Where should you stay around Lake Biwa in Shiga?
Choose the area around Ishiyama Station if Ishiyamadera Temple is your main visit, or Kusatsu Station for the bus to Lake Biwa Museum. Stay near Hikone Station to walk to Hikone Castle's keep and gardens. For Hachiman-bori, take a bus from Omihachiman Station.
What would you like to explore?
Choose Hikone Castle for its keep and garden, or Ishiyamadera for a walk and temple visit. Hachiman-bori offers canal-side historic streets. For indoor exhibits on a rainy day, take the bus from Kusatsu Station to Lake Biwa Museum.
Itineraries by trip length
Compare a one-night Hikone stay for the castle, garden, and castle museum with a one-night Kusatsu stay for Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. A two-night Hikone route adds Hachiman-bori's canal and historic streets. Check each route's visit order and return to your hotel.
2 days, 1 night
Stay in Hikone to visit the castle and garden one day and the castle museum the next, or stay in Kusatsu for a day each at Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. Reduce sightseeing if you arrive late or have an early departure train.
3 days, 2 nights
Stay in Hikone for the castle and Hachiman-bori, or stay in Kusatsu for Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum. On departure day, add a short walk near your hotel only if there is time before your train.
4 days, 3 nights
Take separate day trips from Kusatsu to Ishiyamadera, Lake Biwa Museum, and Hikone Castle, or stay in Hikone to visit the castle, castle museum, and Hachiman-bori on separate days.
5 days, 4 nights
Stay at the same Kusatsu hotel and visit one of the four attractions each day, or spend two nights in Hikone followed by two in Kusatsu. On the moving day, you need time to reach and visit the museum before its admission deadline.

Before traveling or booking
Temple and museum buses leave from different stations
Take the Ishiyamadera bus from Ishiyama Station and the Lake Biwa Museum bus from Kusatsu Station's west exit. Allow separate time for JR travel, waiting, and sightseeing as well as the bus ride, and check your actual transfers.
Will you visit the castle and museum on the same day?
Adult castle and Genkyuen Garden admission is ¥1,000; a separate castle museum ticket is ¥700. To visit both on the same day, check availability of the ¥1,500 combined ticket and the exhibition schedule. Routes visiting them on separate dates use ¥1,000 plus ¥700. Leave enough time for the keep, garden, and museum before your departure train.
A canal walk and a sightseeing boat are separate options
Use north-exit stop 6 or 7 at Omihachiman Station for a bus stopping at Hachiman-bori. Adult round-trip bus fare is ¥520. The canal is directly accessible on foot from the stop. The standard itinerary walks along the canal and historic streets; a boat ride is an optional extra. Check the operator's boarding point, schedule, and fare first.

Use a full day for another city, then return to the same hotel
For Hikone Castle from Kusatsu, take a Maibara-bound JR train. For Hachiman-bori from Hikone, take a Kyoto-bound JR train to Omihachiman and then the canal bus. Return on a Kyoto-bound train stopping at Kusatsu or a Maibara- or Nagahama-bound train stopping at Hikone, respectively. You can use ordinary JR tickets. When comparing the WEST QR Kansai Area Pass, first check coverage for the sections you will ride and the ordinary fares. Temple, canal, and museum buses and attraction admission are separate from JR costs in these itineraries. The pass covers one to four consecutive days, so one pass does not cover an entire four-night, five-day trip.

Where can you walk after sightseeing?
Choose the streets around Hikone Castle, Hachiman-bori's historic district, or a park near Kusatsu Station. They are in different cities, so pair a walk with that day's attraction.
Yume Kyobashi Castle Road below Hikone Castle
Yume Kyobashi Castle Road · 夢京橋キャッスルロード is a shopping street near Kyobashi Bridge over the castle moat, with confectionery shops and restaurants. Official guidance lists about a 20-minute walk from Hikone Station. Stop for a meal after the castle or take a short walk before departure. Each shop has its own hours and closing days.
Hachiman-bori and Shinmachi Street
Shinmachi Street · 新町通り
Former Omi merchant homes and shops line this street. Use the official walking map to choose a historic-street walk alongside your canal visit. Walking along the canal and taking a boat are separate options. If you add a boat ride or museum, check its hours and fees.

