How to divide Tokushima city, Naruto and Iya

Stay near Tokushima Station for Awa Odori performances and city views from Mount Bizan. Give eastern Naruto a day for whirlpools, or compare a course staying in western Iya for vine bridges and valleys. Naruto courses use return buses; the Wakimachi/Iya courses below use a hire car.

Which interests you most: performances, the strait or valleys?

Choose Awa Odori Kaikan to watch and learn dance, or Bizan for city/river views from the mountain. Naruto offers strait whirlpools; western Iya/Oboke offer a vine bridge and gorge views by boat. Compare Wakimachi for a slower walk past old houses. City/Naruto journeys can use buses; the Wakimachi/Iya courses below require a hire car.

Courses by trip length

First choose whether to stay near Tokushima Station throughout, spend a night in Naruto or move to Iya. Naruto uses return buses; Wakimachi/Iya driving courses require a secured hire car. Western stays also need meal and car-return arrangements.

1 night, 2 days

A stays near the station for a performance and Bizan on separate days; B stays in Naruto first and sees the strait on day two. Choose city culture/views or the strait as your main focus.

2 nights, 3 days

A spends two nights in Tokushima with a Naruto return bus trip; B uses a hire car for Wakimachi’s old streets. Final-day Bizan is optional in B, so compare costs separately with a show-only visit.

3 nights, 4 days

A keeps the same city base and visits Naruto/Wakimachi on different days; B spends one night in Tokushima then two in Iya. B uses a car for the boat and bridge in the west, returning it in Tokushima on the final day.

4 nights, 5 days

A spends three eastern nights then one in Iya; B sees the west first and returns east. A’s final bridge visit precedes car return. B includes free Oboke Gorge views, excludes the boat, and chooses either a show or Bizan on the final day.

Where should you stay?

Near Tokushima Station

Stay near Tokushima Station to combine city performances with Naruto. It is convenient for Naruto buses and onward airport/intercity services. Awa Odori Kaikan requires a walk from the station.

Naruto

Stay in Naruto if the strait is your main focus. Accommodation near the station still needs a bus to Naruto Park, so compare its location with both bus services.

Oboke and Iya

Stay in Oboke/Iya for valley scenery and a rest at hot-spring accommodation. Ask whether dinner and station transfers are provided. If using buses from the city, plan around your transfer at Oboke Station and the last service to your accommodation.

Before choosing buses, vehicles and budgets

Check Naruto’s currents and return buses together

Choose return buses around your date’s tidal-current times for whirlpool viewing and Uzu-no-Michi last admission. Weekday and holiday timetables differ. On an onward travel day, allow time from the station to your accommodation and departure boarding point.

Adult return buses cost JPY 780 from Naruto Station or JPY 1,740 from Tokushima Station. Accommodation-to-station access and airport/onward-city travel are separate.

Drive to Wakimachi/Iya; compare buses for a bridge-only visit

Wakimachi courses 2-night B/3-night A and western-stay courses 3-night B/4-night A/B use hire cars. Check driving times using accommodation addresses and choose collection/return times. Hire, insurance, fuel, expressway tolls and parking are separate from facility subtotals; Yumebutai’s JPY 500 parking is per vehicle.

For Kazurabashi alone without a car, continue by bus or taxi from Oboke Station. Plan separately around both buses, JR connections and accommodation transfers. Courses 3-night B/4-night A return cars in Tokushima on the final day; move the bridge earlier or omit it for early departures.

Do not deduct Naruto/Iya bus fares because of a rail pass

JR Shikoku’s October 2026 revision notice lists All Shikoku Rail Pass train/tram coverage and excludes bus services. Do not assume Naruto Park or Oboke–Kazurabashi buses are included. Hire, performances, ropeway, bridge and boat fees are not discounted in these course subtotals either.

Trip-length course costs apply no pass purchase or discount. If you already hold a pass, compare its purchase/validity dates and your actual journeys with official guidance.

Compare city, strait and western-valley bases separately

Near Tokushima Station and below Bizan

Staying near Tokushima Station helps connect city performances and Naruto buses. Walk from the station to Awa Odori Kaikan. Performances are on floor two and the ropeway on floor five; allow separate time for each.

Distinguish station-based access from driving routes

Tokushima Station to the Naruto Strait

Facility guidance gives about 80 minutes by bus from Tokushima Station to Naruto Park, then a 5-minute walk to Uzu-no-Michi. Plan viewing around tidal-current times, then confirm the Tokushima-bound boarding position and return service.

Naruto Station to the park

From Naruto Station-area accommodation, choose the park segment separately: adults JPY 390 one way or JPY 780 return. This differs from the JPY 1,740 return journey starting at Tokushima Station. Check return services in the visiting date’s weekday/weekend timetable.

Tokushima to Wakimachi and Iya

Choose Tokushima ramen in the city

Tokushima ramen has brown broth with sweet/salty pork-bone soy sauce, yellow broth using chicken bones/vegetables, and a comparatively light white style. Pork and raw-egg toppings vary by restaurant too. Choose a style in the food guide, then check the pre-show restaurant’s opening days and last orders.

Dinner in Iya

Naruto buses and valley admission

Tokushima Station–Naruto Park adult return buses JPY 1,740 plus Uzu-no-Michi JPY 510 total JPY 2,250. In the west, calculate Kazurabashi JPY 550 and the boat JPY 1,800 separately. Distinguish strait, vine-bridge and old-street camera views

Check the destination and filmed subject first

The camera list above offers Iya Kazurabashi and the area in front of Wakimachi’s Yoshida residence. Iya Kazurabashi differs from Oku-Iya’s double bridges; a Koboke viewpoint camera differs from the Oboke boat. Use official tidal-current tables to choose whirlpool times rather than relying on strait footage alone.

Before departure, on-the-day checks and FAQs

Must I fit Naruto and Iya into two days and one night?

No. Naruto is the eastern strait; Iya is the western valley. For a short trip, focus on city performances/Bizan or Naruto. Treating Iya as a separate western overnight stay can reduce travel pressure.

Can I omit Naruto bus fares if I hold an All Shikoku Pass?

The October 2026 revision excludes bus services, so calculate Naruto buses separately even with a pass. Western hire-car costs are separate too. Course costs apply no pass discount.
