Shiga travel: which side of Lake Biwa should you stay on?
Stay near Ishiyama Station for Ishiyamadera, or near Kusatsu Station for buses to the Lake Biwa Museum. For Hikone Castle’s keep and garden, stay near Hikone Station and walk to the castle. Reach Hachimanbori by bus from Omihachiman Station.
What would you like to explore?
Choose Hikone Castle for its keep and garden, or Ishiyamadera for a temple walk and worship. Follow historic streets along Hachimanbori. For indoor exhibitions on a rainy day, take a bus from Kusatsu to the Lake Biwa Museum.
Itineraries by trip length
Compare one night in Hikone for the castle, garden and museum with one night in Kusatsu for the temple and Lake Biwa Museum. Two nights in Hikone add Hachimanbori’s canal and historic streets. Check each course’s visit order and return to accommodation.
1 night, 2 days
Stay in Hikone to give the castle/garden and museum a day each, or in Kusatsu to give the temple and Lake Biwa Museum a day each. Reduce visits for late arrivals or early departures.
2 nights, 3 days
Choose Hikone for the castle and canal, or Kusatsu for the temple and museum. Take a short final-day walk near your accommodation only if time remains before departure.
3 nights, 4 days
Make separate day trips from Kusatsu to the temple, museum and Hikone Castle, or stay in Hikone for separate castle, castle museum and canal days.
4 nights, 5 days
Visit four attractions on separate days from one Kusatsu base, or stay two nights in Hikone before moving to Kusatsu for two nights. On the moving day, reach the museum early enough to visit before last admission.
Where to stay
Ishiyama Station
Otsu · 大津 (Shiga · 滋賀県)
Look near Ishiyama Station if Ishiyamadera is your main visit. Temple buses leave from stand 1. To also visit the Lake Biwa Museum, take JR to Kusatsu and change to a museum bus. The temple and museum buses start at different stations.

Kusatsu Station
Kusatsu · 草津
Choose Kusatsu to start with the Lake Biwa Museum or give southern temple visits and eastern castles and canals separate days. Museum buses leave from west-exit stand 2. Other visits require JR journeys to different stations. Check your accommodation address for walking time to the actual bus stand.

Omihachiman Station
Omihachiman · 近江八幡
Distinguish accommodation near the station from properties near the Hachimanbori canal. Canal buses leave from north-side stands 6 and 7. For Hikone Castle too, check JR return trains between Omihachiman and Hikone along with your return canal bus.

Hikone Station
Hikone · 彦根
Look near Hikone Station for the castle, Genkyuen and castle museum. The official walk from the station to the castle and museum takes about 15 minutes. Ticket queues, slopes and stone steps towards the keep take extra time. The castle and museum open at different times. A Hachimanbori day trip adds return JR and bus journeys.

Should I visit Hikone Castle and museum on the same day?
Adult castle/Genkyuen admission is JPY 1,000 and individual museum admission is JPY 700. For both on one day, check the JPY 1,500 combination ticket and exhibition operations. Separate-day courses use JPY 1,000 + JPY 700. Do not squeeze the keep, garden and museum into a tight departure schedule.
Hachimanbori walking and boats are separate choices
Take a Hachimanbori-stopping bus from Omihachiman’s north-side stand 6 or 7; adult return fares total JPY 520. Walk from the stop to the nearby canal. The basic course explores the canal and historic streets; boats are optional. Check the operator’s landing point, times and fares first if choosing one.

Give another city a day and return to the same accommodation
From Kusatsu to Hikone, use a Maibara-bound JR service. From Hikone to Hachimanbori, take a Kyoto-bound JR service to Omihachiman, then a canal bus. Return respectively on a Kyoto-bound service stopping at Kusatsu or a Maibara/Nagahama-bound service stopping at Hikone. Ordinary JR tickets are an option. When comparing the WEST QR Kansai Area ticket, first check coverage of your actual date’s sections and ordinary fares. Temple, canal and museum buses and admission are counted separately from JR. Its one- to four-consecutive-day validity cannot cover an entire five-day trip with one ticket.