Deai Hiroba near Kusatsu Station
Deai Hiroba · de愛ひろば is in section 5 of Kusatsu River Heritage Park, about a six-minute walk from Kusatsu Station. Add a short stroll before your train on the final day of a Kusatsu stay. The office's hours differ from those of the park as a whole; check separate conditions for paid facilities or events.
Which way do you go after leaving JR?
Take JR between cities, then walk or use a local bus from the station to your attraction. Facility reference pins help with orientation; they do not mark ticket offices or entrances.
From Hikone Station to the castle and museum
The castle and castle museum are about a 15-minute walk from Hikone Station. Check the official access guide for the route. This time excludes ticket lines and climbing the keep's stairs. Check the castle's and museum's opening times separately.
Stations for the temple and museum buses
For Ishiyamadera, take a bus stopping at Sanmon-mae from JR Ishiyama Station's stop 1; the ride takes about 10 minutes. For Lake Biwa Museum, use stop 2 at Kusatsu Station's west exit. Distinguish the stations and stops, then check round-trip services for your date in each attraction's access guide.
From Omihachiman Station to Hachiman-bori
Take a bus stopping at Hachiman-bori from north-exit stop 6 or 7 at Omihachiman Station. Return on an Omihachiman Station-bound service. For a Hikone hotel, continue on a Maibara- or Nagahama-bound JR train that stops at Hikone. Allow time to transfer from bus to train.

Eat in the city you are visiting
On a castle day, look at the shops below Hikone Castle; on a canal day, look for restaurants in Omihachiman. Check the city when using the Shiga restaurant guide. Using the same restaurant for an Otsu temple day and a Hikone castle day adds intercity travel.

What should you eat in Shiga?
Consider Omi beef for a beef meal, or red konnyaku and funazushi for regional food. Choose the food and city first, then check menus, prices, and hours at each restaurant.
Omi beef
Omi beef · 近江牛 appears in dishes such as rice bowls and beef stew. For a meal in Hikone after visiting the castle, compare menus in the Yume Kyobashi Castle Road store directory. Meals are excluded from the facility and bus subtotals shown in the itineraries.

Red konnyaku
Red konnyaku · 赤こんにゃく is a well-known Omihachiman specialty. Its red color comes from iron oxide, rather than chili peppers. It may be served with vinegared miso or wasabi soy sauce. Check the menu for how it is prepared rather than assuming the color means it is spicy.
Funazushi
Funazushi · ふなずし is a preserved food made by fermenting Lake Biwa crucian carp with rice. It differs from ordinary sushi served as fish on rice. If you want to try fermented food, look for it on the menu and ask about portion sizes and how to eat it. Not every restaurant serves it, so check before visiting.
What do admission and buses cost?
These are facility and bus prices for one general adult visitor. Compare combined attraction costs in the itineraries by trip length. JR fares, pass purchases, lodging, meals, and flights are excluded from both these prices and the itinerary subtotals.
Hikone Castle and Genkyuen Garden
Adult admission is ¥1,000. A separate Hikone Castle Museum ticket is ¥700. For all three on the same day, check availability of the ¥1,500 combined ticket and the exhibition schedule.
General Ishiyamadera grounds admission
Adult admission is ¥600. The main hall's inner sanctuary, Hozoden, and other additional visits cost extra.
Lake Biwa Museum permanent exhibition
Adult admission is ¥840. Special exhibitions and the bus from the station cost extra.

Adult bus fare is ¥250 each way or ¥500 round trip. Temple admission and JR fares cost extra.
Kusatsu Station–Lake Biwa Museum bus
Adult bus fare is ¥480 each way or ¥960 round trip. Museum admission and JR fares cost extra.

Compare WEST QR by travel dates and sections
The Kansai Area Pass covers one to four consecutive days of nonreserved seats in ordinary cars on eligible JR local, rapid, and special rapid services. It does not cover the Shinkansen. Temple, canal, and museum buses and attraction admission cost extra. Conditions include a foreign government-issued passport, Temporary Visitor status, and an internet-connected smartphone. One pass cannot cover all five days, so compare its use dates with ordinary tickets for the remaining days. Check the official conditions for eligible station pairs and the coverage area.

Frequently asked questions
Do buses to Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum leave from the same station?
The Ishiyamadera bus leaves from stop 1 at JR Ishiyama Station. The Lake Biwa Museum bus leaves from stop 2 at Kusatsu Station's west exit. To visit both, travel between Ishiyama and Kusatsu by JR.
Can I visit Hikone Castle and Ishiyamadera on the same day?
Traveling between them involves a JR train and a transfer to the temple bus. Visiting on separate days leaves more time for sightseeing. For one night, choose the castle and castle museum, or visit Ishiyamadera and Lake Biwa Museum on separate days. Shorten day 1 if you arrive late, and change the visit order around museum closures. To visit both the castle and temple on one day, first check round-trip JR and bus times and both admission deadlines.

Do these routes go all the way around Lake Biwa?
All eight routes choose among Ishiyamadera, Lake Biwa Museum, Hikone Castle, and Hachiman-bori on the lake's southern and eastern sides. They do not circle the northern and western shores. Choose your attractions and lodging base before comparing trip lengths. The northern waterfowl and wetland center camera is a separate scenery resource, outside the standard itineraries.
