same neighbourhood can be closer to different station exits, so check the address before booking.

Fukuoka City’s official area guides

Can I take the subway from Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal to Hakata?

Yes, but you cannot board the subway directly at the international terminal. Take the free shuttle from stop 5 outside arrivals to the south side of the domestic terminal, then change to the Airport Line. Hakata is two subway stops away. Allow separate time for immigration, baggage collection and waiting for the shuttle.
