Where should I spend day 2 of a 3-day Fukuoka trip?

Use day 2 for city sights and the science museum, or visit Marine World or Momochi Beach. All three itineraries stay close to the airport on the final day.

Three days in Fukuoka for a first visit

This itinerary assumes arrival at Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal, 2 nights near Hakata Station, and departure on day 3 in the afternoon or later. Adjust the order for an earlier flight or a Tenjin base. Morning and afternoon labels describe the sequence, not train departure times.

Day 1: airport → Hakata → old town

  1. Airport international terminal → Domestic terminal

Complete immigration on the international terminal’s 2nd floor, collect your bags on the 1st floor, and pass through customs. Go to free-shuttle stop 5 outside arrivals. Get off at the south side of the domestic terminal and go down through subway entrance 1A or 1B. The shuttle ride takes about 10 minutes; waiting and walking time are extra.

  2. Airport station → Hakata accommodations

Hakata Station is two stops away on the Airport subway line. Leave your bags at your accommodations; ask about storage in advance if you arrive before check-in. Use the hotel address to find the nearest Hakata Station exit.

    Official airport FAQStandard subway fares

  3. Hakata accommodations → Old town or Tenjin

If you arrive late, dinner near Hakata Station is the easier option. With more time, choose either the area around Kushida Shrine or Tenjin. The Hakata Station camera shows the street in front of the station; train operations require information from the station or operator.

Fukuoka City tourism: Kushida Shrine Station

Day 2: a park walk and city exhibits

  1. Hakata Station → Ohori Park

Take the Airport line from Hakata to Ohori Park Station and walk to the park. The lakeside path is roughly 2 km, so choose a shorter section if you prefer less walking. If adding the Japanese garden, check its opening arrangements and admission separately.

  2. Ohori Park → Science museum in Ropponmatsu

Have lunch near Ohori, then head to Ropponmatsu. Your bus stop or walking route depends on where you eat. The science museum is near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line. Adult admission to the 5th-floor permanent exhibition is JPY 510. Check Tuesday closures before setting out.

  3. Ropponmatsu Station → Tenjin or Hakata accommodations

After the museum, take the Nanakuma Line from Ropponmatsu toward Tenjin-minami or Hakata. If visiting a yatai in Tenjin, leave large bags at your accommodations and check the stall’s location and payment methods.

If the science museum is closed, spend more time at either Ohori Park or Momochi. With children, you could switch day 2 to an itinerary that includes Marine World. For less walking, skip the full park loop and check the distances from your accommodations to the station and from stops to attractions.

Day 3: finish in Hakata before departure

  1. Hakata accommodations → Meal or walk near the station

If time allows, eat near Hakata Station or take a short old-town walk. A trip to Momochi or Uminonakamichi may leave too little time to reach the airport. Marine World requires a JR transfer at Kashii, so another day is preferable.

  2. Hakata Station → Airport international terminal

Take the Airport line from Hakata to Fukuoka Airport Station, then the free shuttle from domestic-terminal stop 1 to the international terminal. Allow separate time to collect your bags, walk to the station, wait for the shuttle, and complete airline check-in and security.

Official airport boarding-stop mapStandard subway fares

For a morning departure, go straight to the airport. Only add a station-area meal or short walk if you can still allow enough time for the Airport line, travel and waiting for the free shuttle from domestic stop 1, and international departure procedures before your airline’s check-in deadline.

Spend a day at Marine World

This suits travelers who want time with marine life rather than several city stops. Visit Marine World on day 2 and return to Hakata in the evening.

  1. Airport international terminal → Hakata Station

Take the free shuttle from international-arrivals stop 5 to the south side of the domestic terminal. Use subway entrance 1A or 1B and ride the Airport line two stops to Hakata. Immigration and shuttle waiting time are separate from the train ride.

  2. Kashii Station → Uminonakamichi Station / Marine World

Transfer to the JR Kashii Line, get off at Uminonakamichi Station, and walk to Marine World. The official map’s roughly 11-minute and 20-minute train rides and 5-minute walk exclude transfers and waiting. Check opening and closing times and your return JR train. The aquarium closes January 18–21, 2027, and sea lion and dolphin shows are suspended January 12–April 9. If visiting for the shows, check the reopening notice first.

Costs not included: Subway, bus, JR, and Nishitetsu fares; accommodations, meals, flights, and shopping; optional paid visits such as the planetarium, special exhibitions, and museums. If you skip a facility, omit its admission fee.

Tower admission and buses: adult observation-deck admission is JPY 1,000. Bus and subway fares cost extra. The roughly 15-minute bus ride in Fukuoka City’s tourism guide excludes waiting at the stop and walking to the tower.

Admission and hours

Admission costs for a 3-day Fukuoka trip

Admission depends on which itinerary you choose. Adult entry is JPY 510 at the science museum, JPY 2,500 at Marine World, and JPY 1,000 at Fukuoka Tower’s observation deck. Transportation, flights, accommodations, and meals are extra.

Would a subway one-day pass cost less?

The subway one-day pass costs JPY 640 for adults; single fares are JPY 210–380 by journey. If every ride costs the shortest-distance fare of JPY 210, three singles total JPY 630—JPY 10 less than the pass. For four rides, singles total JPY 840, so the pass saves JPY 200. Actual fares vary by section: choose your stations before comparing. The pass does not cover JR trains or buses.
