Choose an itinerary for your stay

Your day will look different depending on whether you want city walks and food, indoor exhibits, the coast or a trip outside the city. Open a route for the day-by-day directions. All these itineraries assume accommodation near Hakata Station and use of Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal.

2 days / 1 night

There’s little sightseeing time between arrival on day 1 and departure on day 2. To explore on the second day, you need a late afternoon flight.

3 days / 2 nights

Focus day 2 on a city walk, the aquarium or the coast. Stay close to the airport on departure day.

4 days / 3 nights

After city sightseeing, spend a day in one of Momochi, Marine World or Dazaifu.

5 days / 4 nights

Combine Ohori Park and the science museum on one day, then use two other days for two choices from Marine World, Dazaifu and Momochi.

Hakata Station: airport journeys and JR trips

Hakata Station is two subway stops from the airport station. It’s also the starting point for the JR journey to Uminonakamichi. Even if a hotel is described as being near Hakata Station, the walk to the subway gates and JR platforms can differ. Check its address and the station exit you’ll use before booking.

Tenjin: eating out and shopping

Consider staying in Tenjin if restaurants and shopping are the focus of your trip. Tenjin Station on the Airport Line and Tenjin-minami Station on the Nanakuma Line are separate stations. Check which is closer to your accommodation. If you’re taking a JR train from Hakata, allow time to get there in the morning.

Ohori and Ropponmatsu: parks and museums

These areas can suit a trip focused on walks and exhibitions. If you’ll be travelling to the airport or taking JR trains from Hakata on arrival or departure days, factor in the journey from your accommodation to the station and any transfers. Being close to the park can mean a longer airport journey.

Areas to explore together in Fukuoka

From a Hakata or Tenjin base, consider the five city areas below and Dazaifu outside the city. Uminonakamichi and Dazaifu lie in different directions, so separate days leave more breathing room.

Hakata Station and the old town

A meal near Hakata followed by Kushida Shrine can fit sightseeing into a short stay. Take the Nanakuma Line from Hakata to Kushida Shrine Station, then walk. If you arrive late or have little time before your flight, just eat near the station.

Tenjin and Nakasu-Kawabata

After shopping in Tenjin, use the official yatai map to find a stall open that evening. Nakasu and Tenjin are different areas. Check the nearest station and last service for your return to your accommodation.

Ohori Park and Ropponmatsu

Ohori Park’s lake path is roughly 2km. You can walk part of it and rest on a bench rather than complete the circuit. To add indoor exhibits, head to Fukuoka City Science Museum in Ropponmatsu, near exit 3 of Ropponmatsu Station on the Nanakuma Line.

Momochi and Fukuoka Tower

Allow around half a day if you want a beach walk and coastal views from the tower. The city tourism guide’s roughly 15-minute bus ride from Tenjin excludes waiting and walking from the stop. Adult observation deck admission is JPY 1,000; follow the official last-entry information for your date.

Momochi accessAdmission and hours

Uminonakamichi and Marine World

Take the JR Kagoshima Main Line from Hakata to Kashii, change to the JR Kashii Line and get off at Uminonakamichi. Marine World’s official map lists roughly 11 minutes and 20 minutes on the trains and a 5-minute walk to the aquarium. Add time for the change at Kashii and waiting for trains.

Outside Fukuoka City: Dazaifu

Visit Dazaifu for shrine grounds with large trees and shops along the approach. Outside Fukuoka City, it’s reached via Hakata → Tenjin → Nishitetsu train → Dazaifu Station. The 4-day and 5-day itineraries set aside a day for the return journey and shrine visit. Look up train times and fares for your date.

What should I eat in Fukuoka?

If you’re eating in Hakata or Tenjin, choose a dish and find a restaurant in the area you’ll visit that day. Menus and prices vary by business.

Ramen and udon

Tonkotsu ramen combines a rich pork-bone broth with thin noodles. If ramen doesn’t appeal, consider udon. Both Hakata and Tenjin have restaurants, so compare menus and hours in the area you’re visiting.

Fukuoka City food guide

Motsunabe and mizutaki

Motsunabe is a hotpot of beef offal, cabbage and garlic chives. Mizutaki cooks chicken and vegetables in chicken stock. If you’re unfamiliar with the flavour of offal, consider chicken-based mizutaki first. Broths and ordering requirements per group vary, so read the menu before booking.

Yatai food stalls

Yatai operate in areas such as Tenjin and Nakasu in the evening, but not every stall opens on the same days. Official guidance says most open between 18:30 and 19:00, and some close in bad weather. Seating is tight, so leave large suitcases at your accommodation. Many accept cash only; check menu prices and payment methods before ordering.

Planning around the length of your stay

If you have two days

Choose Hakata and Tenjin food, Ohori Park and the science museum, or Momochi and the tower. With a morning flight home, skip day 2 sightseeing and focus on the journey from Hakata to the international terminal.

Four-day and five-day trips

There are three options each for four-day and five-day stays. After city walks, spend separate days on your chosen places from Momochi, Marine World and Dazaifu. Swap dates to fit flight times and attraction closures.

Weather and travelling companions

In rain, choose an open indoor attraction instead of an outdoor walk, checking closures first. With children, you can visit the aquarium and science museum on separate days. With parents, consider the walks and stairs between stations and facilities. Seasonal events and cherry blossom timing need official date-specific notices.

Street cameras before your Fukuoka trip

Each camera shows only the stretch of street in view. It cannot confirm facility opening, train operations or congestion across the whole city.

Outside Hakata Station

Before travelling from the airport to your accommodation in Hakata, you can view the street outside the station. The camera does not show your accommodation or the platforms inside the station.

Tenjin and Watanabe-dori

For an evening in Tenjin, the Watanabe-dori view gives a glimpse of the street. It cannot confirm whether Tenjin’s underground shops or yatai are open.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Hakata or Tenjin?

Choose the area around Hakata Station for frequent airport journeys or JR trips outside the city. Consider Tenjin for eating out and shopping. Check the hotel address before booking: the nearest station exit differs even within the same neighbourhood.

Official Fukuoka City area guide

Can I take the subway from Fukuoka Airport’s international terminal to Hakata?

Yes, but the subway does not depart directly from the international terminal. Take the free shuttle from stop 5 outside arrivals to the south side of the domestic terminal, then change to the Airport Line. Hakata is two subway stops away. Allow extra time for immigration, luggage collection and waiting for the shuttle.
