Three days in Fukuoka for a first visit

This itinerary assumes arrival at Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal, two nights near Hakata Station and departure on the afternoon of day 3 or later. Adjust the order if you have an earlier flight or are staying in Tenjin. Morning and afternoon indicate the sequence of the day, not train departure times.

Day 1 · Airport → Hakata → old town

  1. Airport international terminal → Domestic terminal

Complete immigration on the international terminal’s 2nd floor, collect your bags on the 1st floor and pass through customs. Go to free shuttle stop 5 outside arrivals. Get off on the south side of the domestic terminal and use subway entrances 1A or 1B. The shuttle ride takes about 10 minutes; waiting and walking are extra.

  2. Airport station → Hotel in Hakata

Hakata is two stops away on the subway Airport Line. Leave your bags at the hotel. Ask ahead about luggage storage if you arrive before check-in, and use the hotel’s address to find the nearest Hakata Station exit.

  3. Hotel in Hakata → Old town or Tenjin

After a late arrival, dinner near Hakata Station keeps the evening manageable. With more time, choose either the area around Kushida Shrine or Tenjin. The Hakata Station camera shows the street outside the station; use station and operator information for train service updates.

Day 2 · Park walk and city exhibitions

  1. Hakata Station → Ohori Park

Take the subway Airport Line from Hakata to Ohori-koen Station and walk to the park. The path around the pond is about 2 km, so you can walk just part of it. If you also want to enter the Japanese garden, check its opening arrangements and separate admission fee.

  2. Ohori Park → Science Museum in Ropponmatsu

Have lunch around Ohori, then head to Ropponmatsu. Your bus stop or walking route depends on where you eat. The Science Museum is near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line. Adult admission to the standard exhibition on the 5th floor is JPY 510. Check Tuesday closures before setting off.

  3. Ropponmatsu Station → Tenjin or your Hakata hotel

After the museum, take the Nanakuma Line from Ropponmatsu towards Tenjin-minami or Hakata. For a yatai meal in Tenjin, leave large bags at your hotel and check the individual stall’s location and payment options.

If the museum is closed, spend longer in either Ohori Park or Momochi. When travelling with children, you could switch day 2 to the route that includes Marine World. If long walks are difficult, do not attempt the full pond circuit; also check the walks from your hotel to the station and from bus stops to attractions.

Day 3 · Finish your stay in Hakata before departure

  1. Hotel in Hakata → Meal or walk near the station

If time allows, eat near Hakata Station or take a short walk towards the old town. A trip to Momochi or Uminonakamichi may leave too little time to reach the airport. Marine World requires a JR transfer at Kashii, so it is better visited on another day.

  2. Hakata Station → Airport international terminal

Take the Airport Line from Hakata to Fukuoka Airport Station, then the free shuttle from domestic terminal stop 1 to the international terminal. Allow separate time to collect your bags, walk to the station, wait for the shuttle and complete airline check-in and security.

Official airport boarding-stop mapStandard subway fares

For a morning flight, go straight to the airport. A meal or short walk near the station is an option only if you still have enough time for the Airport Line, the ride and wait for the free shuttle from domestic stop 1, and international departure formalities before your airline’s check-in deadline.

A day at Marine World

Choose this route if you would rather spend time seeing marine life than moving between several city sights. Visit Marine World on day 2 and return to Hakata for the evening.

  1. Airport international terminal → Hakata Station

Take the free shuttle from international arrivals stop 5 to the south side of the domestic terminal. Use entrance 1A or 1B for the Airport Line and travel two stops to Hakata. Immigration and waiting for the shuttle are not part of the train journey time.

Admission costs for three days in Fukuoka

Admission depends on which of the three routes you choose. Adult entry is JPY 510 for the Science Museum, JPY 2,500 for Marine World and JPY 1,000 for Fukuoka Tower’s observation deck. These figures exclude transport, flights, accommodation and meals.

Will a subway one-day pass save money?

An adult subway one-day pass costs JPY 640. Standard fares range from JPY 210 to JPY 380. If every journey were in the shortest JPY 210 band, three rides would cost JPY 630, saving JPY 10 compared with the pass. Four rides would cost JPY 840, making the pass JPY 200 cheaper. Actual fares vary by journey, so compare after choosing your stations. The subway pass does not cover JR trains or buses.

Frequently asked questions

How much travel time should I allow for Marine World on a three-day Fukuoka trip?

The JR ride from Hakata to Kashii takes about 11 minutes, followed by about 20 minutes on the Kashii Line to Uminonakamichi and a walk of about 5 minutes to Marine World. These figures cover the train rides and walk from Uminonakamichi; transfers and waiting are excluded. For the aquarium itinerary, visit on day 2 and check your return train as well.

Can I use the subway one-day pass to reach Marine World?

No. This route takes JR from Hakata and changes at Kashii, so the subway one-day pass does not cover it. Budget separately for the JR return fare.

One-day passOfficial Marine World access map for 2026

What are the admission costs for the three-day Fukuoka routes?

For adults, the standard Science Museum exhibition on the 5th floor costs JPY 510, Marine World JPY 2,500 and Fukuoka Tower’s observation deck JPY 1,000. These routes do not visit all three, so count only the attractions in your chosen plan. Transport, accommodation and meals are excluded.