Where should you walk after sightseeing?
Choose Hikone’s castle area, Hachimanbori’s historic streets or a park near Kusatsu Station. These are in different cities, so combine a walk with that day’s attraction rather than linking them all.
Yumekyobashi Castle Road below Hikone Castle
Yumekyobashi Castle Road · 夢京橋キャッスルロード lies near Kyobashi bridge over the castle moat. The listed station walk is about 20 minutes. Visit its sweet shops and restaurants for a meal after the castle, or take a short walk along the street before departure. Shops have individual hours and closures.
Hachimanbori and Shinmachi Street
Shinmachi Street · 新町通り
Historic Omi merchants’ houses and shops remain here. Use the official walking map to choose your route alongside Hachimanbori. Walking beside the canal differs from taking a boat. Check extra fees and hours for boats or museums.

Deai Hiroba near Kusatsu Station
Deai Hiroba (de愛ひろば) is in Area 5 of the park on the former Kusatsu River site, about six minutes on foot from the station. Consider a short walk before departure from your Kusatsu base. Distinguish park access from office hours, and check separate conditions for paid facilities or events.
Where should you go after leaving JR?
Use JR between cities and walk or take local buses from stations to attractions. Representative map pins help orient routes but do not identify ticket desks or entrances.
Hikone Station to the castle and museum
The station walk to Hikone Castle and its museum takes about 15 minutes. Check the official access guide for the route. This excludes ticket queues and stairs inside the keep. Check castle and museum opening times separately too.
Stations for temple and museum buses
Take a Sanmon-mae-stopping bus from JR Ishiyama stand 1 for roughly ten minutes to the temple. Museum buses leave from Kusatsu west-exit stand 2. Distinguish stations and boarding points first, then check return services for your date in each access guide.
Omihachiman Station to Hachimanbori
Take a Hachimanbori-stopping bus from Omihachiman north-exit stand 6 or 7. Return on a station-bound bus. For accommodation in Hikone, continue on a JR service towards Maibara or Nagahama stopping at Hikone. Allow time to change from bus to train.

Eat in the city you are sightseeing in
Look around the castle-town shopping street on the Hikone day, or Omihachiman restaurants on the canal day. Select the city in the Shiga restaurant guide. Choosing the same restaurant for Otsu worship and Hikone sightseeing adds intercity travel.

What should you eat in Shiga?
Consider Omi beef for a beef meal, or red konnyaku and funazushi for local dishes. Choose the food and city first, then check menus, prices and hours for each restaurant.
Omi beef
Omi beef · 近江牛 appears in dishes such as rice bowls and beef stew. For a meal in Hikone after the castle, compare menus in the Yumekyobashi Castle Road directory. Meals are excluded from listed facility and bus costs.

Red konnyaku
Red konnyaku · 赤こんにゃく is a local Omihachiman food. Its colour comes from iron oxide rather than chilli. It may be served with vinegar-miso or wasabi-soy accompaniments. Check preparation on the menu rather than assuming it is spicy from its colour.

Funazushi
Funazushi · ふなずし preserves Lake Biwa crucian carp through fermentation with rice. It differs from ordinary sushi with fish on rice. For fermented food, look for it on menus and ask about portions and serving methods if new to it. Not every restaurant serves it, so check menus before visiting.

Frequently asked questions
Do temple and museum buses leave from the same station?
Ishiyamadera buses leave from JR Ishiyama stand 1, while museum buses leave from Kusatsu west-exit stand 2. To visit both, take JR between Ishiyama and Kusatsu.
Can I visit Hikone Castle and Ishiyamadera on the same day?
The journey between them involves JR followed by a temple bus. Separate days leave more time for visiting. For two days, choose Hikone Castle and its museum, or give Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum a day each. Shorten visits for late arrivals and adjust order for museum closures. To combine them on one day, check return JR/bus times and both admission deadlines first.

Do these courses go all the way around Lake Biwa?
All eight choose among the temple, museum, castle and canal on the lake’s southern and eastern sides. They do not circle the northern and western shores. Choose attractions and a base before comparing trip lengths. The northern waterbird-centre camera is separate scenery information, outside the basic courses.
